Pete Rose: I had sex with teen girl

Disgraced baseball great Pete Rose has been beaned by another of life’s curve balls.
A woman has come now forward claiming she had a sexual relationship with the game’s all-time hits leader when she was just 14 or 15 years old in the 1970s.
Court papers were filed Monday as part of the former Cincinnati Reds star’s defamation lawsuit against a lawyer whose probe into Rose’s gambling kept Charlie Hustle out of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Lawyer John Dowd claimed during a 2015 radio interview that Rose had a penchant for raping teen girls during spring training in Florida.
Dowd introduced new court papers in Philadelphia featuring a sworn statement from the alleged victim, known as Jane Doe.
“In 1973, when I was 14 or 15 years old, I received a phone call from Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds,” Doe said in the complaint. “Sometime after that, Pete Rose and I began meeting at a house in Cincinnati. It was at that house … before my 16th birthday, Pete Rose began a sexual relationship with me.”
Rose allegedly met the girl outside Ohio for sexual romps.
The former Reds manager admitted that the sex didn’t begin until after the girl turned 16 and added that they never had sex outside Ohio.
The legal age for sex in Ohio is 16.
At the time of the affair, Rose was in his 30s and married with two children. His lawyer called time out on the furor.
“At this point it’s just a big distraction,” Ray Genco said. “It tips me off that (Dowd) really can’t defend himself.”
Rose was banned from baseball in 1989 for gambling on America’s pastime. In 1992, he was permanently placed on the Baseball Hall of Fame’s ineligible list.
Cincinnati Enquirer sports columnist Paul Daugherty says the former leader of the Big Red Machine should have let Dowd’s comments slide.
“The same quality that made Rose the Hit King has cost him over and over since: His supreme need to win,” Daugherty wrote.

Not saying what he did was right, but lets face it fame, drugs, and the 70's, it was a different world back then.

OK, I'm gonna say it.

In the 60s, 70s, and 80s, things were different. We were emerging from the dark ages of savage sexual repression, and the pendulum swung too far, as pendula do, to "if it feels good, do it."

We figured if you were sexually mature, why not have sex if you wanted to? Better than the insane hypocrisy of prior ages.

And it led to situations where adults, both male and female, used their superior social and psychological skills to take their pleasure of kids, male and female. And that's bad.

Now we have a more sophisticated understanding of sex, adolescence, social and psychological pressure, and motivations, and we've made new rules. Basically, details aside, they read "Thou shalt not f*ck a young teen. No matter how much you want to. No matter how much they want you to."

That's wrong, too. There are some 14-year-olds who can handle it, just as there are some 44-year-olds who can't. But all in all, society and the law deal in hard-and-fast lines. And this line is better than the old line. When in doubt, err on the side of protection. We'll keep working on it.

But, in the context of the time, absent evidence of coercion or undue influence, I'm gonna give Pete a pass on this.

Bring on the hysterical shrieks of how I'm a child molester, or a supporter of child molesters, or whatever. I've been yelled at by people a lot better at it than y'all.

As a Reds fan, i approve of this message.

That is a rather arbitrary number. Years don't make you smart or wise. Most people never evolve past 8 - 12 year old emotional level. The ego is a terrible task master. Most people never reach the age of reason.

The law views it as an arbitrary number. And this whole thing is a legal matter.

I guess... I don't understand why wait so long to pursue legal action on him. I understand a 15 year old not wanting to... but maybe say 20 years later... not 47 years
How is that even provable??

Woman says she had sexual relationship with Pete Rose as an underage teen
Kristen De Groot, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

PHILADELPHIA — A woman said she had a sexual relationship with Pete Rose in the 1970s, starting when she was 14 or 15 years old, according to her sworn testimony submitted to a court Monday.
The testimony was presented by the defence as part of a federal lawsuit Rose filed last year in Philadelphia against a lawyer whose investigation got baseball’s all-time hits leader kicked out of Major League Baseball for gambling.
Rose contends John Dowd defamed him in 2015 by saying on the radio that the former baseball great had raped young teen girls during spring training. Rose, 76, has acknowledged having a relationship with the woman beginning when she was 16, the age of consent in Ohio.
Rose’s lawyer Ray Genco said the woman’s claims are unverified.
“At this point it’s just a big distraction,” Genco said. “It tips me off that (Dowd) really can’t defend himself.”
The attorney also accused Dowd of dragging “Pete’s name through the mud.”
Rose alleges in the lawsuit that Dowd damaged his reputation and endorsement deals during a July 2015 interview on WCHE-AM radio in West Chester.
Dowd investigated Rose in 1989 for gambling on the Cincinnati Reds while managing the team, a violation of baseball’s rules. Rose accepted a lifetime ban, and the Hall of Fame decided in 1991 that anyone on the permanently ineligible list could not appear on a Hall ballot.
Dowd said during the radio appearance that Rose associate Michael Bertolini told investigators he “ran young girls” to Rose during spring training, which Dowd called “statutory rape every time,” according to Rose’s lawsuit. Bertolini’s lawyers have denied that.
The woman, identified as Jane Doe in Monday’s filing, said Rose called her in 1973, when she was 14 or 15, and they began a sexual relationship in Cincinnati that lasted several years. She also alleges Rose met her in locations outside Ohio for sex.
Rose acknowledged in a statement accompanying Monday’s filing that he did have a relationship with the woman, but he said it started when she was 16. He also states they never had sex outside Ohio.
At the time, Rose was in his mid-30s and was married with two kids.
Dowd’s lawyer David Tobin said he couldn’t comment on the latest filing.
Rose, who lives in Las Vegas, had applied for reinstatement to the game in 2015. Not long after, Dowd was asked on WCHE-AM whether he found Rose to be a likable person.
“Michael Bertolini, you know, told us that he not only ran bets but he ran young girls for him down at spring training, ages 12 to 14,” Dowd responded. “Isn’t that lovely? So that’s statutory rape every time you do that.”
Genco said Rose knew what he was getting into when he filed the defamation lawsuit.
“He decided to take a stand against these heinous allegations,” he said. “We filed a winning case and it’s going to remain like that.”
Dowd, 76, is an experienced Washington attorney who is currently on President Donald Trump’s legal team in the Russia investigation.

Phillies plan to honour Rose scrapped amid teen sex scandal

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Phillies have cancelled plans to honour Pete Rose next week because of a woman’s claim she had a sexual relationship with baseball’s hit king when she was a minor.
The woman, identified as Jane Doe this week in a court filing, said Rose called her in 1973, when she was 14 or 15, and they began a sexual relationship in Cincinnati that lasted several years. She also alleges Rose met her in locations outside Ohio for sex.
Rose’s lawyer says the woman’s claims are unverified.
The Phillies were going to induct Rose into their Wall of Fame in an on-field ceremony on Aug. 12. Rose bobbleheads were going to be distributed on Aug. 11.
The Phillies will not give away the collectibles and said fans with tickets for either game can exchange them or get a refund.
“While I am truly honoured that the Phillies fans voted for me to be this year’s Wall of Fame inductee, I am concerned that other matters will overshadow the goodwill associated with Alumni Weekend, and I agree with the decision not to participate,” Rose said.
Rose, who was banned from baseball in 1989, made four All-Star appearances and helped the Phillies to one of their two world championships during his five seasons in Philadelphia from 1979-83.
Rose was selected through fan voting and was set to become the 39th inductee into the club’s Wall of Fame.
“My baseball years in Philadelphia were amazing, not just because we won it all in 1980 and came close in 1983, but also because the fans welcomed me from day one,” he said in April.
But public pressure against Rose played a role in the Phillies’ decision to scrap the tribute.
The women’s claim became public from testimony presented by the defence as part of a federal lawsuit Rose filed last year in Philadelphia against a lawyer whose investigation got the Cincinnati native kicked out of Major League Baseball for gambling.
Rose contends John Dowd defamed him by saying on the radio that the former baseball great had raped young teen girls during spring training. Rose has acknowledged having a relationship with the woman beginning when she was 16, the age of consent in Ohio.
Rose alleges in the lawsuit that Dowd damaged his reputation and endorsement deals during a July 2015 interview on WCHE-AM radio.
Dowd said during the radio appearance that Rose associate Michael Bertolini told investigators he “ran young girls” to Rose during spring training, which Dowd called “statutory rape every time,” according to Rose’s lawsuit. Bertolini’s lawyers have denied that.
Rose acknowledged in a statement accompanying Monday’s filing that he did have a relationship with the woman, but he said it started when she was 16. He also states they never had sex outside Ohio.
At the time, Rose was in his mid-30s and was married with two kids.
Rose’s personal problems never seemed to affect his popularity in baseball. He’s a regular on the autograph circuit and does broadcast work for Fox.
The Cincinnati Reds unveiled a bronze sculpture this season outside Great American Ball Park depicting Rose’s headfirst slide. He was inducted into the Reds’ Hall of Fame last June and had his No. 14 retired.
The 76-year-old hits leader is banned from baseball’s Hall of Fame. Commissioner Rob Manfred has denied Rose’s latest petition for reinstatement, but hasn’t ruled out making him eligible for Cooperstown someday.
The fourth annual Philly Sports Roast also said it cancelled its Aug. 10 event with Rose as the guest of honour. Tickets that started at $150 will be refunded.
Philadelphia’s SugarHouse Casino said it cancelled Rose’s scheduled Aug. 12 autograph signing that was to be held just hours before his Wall of Fame induction. Refunds also were available for those tickets.
The Phillies will still honour more than 40 alumni next weekend.

No surprise. He sold his soul and the baseball game for almost nothing. Now he admits to being a pervert too?
