Some interesting ideas. But never underestimate the tendency of the really stupid to inflict self-harm. I suspect that the only thing that would really reduce tobacco use would be to have a situation in which all tobacco companies are banned and smokers are forced to grow their own. The problem with that, however, would be that it would lead to an immediate underground market.
You can already grow your own.

15kg a year.

P.S. there already is an underground tobacco market.

Not all who inflict self harm are stupid. Trauma can play a role too. I know of one man who became alcoholic right after his son die and a woman who starte smoking during an ugly divorce. She had stabbed herself in the leg around that time too where her husband who'd cheated on her (the rason for the divorce) tried to take the Kids.

If you think only the stupid do drugs or self harm, then you should read up on trauma and addiction.

With that, keeping drugs out of site at citical times in one's life could cut back on addictions.

Another simple solution: make tobacco consumption a fineable ofence and trafficking leading to incarceration.
I define stupid as knowing the negative consequences of an action and yet doing it anyway.

And I think you last suggestion has been tried with pretty much every illegal drug.

Most Canadians know that shaming smokers with cat calls of stupidity is NOT the solution.

If he knows that what he's doing harms him, then by the definition of the word, he is not stupid. Mentally unhealthy, depressed, traumatized, addicted, or maybe one or a combination of the above or something else, but not stupid.

To be stupid, he'd have to not know that what he is doing is harming him.

..or know that what he is doing is harming him, and keep doing it because he's stupid. Figure he has Free Health, and the Canadian Gov't will care for him when he gets sick and doesn't care.. stupid. :p

Some does a person who attempts suicide, or stabs himself in the leg, or takes alcohol, tobacco etc. to cope necessarily stupid or mentally unstable ?

I think you are confusing ignorance with stupidity. One of the definitions of stupid is lacking common sense. That is the meaning I use.

Some a person who intention allé heurts himself lacks the commis sensé to know that hé shouldn'a Hurt himself. I'd guess that in most cases, they know very well that they should not be doing what they are doing.

I do agree that smoking is stupid. But it is the same kind of stupid that exists in many aspects of society.....extreme sports, fast food restaurants, alcohol, etc.

Well, like smokers, I don't like Harlies, Kentucky fried, nor drunks outside my window in summer.

There was a time when stupid doctors prescribed stupid cigarettes to stupid people in the stupid 50s
;)
