All mammals on earth have similar bone structures (whales have 'finger bones' in their flippers for example), implying we all evolved from one common ancestor. Monkeys and apes evolved side by side to the best of my knowledge, not one from the other. If we'd evolved from monkeys, monkeys wouldn't still be here, right?

We didn't evolve from apes, we are apes. I think.

"Monkeys and apes evolved side by side to the best of my knowledge, not one from the other. If we'd evolved from monkeys, monkeys wouldn't still be here, right?"

So you think I mean we evolved from monkeys?

We are apes. We didn't evolve from apes. This is what I think.

It sounded like you were correcting me as per us being apes.... I was pointing out that I had classified us as apes.

I love the way this discussion is going.... so many ideas floating around worth thinking on .... the neat thing about forums is to feel you can post something even if it may be off the wall to some of the readers - you are pretty much certain of getting feedback good and bad.... which is better than nothing at all....

About the monkeys and tail-less simians of all sizes..... perhaps environment had a part in the development of the human body.

We needed speed to survive - and a tail (on grassland and flat plain) would have been a speed impediment yes?

Or perhaps as we straighened up our stance on the two feet/two leg mobile style the tail was simply regarded as insignificant and useless to our lifestyle and shriveled up.

Has anyone noticed that many 100% African descendents living in other nations for generations have changed their features? I am not discussing intermarriage here... I am talking about the African facial features become less predominant and more blending with caucasian or european.... this holds true with asian features.

This isn't an original thought of mine....it is discussed quite often among some of my friends who find it an interesting phenom...

Which brings me to wonder if environment and proximity to sunshine has something to do with our features.

Me? I'm still working on the appendix.... useless bit of trouble... unless you eat raw I guess...

ok so like i dunno if apes evolved from monkeys....apes are considered a higher specis, if thats politically correct to say..They are social and we study them and sometimes view them like we view are own habits..apes don't have tails ...thats where this started with me...if they did come from a monkey then it's safe to say apes are evovled from monkeys.....

We've never been able to find the jump off point.

Amhpibians came from the water.....reptiles came after amhpibians, dinasours after reptiles, mamamls, some of which returned to the sea, after dinasours.....humans after mammals.....
where are the missing links, we never have found any.....we can see a specis evolve..like our little toe and appendix....

....

How would we know that it wasn't the other way around... that monkeys evolved from tailless apes and grew a tail where the beginning of one was? Where does the assumption come in that tail stubs weren't the building block for something, rather than the regression of something? If all mammals are set up around the same sort of bone structures, then perhaps we evolved along a line where the tail never did make itself an apparent feature.

You write:
As a side note, I basically believed that I was the only sentient being and that everything was a figment of my imagination. That there was so much suffering in the world was therefore my fault somehow. If I could only open up my subconscious mind I could right the wrongs. Yup, psychosis. I have since learned that contrary to popular belief, we do use the full extent of our brain. Much more than that 10% rubbish, which may have fueled my insanity.

I like to hope that our brains are being used more fully as the centuries pass along - as we are certainly storing much more detailed information into them and I expect there is enough room to absorb all of the input.

The 10% use thing is one of the mythical things which people often turn into sayings of import.... especially when they can connect it to a 'learned figure' of the past..... even Freud was a drug addict - so much for knowing one's own psyche eh?

We may be using much of our brain throughout our lives as we continually stuff new information into it - but hopefully we are not at 100% 'immediate recall' of all the information - for that would offer an invitation to a breakdown in information dissemination and use. Thank god we forget and/or store much of the learned material to be used later or better still 'ignored'.

Sometimes what is not recognized is our behavior may be guided by 'forgotten information' and if we find we are not pleased at our reactions at some event in our lives or have a 'fetish' about something, we have the forgotten information stored in our heads - and ignored as nature would have it - it being unpleasant or anxiety producing. Therapy dwells on digging out much of that 'stuff' .... if it affects someone's behavior in a negative way.

Perhaps just the way it was worded. Seemed like you meant that we didn't evolve from monkeys, we evolved from apes. I don't think we did at all. I think we are apes, like Gorillas, and Orangutans. Though I think it's safe to say we all shared some common ancestor.

So you just can't stand it when I don't respond to you're baiting is that it?
Is that why you are running from thread to thread telling me how much you really love me?

For all those people who cry when the place turns into nothing but flamed out thread after flamed out thread, this is the point when you should be encouraging this guy to find a new game to play.
