Pharmaceutical says no to death by injection

This is interesting news, apparently this pharmaceutical has the only license in the US to produce the pentobarbitol sodium injection that is used in the three drug lethal injection cocktail. On July 1, 2011, Danish pharmaceutical Lundbeck announced that they would be changing their end use agreement to ban the sale of the drug for use in lethal injections.

Lundbeck today announced that the company has moved to alter the distribution of its medicine Nembutal® (pentobarbital sodium injection, USP) in order to restrict its application as part of lethal injection in the U.S. Going forward, Nembutal will be supplied exclusively through a specialty pharmacy drop ship program that will deny distribution of the product to prisons in U.S. states currently active in carrying out the death penalty by lethal injection. The company notified its distributors of the plan in late June.

The new distribution program ensures that hospitals and treatment centers will continue to have access to Nembutal for therapeutic purposes. Under the program, Lundbeck will review all Nembutal orders before providing clearance for shipping the product and deny orders from prisons located in states currently active in carrying out death penalty sentences. http://www.lundbeck.com/investor/releases/ReleaseDetails/Release_1527337_EN.asp

I am sure the prisons will just end up finding someone else to supply them with what they need. If they aren't able to do that, then perhaps they will just find alternate methods of execution.

Well nobody else is licensed for that product in the US, but yes I'm sure they can find others who produce similar drugs. But who is to say that other drug companies won't also do the same? It's a small market to sell to, and it's bad rap.

That's true, but I honestly don't think this will cause them to suddenly stop performing executions(if that is even what the company is trying to do). They will just go to other methods such as electric chair, hanging, or firing squad, won't they?
