More attempts to make Jesus fit the speaker (writer, bumper-sticker buyer)'s own political notions. Maybe a better sticker would be "Jesus was the first Rohrschach test."
Jesus may or may not have been a person, but the Christ myth presented in the gospels is fiction. So people can make of it whatever they want. Just look how many versions of the Arthur myth there are.

Religion is like homeowners' associations. The fury of the battle is equalled only by the pettiness of the stakes.

Which parts? Jesus was a socialist - as left as left can be. I could never understand why so many professed Christians are Cons and Repubs. Seems like an oxymoron to me.

Yep, Jesus was a socialist. He renounced wealth, lived communally, taught pacifism and non-violence, stressed equality, was convinced a just society was achievable,...

" To whom is McGee referring (in this passage and today), and what observation is he making about the "professed believer"?
No doubt he is talking about the born again "saved" Christian, who believes that once saved always saved. As a result they behave in a manner that caused the god of the bible to say "not all who cry lord lord will see the kingdom of heaven".

I wish Jesus was around today to see him condemn all the delusional right wing America haters on this forum.

True but for the one exception, making profession in the only Church sanctioned by God. Profession into the Catholic Church is the
goal of those whom the Holy Spirit has blessed with Wisdom. The result is a pleased Christ, who, has the first member, can witness through this contented person's contribution combined with others the unfolding of the Deitic plan.

But the statement is also symptomatic. One could find himself unsatisfied in a religion outside the Church. To him there is something missing which does not satisfy. It has the earmarks of human tampering. He finds the full complement of the Sacraments instituted by Christ are not available to him(as if man knows better what he should need) in his chosen church. The loss of these sacraments effects a lessening of grace he would otherwise gain. Eventually he may conclude in his despondence something to the effect that ...

..."Unfortunately, the greatest hindrance to the cause of Christ today is the professed believer."

"When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table. But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal. Then the Lord said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? But now as for what is inside you—be generous to the poor, and everything will be clean for you. “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone. “Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces. “Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which people walk over without knowing it.” One of the experts in the law answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.” Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them. “Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them. So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. Because of this, God in his wisdom said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’ Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all. “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.” When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, waiting to catch him in something he might say." (Luke 11:37-54 NIV)

In his commentary concerning Luke 11:37-54, J. Vernon McGee states: "Unfortunately, the greatest hindrance to the cause of Christ today is the professed believer." To whom is McGee referring (in this passage and today), and what observation is he making about the "professed believer"?

In this passage, McGee uses the term "professed believer" to identify the Jewish religious establishment (the Pharisees and the experts in the law) whom Jesus referred to as hypocrites, meaning outwardly pious but inwardly corrupt. A "professed believer" today would be anyone who claims Christ but fails to recognize or resemble Him.
