SARDIS, Miss. — Eleven of 50 dogs being transported by an animal rescue group from Hattiesburg to Minnesota died when the van carrying them broke down on Interstate 55 in north Mississippi.
The van had left the Southern Pines Animal Shelter about 1:30 p.m. Friday before being forced to stop near Sardis, about four hours into the trip.
Two volunteer drivers discovered the dead dogs as they worked to unload them, the Clarion Ledger reported .
A statement from the shelter on its Facebook page Saturday said the vehicle was undergoing a thorough inspection to try to determine the cause of the deaths.
“Upon leaving the shelter all the dogs were alert and healthy, the van’s AC systems and ventilation seemed to be in working order, and throughout the trip the van remained cool,” the shelter said. “We are working to investigate what other system failures or mechanical malfunctions could have impacted the animals on board, and we are hoping to find some definitive answers as to what happened.”
Group Director Ginny Simms tells WREG-TV that they believe carbon monoxide poisoning from a mechanical malfunction — not the heat — may have been to blame for the accident.
Sims said the remaining animals remain under observation even though none are exhibiting signs of any heat-related issues.
“We are committed to helping save the lives of pets in need, and any life lost in our care is something we take very seriously,” the organization’s post on Facebook said.
“To say that we are grieving and devastated by the terrible accident that occurred yesterday would be an understatement.”
The shelter also thanked “all the compassionate passersby and to North Mississippi Animal Rescue for their help” in the aftermath of the accident.

ERWIN, Tenn. — A Tennessee man is charged with burying a 6-week-old kitten alive.
Local news reports say 29-year-old Johnny Mack Rogers faces a felony aggravated animal cruelty charge in a criminal complaint filed by Unicoi County Animal Shelter Director Kevin King.
It says King informed authorities a man and woman brought the kitten to the shelter on June 22 and showed photos of them rescuing the animal from a shallow grave in Erwin.
King said the woman told him another woman at Rogers’ home stepped on the kitten and Rogers buried the animal, adding that Rogers and that woman were drunk during the incident.
King said the kitten arrived covered in dirt and blood and gasping for air, and later died at an animal hospital.
It’s unclear if Rogers has an attorney.

Man accused of tossing dog off balcony

A Scarborough man accused of tossing his pet beagle to its death from a seventh-floor balcony allegedly told horrified onlookers: “I killed the dog. What are you going to do about it?”
Neighbour Patricia Grayson testified during a judge-alone trial that Adrian Foster made the comment. Foster, 26, who lived at 40 Fir Valley Crescent, south of the Warden subway station, has pleaded not guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to an animal in November 2016.
Court was told Grayson’s 29-year-old son, standing on the lawn where the dying black-and-white beagle, named Day, lay dying, shouted at Foster above on his balcony: “What’s wrong with you?”
Then, Foster allegedly confessed to the killing, court heard.
Shocked tenants gathered on the front lawn, screaming and upset by the terrible sight, the trial was told.
“I didn’t want to see anyone else traumatized,” testified building superintendent David Hack, who tried to move people away from the front. “It was quite a hectic situation. We had a crisis on our hands.
“I didn’t see anyone throw the dog off the balcony. People offered to assist the dog and then police and animal control officers arrived, as well,” said Hack.
After exchanging words with Grayson’s son, Foster disappeared back into his seventh-floor apartment. He returned to his balcony and hurled his dog’s bowl and food down to the lawn, Patricia Grayson told Superior Court Justice Julie Thorburn.
Grayson testifed that Foster told her hysterical son and other onlookers: “I killed the dog. What are you going to do about it?”
Grayson’s son is not being called as as a witness because he’s not available.
Hack said he’d seen Foster — who’d moved in shortly before this incident — walking his dog without a leash. Hack, who had seen Foster and Day together several times, warned Foster to leash his pet.
Police cruiser video showed Foster displaying bizarre behaviour, including arguing with himself while sitting alone in the backseat of a cruiser after he’d been charged that day, court heard.
The trial resumes Tuesday.

PHIPPSBURG, Maine — Police in Maine say they rescued two kittens from a pond, and they accused their owner of being inebriated and repeatedly tossing the animals into the water.
Phippsburg Police Chief John Skroski says Justine Lovig was charged with operating under the influence, cruelty to animals and violation of probation.
He tells the Bangor Daily News that an officer arrived to find her emerging from a pond with two soaked kittens Wednesday.
Her kittens were taken to Coastal Humane Society in Brunswick.
A phone number for Lovig could not be located and it’s unclear if she has an attorney. She’s scheduled to appear in West Bath District Court on Sept. 11.

Scales of justice. (Toronto Sun files)
A mentally-disturbed Scarborough man was found guilty Thursday of killing a pet dog by launching it from his seventh-floor balcony, given a suspended sentence and two years probation.
“This is a tragic event that resulted in the suffering and death of Adrian Foster’s dog,” said Justice Julie Thorburn, who found Foster guilty of both killing and causing suffering to his two-year-old beagle named Day at his Fir Valley Crt. home in November 2016.
“Mr. Foster has some mental health issues,” said Thorburn, giving him credit for nine months served in pre-trial detention.
“However, I have no evidence before me to find that Mr. Foster did not intend to throw the dog off the balcony and or didn’t understand the consequences of his actions.
“He never denied throwing the dog off the balcony. In fact, he told police that his ‘metaphysical self’ threw the dog off the balcony, an admission of guilt that was given after he had been cautioned.”
Thorburn disbelieved Foster’s testimony that he never hurled the dog. The defence position was that Foster’s pet either accidently fell or jumped from the balcony.
“It would have been highly unlikely if not impossible for this small dog to jump to the top of four empty crates without knocking them over, and or to jump from the ground or a stool over the three to four foot metal barrier,” said Thorburn.
Foster’s reaction to the discovery of his gravely-injured dog “was troubling and highly unusual,” noted Thorburn.
“He showed no sadness, only anger at those gathered below. Instead of rushing to help the dog, he threw a bag of dog food towards the seriously-injured dog. He made no attempt to help the dog,” said Thorburn.
Foster has been living on the streets or in homeless shelters since he was 14 years old, and has been involuntarily hospitalized for mental illness, court heard.
He has spent the last 18 months in jail.
Foster, 26, who has prior convictions for assault resisting arrest and escaping lawful custody, will remain in jail as he is facing two outstanding charges of assaulting jail-guards, including an allegation he head-butted and broke a jail-guard’s nose last Saturday.
Foster, who had been calm and collected as a witness, reacted angrily and loudly uttered profanities after Thorburn convicted him.
“If I wanted to assault someone, trust me, I’d know how to do it,” snapped Foster.

HIGHLANDS, N.J. — Authorities are trying to find the person who left a young pit bull to drown in a cage at water’s edge in a rising tide.
A person walking their dog in Veterans Memorial Park in Highlands, New Jersey, spotted the small dog cowering in the cage on a portion of sand between a bulkhead and the water as the tide came in on Monday morning. The person rescued the animal.
In a statement on Facebook, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office estimates the dog was placed between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., based on the tide schedule.
The grey and white pit bull was taken to the Highlands police station.

MAHONE BAY, N.S. — A cat in Nova Scotia is recovering from surgery after being shot in the head.
The SPCA says the cat — named Vox — found its way home on the province’s southern shore after it was “critically injured” earlier this week.
The cat underwent surgery to repair a broken upper and lower jaw and remove bone and bullet fragments.
A veterinarian says the bullet split into several pieces.
The SPCA says the cat faces weeks of being fed through a syringe.
The agency is seeking information about shootings in the area of Back Cornwall Rd. in New Cornwall, N.S., between Monday and Tuesday.
“This is heartbreaking that someone’s pet has to go through such a tragic incident,” the SPCA’s chief provincial inspector, Jo-Anne Landsburg, said in a statement Wednesday.
“This type of situation would be an offence under the Animal Protection Act of Nova Scotia and the Criminal Code of Canada. Any public assistance with information would be helpful.”

More than a three-hour tour: Castaway puppies rescued from Manitoba island

CROSS LAKE, Man. — Skipper is twice the size of Gilligan, and they’re are always chumming around.
The professor is the quiet one.
Ginger and Mary Ann might be the best looking.
And Thurston Howell III and Mrs. Howell are enjoying the luxuries of the mainland.
Seven puppies named after the characters on the “Gilligan’s Island” TV show are recovering in a foster home after they were rescued from a tiny island in northern Manitoba.
Debra Vandekerkhove with Norway House Animal Rescue said a man who lives near the shore in the remote community of Cross Lake was outside with a friend Sunday night when they heard some animals crying.
“They took their binoculars and they’re looking and they can see some small, dark movements. And they thought — oh, must be some wolves on one of the islands fighting,” Vandekerkhove said.
“The next morning, same thing. They heard it again.”
The men went to investigate and after a quick boat ride came across some bounding bundles of fur on a rocky spit.
“As they got closer, they realized there were seven abandoned, 3 1/2-month old puppies on the island starving to death,” said Vandekerkhove.
The black, Labrador retriever-mix pups were scrawny and scared and the men and another rescuer spent the next few days ferrying over food as well as a dog house until they gained the animals’ trust.
“The last thing you want to do is bring them in if they’re semi-feral and have them run away on you and they disappear,” Vandekerkhove said.
The puppies were put in kennels on boats Wednesday night and taken to the home of a centre volunteer in Cross Lake, where they are playing with toys and appear happy and healthy, she said.
It was the foster mother and one of the rescuers who came up with the idea to name the pups after the seven shipwrecked castaways on the classic sitcom from the 1960s, said Vandekerkhove. And it has worked out perfectly.
As the puppies began to show their personalities, the three females and four males were matched with the characters.
The puppies will soon be transferred to Winnipeg, Vandekerkhove said, where they will be put up for adoption.

SERIAL CAT KILLER: 7 feline deaths in Washington state linked, police believe

On Saturday night, Kathy Harrigan fed and brushed Harley, a deaf tabby cat who she had been taking care of for the past two years.
Leaving him in the heated outdoor cat house that she had built him, she went to bed. The next morning when she woke up, she told Q13 Fox News in Tacoma, Harley wasn’t waiting for her by the door as usual.
It didn’t take long before the police showed up with bad news. Harley had been found mutilated on a neighbor’s lawn, they told her – making the semi-feral 20-year-old tabby’s death the seventh in a string of killings in recent months that officials in Thurston County, Washington, believe is the work of a serial cat killer.
In each incident, Erika Johnson, an animal cruelty services investigator for the county, told Q13, the cat has been cut open with a scalpel and had its spine removed. Then its body has been prominently displayed in a public place for people to find.
In addition to Olympia, where Harley’s corpse was discovered, mutilated cats have been found in the nearby suburbs of Lacey and Tumwater.
In July, another cat was found cut in half in a public park in Port Angeles, 120 miles from Olympia.
Debbie Drake recognized it as her cat, Tarot.
“He was a friend to not only other cats but dogs as well,” she wrote on Facebook. “I like to think he was like the cat sheriff of the west side. He wondered his turf and hung with his posse.”
The cuts are too clean for the deaths to be accidental, Johnson told Q13. And, in one case, a surgical glove was found next to the cat’s body.
“This is not normal and it’s very sick behavior,” she said.
Less than 48 hours after Harley was found dead in Olympia, a cat named Olly turned up dead a mile away.
“Olly fought for her life, using her claws to try to get away,” Johnson said.
A forensic necropsy revealed that she had been strangled before being cut open and having her spine removed, Q13 reported. Investigators are working to see if any DNA samples can be retrieved from her claws and used to identify the person who killed her.
Residents fear that the suspected killer could be a danger to humans as well.
Patrick and Angie Swan’s cat Callie was found mutilated in early July after she went missing.
“I said, ‘what caused this? Did it get hit by a car?’ They said, ‘no.’ I said, ‘Did an animal like a raccoon or a coyote or anything?’ And they said ‘no.’ Then they said, ‘This was done by a human,” Patrick Swan said. “My fear is, if you’re going to do cats, what’s next?”
Residents are being warned to keep their pets indoors. A $3,000 reward for information about the suspected serial killer that leads to an arrest and conviction is being offered by Pasado’s Safe Haven, an anti-cruelty organization and animal sanctuary in the town of Sultan, and David Rose, an anchor from Q13 Fox News in Tacoma.
Jen tweeted “There’s a #catserial killer in Thurston County WA. I can’t stress enough how important it is to keep your #catsindoors! Please retweet & tell everyone in #ThurstonCounty& #WaState. Spread the word. Pray that this sicko is caught! #olympia#portangeles”

There have been several cases of cats being serially mutilated in other cities over the past several years. In 2016, a San Jose man pleaded guilty to 21 felony counts related to the torture and deaths of 20 cats. In January, a London man was arrested for allegedly beheading five cats and leaving their bodies in places for “their owners or members of the public to find,” according to the Independent.
The Post’s Karin Brulliard reported in 2016 how a handful of counties across the country have been registering animal abusers similar to the way sex offenders are registered. Their names, addresses and photos are published on a county-run websites that are searchable by the public.
In Washington state, the maximum jail sentence for a felony animal offense is five years, if it’s someone’s first offense, according to the Humane Society of the United States . They may be also ordered to pay a maximum fine of $10,000. In 2015, Gov. Jay Inslee, D-Wash., signed a bill that increased charges for those convicted of killing or stealing pets.

YORK, S.C. — Two South Carolina teenage boys are charged with trying to drown a kitten in a video posted to Snapchat.
York County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Trent Faris tells The Herald of Rock Hill that the 13-year-old and 15-year-old were charged as juveniles Thursday with felony animal cruelty. The Associated Press does not typically identify those charged as juveniles.
Faris says officials from animal rescue organization Kerry’s Cats saw the Snapchat video Tuesday and called deputies. The domestic short-haired orange tabby, called Layla, was taken to veterinarian Sonya McCathey. McCathey says Layla had head trauma and signs of attempted strangulation, but is recovering.
According to a sheriff’s incident report, the teens initially lied to deputies, but then acknowledged “just having fun” while torturing Layla.

Indiana animal shelter accused of freezing kittens to death

ROCKPORT, Ind. — Authorities in southern Indiana are investigating allegations that an animal shelter has been freezing kittens to death as an alternative to accepted forms of euthanasia.
Bridget Woodson told the Courier & Press that she quit working at the Spencer County Animal Shelter and spoke to authorities after the animal control officer twice asked her to put injured but alive kittens in a plastic bag and then into a freezer to kill them.
“I had to do something,” Woodson said. “I’m super concerned about the animals. If this is deemed as acceptable and no one is held accountable, what else will start to slip through the cracks?”
Woodson shared with the newspaper a screenshot of a text exchange she said was between her and the animal control officer. During that exchange, Woodson claimed the officer told her that “the freezer is no less humane” than euthanasia by a veterinarian.
The officer did not respond to messages requesting comment.
The “slow chilling or freezing of unanesthetized animals” is an unacceptable form of euthanasia, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals.
Shelter officials declined to comment to WFIE-TV. The shelter’s Facebook page has also been taken down.
“This is the only shelter resource in this town and for so many surrounding towns. I don’t want it closed,” Woodson said. “I just think the guidelines and policies absolutely need to change. The management and board absolutely needs to be changed.”
The Spencer County Sheriff’s Office turned the investigation over to the prosecutor’s office due to a potential conflict of interest. Chief Deputy Prosecutor Thomas Pulley declined to comment on the case.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says more than 600 birds were removed from a house in central Ohio after reports of animal neglect and a complaint from the public about living conditions.
The ASPCA says the birds were living in extremely overcrowded conditions in a home in a Columbus neighbourhood. ASPCA and Columbus Humane officials say birds removed from the home Tuesday under a search warrant include parakeets, cockatiels, finches, macaws and cockatoos.
Some birds had medical issues, including missing feathers and plucking mutilation.
The organizations say they are focusing on assessing the birds’ welfare and ensuring they receive appropriate care.
They say the birds have been relocated to a temporary shelter until a court determines custody.
The home’s owner wasn’t immediately identified.

LAURENS, S.C. — Authorities in South Carolina say a woman refused to feed her ex-boyfriend’s dog for at least a month.
Laurens County Sheriff’s Capt. Chris Martin tells news outlets Elizabeth Lena James said she intentionally didn’t feed or care for the dog left at her house. Martin says she later changed her story, saying the dog refused to eat provided food.
The 16-month-old mastiff mix was found tied to a tree, emaciated, malnourished and full of maggots and worms. Now called “Champ,” he’s being treated at a 24-hour veterinarian clinic in Columbia.
A rescue group says he should weigh more than 100 pounds (45 kilograms) at his age, but currently weighs only 50 pounds (23 kilograms).
James is charged with ill treatment of animals and is out on $15,000 bail. It’s unclear whether she has a lawyer.

MULGA, Ala. — More than a dozen dogs have been rescued from an apparent dog-fighting operation where Alabama authorities found 11 dog skulls.
Jefferson County Chief Deputy Randy Christian tells AL.com that deputies responding to a complaint Sunday morning were met by a juvenile carrying an injured dog and could hear what sounded like dogs fighting in the woods behind a home.
Christian says deputies found 17 pit bulls, four of whom had injuries that were indicative of dog-fighting. In addition to recovering at least 11 dog skulls, investigators found a ring with fresh blood inside.
A 42-year-old man who wasn’t immediately identified was taken into custody pending formal charges.
Animal control has taken custody of the dogs.

A pile of dog bones was found at an Alabama dog fighting ring????????????

Gosh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am glad LIE-berals have DELIBERATELY starved our police forces so badly that it takes so many years to shut down such vile activities!!!!!!!!!!!!

But we all know it is far more important for LIE-berals to buy votes than it is to worry about criminal behaviour!!!!!!!!!

And it now costs $150 grand per year to keep a Cdn criminal in jail for a year!!!!!!!!!!!

LIE-berals bitterly resent being forced to waste so much money on criminals- when there are so many Hogs at the govt trough out there in need of MORE GRAVY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LIE-berals are such careful money managers that the Hogs whose votes they are trying to buy are now paying an average of two grand more per year in taxes!!!!!!!!

Freed 45 years early, a notorious serial rapist went right back to the village he terrorized for years.
Dimitris Aspiotis, 47, known as The Beast of Kavos, was handed a 52-year sentence for the rape of Kayleigh Morgan and was allowed to return to the village he committed the crime, a party island called Corfu located in Greece, the Daily Mail reports.
Aspiotis served less than nine years in prison before being freed, despite being convicted of the horrific rape of Morgan in 2012.
Morgan was working as a holiday representative in 2010 when Aspiotis forced her into the woods and raped her five times at knifepoint. The drug-fuelled attack lasted 14-hours.
The serial rapist has a girlfriend now and says he won’t rape again, telling the Sunday Express he isn’t allowed to leave Corfu but can see his girlfriend on Paxos.
Other than that, Aspiotis is free to roam around Corfu with tourists unaware of his predatory past.
Aspiotis is permitted to drink in bars but was recently confronted by a This Morning camera crew who asked about the estimated 100 women he has raped over the years.
The Beast of Kavos covered his face and tried to escape the reporter’s questions, refusing to answer while making his way to the back of the bar before shutting a door blocking the reporter from following him.
Fear of retribution and costly repairs is apparently stopping bar owers and other locals from taking action against Aspiotis.
Morgan told This Morning, if local business owners care about tourism they should shut their doors to the sex offender.
“How can they be bothered about tourism when a rapist is on the loose,” she said.

When she reported the rape, a mugshot of Aspiotis was taken and local police said: “It wasn’t him was it?”
Morgan said the local community already knew about Aspiotis — his nickname was Jimmy the Rapist — and said: “It makes me feel sick that they knew he was out there.”
The rampant rapist was so infamous in the village that when Morgan was taken, she says a bar owner called Aspiotis to say they knew he had taken her.
Aspiotis was also found guilty of three of rapes — all British women — over the course of 46 days and is thought to have raped many more women.
Morgan was never told of his release. Aspiotis’ attack left her scarred with damage to her vision and face.
