for anyone receiving public service — even a bus ride

Muslim women in Quebec who wear a burka or niqab could soon be required to uncover their faces to ride a city bus under a proposed provincial law.

The Couillard government's Bill 62 on religious neutrality could be put to a vote as early as Tuesday, two years after it was tabled.

The controversial legislation would effectively ban public workers — including doctors, nurses, teachers and daycare workers — as well as those receiving a service from the government, from wearing the niqab, burka or any other face covering.

Amendments introduced in August extended the proposed rules to services offered by municipalities, including public transit.

"As long as the service is being rendered, the face should be uncovered," Quebec Justice Minister Stéphanie Vallée said Monday in an interview with Daybreak host Mike Finnerty.

"This is a bill about le vivre ensemble [living together in harmony], it's a bill about guidelines and clearly establishes neutrality of the state."

The legislation, she said, is necessary for "communication reasons, identification reasons and security reasons."

Bio-metric surveillance of the general population is coming on fast. The burka will be outlawed everywhere, sooner or later. Head scarfs won't offer any issues to Big Brother.

Good on Quebec. No one should be allowed to hide their faces in our society. Now if the Feds need to bring in a law that bans the Black Block and their ilk from hiding their faces during protests.

Wonder if the rest of Canada will follow suite.

If it's about acquiring bio-metric data, as I suspect that it is, they will. Bio-metrics are already being used in places like the UK. With facial dimension data and/or body dimensions, they can identify anyone walking down the road being viewed with closed circuit video. This is for security reasons, obviously but there is no inherent limit to the applications of these techniques. You can be tracked all day, every day as you move from camera to camera.

p.s.Those airport body scanners would be a great way of accumulating bio-metric data on a large part of the population. Homeland Security may have a very different application of that data to, say, the Russian police (or maybe not).

the airport scanners don't detect how you walk / move though. Your walk is as distinct as your fingerprints, they say. Using a quantum computer and how someone walks they can pick out that same walk in seconds from video feed that would take a classical computer and human thousands and thousands of hours.

We are headed for a very secure world IF the current rate of extremism continues. In-Q-tel has their very own quantum computer as does Lockheed Martin, and Google with quantum computer services being paid for by many more. Should be even more interesting times ahead.

There's also a fair amount of research in the psychology of how you walk or your gate.

I wonder if they clued in to the fact that surgical masks are face coverings?

I foresee many pissed-off wearers of ski masks waiting for the bus in the dead of winter.

Even I cover my face on the colder winter days. You're a West-coaster aren't you.

Well if they are trying to take a bus while on the slopes, I can see that just might be a problem.

Actually, I am a BC Heartlander and wear a scarf on the lower part of my face often during the winter - there is no need to cover it once I am indoors or in my car as there wouldn't be for anyone else.
