A protest is planned against the Chick-fil-A restaurant chain which is opening a location in the heart of Toronto on Friday.
The U.S.-based company has made international headlines since 2012 for its anti-LGBTQ stances and promotion of conservative Christian beliefs.
The company believes in “biblical definition” of marriage between a man and a woman and groups have uncovered tax filings where Chick-fil-A’s charitable arm made millions in donations to organizations opposed to gay rights.
Some of the organizations that have received charitable donations from Chick-fil-A have been labelled as “hate groups” by the Southern Poverty Law Centre, an Alabama-based legal advocacy group for civil rights.
The controversy sparked protests against Chick-fil-A across the U.S., although the company’s books didn’t indicate a decline in profits.
Requests for an interview about the Toronto protest went unanswered by Chick-fil-A on Tuesday.
The protest is planned for Friday, starting at 10:30 a.m., as the chain opens its Toronto location at 709 Yonge St., south of Bloor St. Organizers are hoping to keep the demonstration going all weekend.
It will be two-fold: The company is perceived to be anti-gay and animal rights activists allege the fast-food chain is connected to abusive treatment of chickens.

“Oppression can take many forms, and Chick-fil-A’s actions against the LGBTQ and other communities are just one example,” alleged demonstration organizer Emmett Genser with Liberation TO.
“When a company’s business is to exploit and kill chickens for profit it is founded in a violent ideology. Violence is not always physical, and the politics that Chick-fil-A advocates for is just that.”
The City of Toronto said in a statement that its business licence application “requirements would not include any information that would bring to light an anti-LGBTQ position, unless there were criminal charges laid, as a criminal background check is one of the requirements.”

On a wing and prayer or crying foul, people are set to flock to Toronto’s newest chicken restaurant.
On their opening weekend in Canada, American Chick-fil-A is expected to attract protesters who are upset about the popular U.S.-based chain’s social conservative values.
But, the Toronto Sun has learned, they may also be on the receiving end of the heart-felt blessings of thousands of Christian worshippers, too.
As Sun reporter Kevin Connor reported, the Toronto grand opening for its outlet at Yonge and Bloor Sts. is set for Friday at 10:30 a.m.. Liberation TO has vowed to protest, stating “oppression can take many forms and Chick-fil-A’s (has taken) actions against the LGBTQ and other communities.”
Saying “cluck off discrimination,” it was also announced Thursday activists from 519 Church St. “and our Army of Lovers will be joining Liberation TO on Friday, Sept, 6 to protest the opening of Toronto’s first Chick-fil-A store — known for its anti-LGBTQ2S agenda and politics.”
Christian groups, meanwhile, are hatching a plan to respond with a mass prayer in front of the new establishment during Saturday’s planned Jesus in the City parade.
“The 20th annual Jesus in the City parade will stop in front of the new Chick fil-A and thousands will pray for freedom and security,” said a news release from Rev. Charles McVety, president of the Canada Christian College.
“It is sad that people will express hatred of a business due to its expression of faith. We prayed to stop Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s attack on our youth applying for summer jobs and we won. We will pray that those who hate us will find love in their hearts and support freedom.”
The Jesus in the City parade in past years has drawn in excess of 10,000 worshippers. This year, in response to the protest of what is considered a Christian-led business, they will stop to pray at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
McVety said those protesting the opening of the restaurant are “trying to shut it down simply because it is Christian and gives money to family values causes.” To combat this, “the participants in the Jesus in the City parade will say a prayer for the freedom and safety of Chick-fil-A, it’s employees, suppliers and customers.”
Then, after the parade, many feeling peckish will go back as customers for a snack.

“Every time I am in the United States I go to Chick-fil-A,” said McVety. “They have an amazing chicken sandwich and am looking forward to doing that Saturday.”
The Southern Poverty Law Centre deems America’s third largest fast food company a “hate group” because of its “biblical definition” of marriage being between a man and a woman.
Said the 519: “Chick-fil-A has given millions of dollars to anti-LGBTQ2S organizations, including known hate groups and proponents of conversion therapy, and continues to do so every year” and “does not offer protection, benefits, or even diversity training for its LGBTQ2S employees.”
But McVety argues “the founders are well respected Christians” who “do not allow their stores to open on Sunday and support family values organizations.” He adds the fast-food chain have become “a target for radical left groups who attack them with protests and try to drive them out of business.”
Time will tell how hot the deep fryer will get, but here’s hoping no one eggs anyone on or ends up in the coop!

WARMINGTON: Father's pride outshines Chick fil-A protests

For Tony Yang the opening of Toronto’s first Chick-fil-A was not a day of protest.
It was a day of celebration — celebration of the Canadian and American dream and of his son Wilson achieving his.
Sure there were protesters from animal and gay rights organizations outside. And sure there was long line-up all day to go in and try to the offerings of American’s third largest fast food restaurant chain.
But for Tony this was about his son’s first day as the franchise’s owner at the corner of Yonge and Bloor Sts.
“I am so proud,” Tony said, through the loud chorus of protesters yelling “shame.”

No shame, however, for Tony.
“I worked throughout my life in Chinese restaurants,” the proud father said.
His sons, Wilson and William, grew up around the restaurant culture as a result.
And now Wilson is making his own mark.
“It’s fantastic,” said Tony.
Supported by his brother and his dad, as well as a large contingent of staff, Wilson dove in head first Friday as the doors opened to the public and dozens of media members stood outside to cover the demonstrations from activists.

At some points it got heated and emotional.
“I think it is really important for us today that we can foster some meaningful conversations about the realities of when people have discriminatory policies, when anyone is targeted because of the sexual orientation, their gender identity, their gender expression,” said 519 spokesperson Jaymie Sampa.
The protest also featured an appearance by “drag queens” Helena Poison and Tash Riot who said their “peaceful” approach was designed as more of an awareness campaign.
Many from the LGBTQ came out to protest Chick-fil-A’s previous support of family-based charitable efforts they charge has funded conversion therapy and pushed anti-Gay initiatives — many yelling “hey hey, ho ho, homophobia has got to go” and holding signs that said “cluck off.”
“They invest millions in anti-LGBTQ programs,” said Mo Zabian. “It’s hate.”

One high-profile person who stood in the line for lunch was none other than Canada Christian College President Dr. Charles McVety, who Saturday will be part of the Jesus on the City Parade that plans to stop in front of Chick-fil-A to offer a prayer of protection.
“Christians will not be driven out of the city,” said McVety, adding protesters would never think of doing something like this at a Muslim or Jewish business.
He also said funding of a family values programs and closing for business on Sundays are not hateful acts.
“We have sympathy for the gay community, we love the gay community, but we would never commend anyone for shouting people down,” said McVety. “This is schoolyard bullying tactics and we are against bullying.”
While the protesters — some of who also performed a “die-in” at the front door by lying on the sidewalk in support of the chickens slaughtered for food consumption — garnered a lot of media coverage, it did not stop the line of new customers.
“I am just here for a chicken sandwich with my son,” said Saurabh Chabra. “I am not interested in the politics of it.”
Chick-fil-A customers Jackie Mensah and Amanda David were among the many hungry people who visited the new franchise in Toronto on Friday, September 6, 2019. (Stan Behal/Toronto Sun/Postmedia Network)
Some protesters harassed and heckled people in line, suggesting their support of Chick-fil-A aligns they with supporting homophobia.
But Sydney Dumlao and Erin Gonzales said they don’t hate or look down on anybody — they wanted lunch.
Same goes for Jackie Mensah and Amanda David, who stood up for themselves.
“I do feel intimidated but we came today and we are going to be coming back many times,” said Jackie. “The chicken sandwiches are so great.”
This was music to Tony Yang’s ears because great chicken sandwiches and other menu items for the people of Toronto is what his son’s business is here to offer.

Muslims generally don't bother me. Christians are always in my face. All religious people should **** off.
That wasn't really my point. My point is the perpetually outraged leftists are perfectly happy to go after anyone or group that is anti-gay, EXCEPT when a group of muslims are the problem. I don't know about you, but I call that two-faced cowardice.

Perpetually outraged leftist are just as funny as perpetually outraged social conservatives. You should both **** off and leave us normal folks alone.
