Author of "Hotter than Hell" Mark Tushingham, whose day job is as an Environment Canada scientist, was ordered not to appear at the National Press Club to give a speech discussing his science fiction story about global warming in the not-too-distant future.

There you have it.
PM Harper does what GW Bush does , again - in January 2006 a NASA scientist complained of the same kind of stifling.

"Climate Expert Says NASA Tried to Silence Him"

An open and free debate, or at least information flowing, is essential to saving our planet from our excesses. This info flow being stopped by Bush and Harper, it might be assumed they KNOW something we don't, something so big that it will knock global warming off the importance list.

Even Bush and Harper must understand by now what a threat global warming is, its like removing a person's digestive tract and hoping he does okay. What this thing is that they know must be big. Maybe its something like "faith". Maybe an old prophesy. Maybe visitors from space have talked to them both and told them it won't matter if we have global warming.

Maybe they are both just that greedy and power hungry, but they and their offspring will be living with a damaged atmosphere for a few hundred years. I guess its worth it for them, but its a darn shame for the rest of us.

They must both be removed, over this issue alone, because it shows they are either stopping life-saving information flow, or they are extremist religious wanks who are subjecting all of us to their "faith".

I hardly think orders to some obscure bureaucrat to avoid speaking at a private meeting came from the PMO's office.

That said, if the order DID come from the PMO, it is outrageous and completely unacceptable.

In fact, it is outrageous no matter where the order came from.

A spokesperson for Ambrose said the speech was billed as coming from an Environment Canada scientist and even though his book is a work of fiction, he would appear to be speaking in an official capacity.

Some times mere hints and veiled threats are more effective than a smoking memo or email. I wonder how much duck tape they are going threw in Ottawa?

RE: P.M. Harper Kills Sci

man this is AWESOME...

I really hope that no-one in other parties is taking notes so as to get away with this kind of crap "the right way"

truly sad, but maybe I would support it if he could also stop that stupid davinci code film from coming out......

Seriously tho, I suppose that it IS sorta within the federal governments "power" to do stuff like this... I just would tend to think that it is a pretty flagrant abuse of the power, though

Scary stuff

they were within their rights but WAY over the top.

two points

1) Public appearances by public servants require approval of the PMO now so it WAS Harper's office that made the call and
2) He had been described in Embassy Magazine as an "Ottawa-based environmental scientist" so I think maybe the guy's publicist wasn't as sloppy as it seems.

a fine taste of things to come.

Some of you have a problem Harper allegedly interfering with this speech/book promotion, but when books are banned at the border at the behest of your government, you look the other way and don't care. Why?!?!?!

I think not, I could stand corrected, but according to what I have seen on Jurisprudence (coverage on CPAC of procedings in the Supreme Court of Canada), such books in question are banned on the initiative of the Commissioner of Customs and Revenue, through his or her agents in institutes such as the Canada Border Services Agency.

Harper is a Christian Neo-Con Corporatist and so's his whole party of five gallon heads in ten gallon hats. Fornicate the whole rodeo. The longer he stays in Canada the less I want to be here.
It's riot time. :x

Well of course it is real. PM Harper is doing all he can to keep global warming in doubt - the longer the oilmen can keep it going the better. For them. So they think.

This isn't so startling that it cannot be believed, but a few replies were saying this is incredulous. I think those posters are starting to see the light now - this really is what Harper is - a Fossil Fool who will do "whatever it takes" to keep the oil flowing, and at the highest prices possible.

... PM Harper is no friend of the average person... only the Elite Wealthy corporatists.

Is Global Warming Getting Colder?

Dr. Hansen cited as evidence that the edges of the Greenland ice sheet were rapidly melting. He attributed this to man-made greenhouse gases. Apparently Dr. Hansen had not read up on the history of Greenland because, as Dr. Dennis Avery, a senior fellow for Hudson Institute, pointed out, "Melting around the edges is exactly what the Vikings saw on Greenland 1,000 years ago when they named the island–for its green coastal meadows."

During a period climatologists now call the "Medieval Warming", the Vikings thrived for some 300 years. Then the "Little Ice Age" began and, by 1408, Greenland was, well, really cold and the Vikings had abandoned the place. Dr. Avery points out that "Our panic-prone scientists seem to have forgotten their own ice cores, drilled deep into the Greenland ice sheet in the 1980s." Those ice cores revealed that the Earth is in a constant cycle between hot and cold climate.

It is instructive that, after the 1970s during which environmentalists were warning of a coming Ice Age, they changed course and began telling everyone "global warming" was coming. And where were all those man-made greenhouse gases in the pre-industrial age of the Vikings and elsewhere around the world that experienced the Medieval Warming? And why didn’t they fend off the Little Ice Age?

Is this your way of saying the current government's intention to assert its sovereignty over the northwest passage is a red herring?
