A protest is planned against the Chick-fil-A restaurant chain which is opening a location in the heart of Toronto on Friday.
The U.S.-based company has made international headlines since 2012 for its anti-LGBTQ stances and promotion of conservative Christian beliefs.
The company believes in “biblical definition” of marriage between a man and a woman and groups have uncovered tax filings where Chick-fil-A’s charitable arm made millions in donations to organizations opposed to gay rights.
Some of the organizations that have received charitable donations from Chick-fil-A have been labelled as “hate groups” by the Southern Poverty Law Centre, an Alabama-based legal advocacy group for civil rights.
The controversy sparked protests against Chick-fil-A across the U.S., although the company’s books didn’t indicate a decline in profits.
Requests for an interview about the Toronto protest went unanswered by Chick-fil-A on Tuesday.
The protest is planned for Friday, starting at 10:30 a.m., as the chain opens its Toronto location at 709 Yonge St., south of Bloor St. Organizers are hoping to keep the demonstration going all weekend.
It will be two-fold: The company is perceived to be anti-gay and animal rights activists allege the fast-food chain is connected to abusive treatment of chickens.

“Oppression can take many forms, and Chick-fil-A’s actions against the LGBTQ and other communities are just one example,” alleged demonstration organizer Emmett Genser with Liberation TO.
“When a company’s business is to exploit and kill chickens for profit it is founded in a violent ideology. Violence is not always physical, and the politics that Chick-fil-A advocates for is just that.”
The City of Toronto said in a statement that its business licence application “requirements would not include any information that would bring to light an anti-LGBTQ position, unless there were criminal charges laid, as a criminal background check is one of the requirements.”
