Federal marijuana legislation to be introduced in spring 2017, Philpott says

Federal legislation to legalize marijuana will be ready in a year, Canada's health minister told the UN in New York today.

"We will introduce legislation in spring 2017 that ensures we keep marijuana out of the hands of children and profits out of the hands of criminals," Jane Philpott said in her prepared speech to delegates.

"We will work with law enforcement partners to encourage appropriate and proportionate criminal justice measures. We know it is impossible to arrest our way out of this problem," she said.

The three-day meetings, which conclude on Thursday, are reviewing the progress and implementation of the UN's 2009 action plan on drugs to assess ongoing challenges in combating the world's drug problems.

Bill Blair, the parliamentary secretary to the justice minister who serves as Canada's point man on the legalization legislation, is with Philpott in New York.

The health minister said the government' proposed marijuana policy challenges the status quo, but will enhance the safety of youth.

The federal Liberal Party's election pledge on pot would breach three global treaties on illicit drug use signed by previous Canadian governments.

For medical purposes with M.D.'s prescription would be good and that's where it should end! :)

A little truth in what you say, Johnny! The old gaffers are a little too clever for him! :) :)

I'm thinking this will not be a good year to be a dope smoker....

Yep, and most other years! :) :)

If this legislation provides for individuals to grow a plant or two of their own, it will be in line with what many of my friends and I were hoping for. If it doesn't then nothing much changes.

Like they do with alcohol. If you want to get pissed go see your family doctor. If the doctor is away drop into emergency.

Pot should be treated like alcohol and tobacco. No smoking pot where you can't smoke a cigarette. Also appropriate taxation and age restrictions should be put in place. There are far better uses for our police force that worrying about pot smokers or growers.

But whether this gets done has always and will continue to be a non-issue for me. I will not vote for or against a government based upon what they plan or don't plan to do about pot. It is good that he is keeping his promise as this was one of his big ones.

Well, there is a silver lining to it in two regards..........one of source of Gov't coffers and two gets it out of the hands of the H.A. and their ilk! And yes, better to have the cops concentrating on crime that is killing people!

Nowhere in that article did it say They are planning to make pot legal. It said they were going to make a bunch of new drug laws. Not necessarily the same thing or even close to what TrudOWE promised.
Today on facebook I read that over two thousand Canadians have been charged with pot offences since shiny pony promised to make it legal.

i see no reason to legalize something that is equally as dumb as smoking tobacco.
Alcohol has been legal for decades. WHere you been hiding?

Just because you see the difference in wording doesn't mean our educated youth will....

They see Trudeau and weed in the same sentence they think, "ar my gawd we won"

Trudeau sees easy votes..
