Regardless of whether this sick actions are perpetuated by the Clergy or individuals within the public realm, it is abhorrent.

There are many examples of those that are in a position of trust that violate that trust and abuse children... All sickos, regardless of their faith, lack of such, profession, etc must be dealt with accordingly as opposed to focusing exclusively on one target and willfully ignoring the other perpetrators.

I strongly suspect that a pedophile will gravitate towards the path of least resistance to feed their sickness in which case, the problem never goes away.

Some people have an unhealthy fixation in taking a run at the Pope, Church or Vatican more so than dealing with the overall, actual problem.

It's kind of a sickness in and of itself

It's probably more than 2%.. but its unlikely to be more the 6% (4 - 6% is the result of most studies). These apply to pedophiles and pedarests (who prey of teenagers).. almost all.. 95%.. are homosexual in character. It is also more prevalent in the West, where social taboos against homosexuality are less stringent.

But many of these predators were drawn to the priesthood because of the opportunity and protection it provided to them. That has been systematically chipped away. These days ONE sexual incident with a child or adolescent is immediately reported to police for investigation and prosecution.. and the individual will be de-frocked (laicized) on confirmation. Also any bishop who protects an abuser, will lose his job.

Young Catholics are also advised of proper priestly conduct as part of the Catechesis. Many dioceses now require an independent adult be present whenever a priest and child meet. And certainly parents are far more vigilent of potential abuse these days.

It might never be totally eliminated.. but you can certainly create a culture where it almost impossible for child abusers to operate with impunity.
