Patrol rifle stolen out of Calgary Police officer’s car

CALGARY – A patrol rifle inside a locked hard cover carrying case was stolen out of an off-duty Calgary Police officer’s personal car Saturday night, in a car prowling.
The officer went into a restaurant in the 0-100 block of Crowfoot Terrace N.W and parked his car in a parking lot.
When he returned to his car, he saw that it had been broken into. The patrol rifle case, with everything inside of it, was taken.
Within the locked case, there’s also two magazines containing 28 rounds each.
The officer had taken the rifle home to clean it.
Calgary Police are searching the area for possible CCTV footage and to see if any other vehicles were targeted.
Police are asking for the public’s help, if anyone has any information surrounding this incident, they’re asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.

When transporting weapons, are they not required to be locked in the trunk with the ammunition stored and locked in a different location than the weapon itself?

At the very least, a reprimand for careless transport and storage is in order. He went to a restaurant and left the rifle in view? Careless in the extreme. At the very least, he should have gone directly home and put the rifle in a gun safe, before going to a restaurant. And, why is he cleaning it at home?

Everything was done correctly. I can only assume he used a trigger lock as well as required.

Leaving Any Class of Firearm in an Unattended Vehicle

Lock non-restricted firearms and locked containers carrying restricted or prohibited firearms in the trunk or in a similar lockable compartment.
If the vehicle does not have a trunk or lockable compartment, put firearms and firearm containers out of sight inside the vehicle and lock the vehicle.
If you are in a remote wilderness area and cannot lock your non-restricted firearms inside your vehicle, unload them and put them out of sight. Attach a secure locking device to the firearms unless they are needed for predator control.

then this is how i feel about it

When us regular Canadians get a "Restricted" handgun license we are when transporting the device to go from Point "A" to Point "B" ONLY. That mostly means from the house to the shooting range. We are NOT allowed to detour to Point "C". Now the officer was off-duty which means he should be subjected to the same laws as the rest of us Canadians regardless of his job title.

regardless if its single fire, because if he was a regular Canadian with a restricted rifle modified with single fire the RCMP would be up in his *** like no THANG if was not a cop, for him to turn it in.

It was a C-8 rifle...........a Colt Canada made semi-auto version of the M4.
