If one person in a sea of hundreds tosses a stone, clearly it is not worth going after that offender to put the health of hundreds of others at risk.

This should be obvious.

Once again, the gathering was in itself illegal........like it or not, and I don't.

Secondly, if someone starts throwing stones, you had bloody well best disperse, or you are shielding them.

I have no sympathy.

Which gathering was illegal?

Most of the gatherings are made illegal at the beginning but they are tolerated, else they would have to put massive people under arrest and it would be impossible due to the number of people in the streets.
They declare it illegal when the route is not given to the autorities in advance, which happens often.

The NY Times gives a severe opinion on Bill-78 and our government: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/24/opinion/our-not-so-friendly-northern-neighbor.html?_r=1

Funny how basic rights always come up while people are committing skulduggery and mayhem. Why do people who act like A$$holes have to have rights? When you deprive someone of the basic right of being able to do your daily routine safely, I don't want to hear any f**kin' snivelling. Gulag the bastards!

I dunno JLM. That's kinda like saying that because one douche spoils it for the rest of us, we should give them up.

NO, the only ones that I think should give up rights are those who act in such a way as to deprive others of theirs.

This new law isnt worded in that way. Its applying to everyone, not just the violent protestors.

Maclean's Quebec Cover Takes Aim At Student Protesters

h/t small dead animals:

Hashtag Of The Entitlement Generation

Well done

The cover of the June 4th edition of Maclean's magazine will add more fuel to the fiery debate around Quebec's student protests.

The magazine features a masked protester and the headline "Quebec's New Ruling Class."

"How a group of entitled students went to war and shut down a province. Over $325."

While tuition may have been the initial cause of the unrest in Quebec, many observers have noted that the protests have grown into a larger social movement. The Charest government has also been heavily criticized for the heavy-handed emergency bill that gives police more power to fine and arrest protesters.

"It amounts to a temporary suspension of certain liberties and allows the government to avoid serious negotiations with student leaders. And it grants the authorities carte blanche for the abuse of power; just hours after it passed, police officers in Montreal began to increase the use of force against protesters," a group of Quebec professors wrote in an editorial published in the New York Times.

This isn't the first time Maclean's raised the ire of Quebecers. A 2010 cover story "Quebec: The Most Corrupt Province" raised the ire of Quebec's political class and even earned the magazine criticism from many MPs in the House Of Commons. That issue featured Quebec's beloved Bonhomme mascot carrying a suitcase of money.

Well, THAT kind of sucks.

The government decided that the whole province should suffer because of these protests.

It's a reasonably appropriate thing to do...

...if you're completely bonkers.

Well, not quite completely bonkers! There's a method to their madness, when the entire population is pissed off with these a$$holes, then there is likely to be more citizens arrests made and they just don't have only the cops to worry about but the whole population at large. Of course that could back fire too and what you get is a MEGA riot.

Btw, I love the imagery that makes protesters look like Jihadi.

Nice touch MacLeans.

Nothing wrong with protesting but as one wise guy once said - "Stand up, speak up, shut up"- no mention of destroying property and lighting fires and beating on people.

Well with this new legislation in place, I'm sure the cops will be doing that soon enough.
