Northern Ontario,
Most dues, go to paying Union leadership. In Canada we have free health care. Remember?

You mean a registered business.

Are you talking about self employed tradesmen, or employees?

That was really a guess?

The trades people at the mill get a tax receipt (deduction) for their tools but not for safety boots because they were partly subsidized by the company...

Tradesmen that have a contract that indicate they supply their own tools, get to write them off. Employees that have their tools supplied, usually can't, or shouldn't. lol.

As a contractor, I can right off everything I buy for work. I also get to pay for all of it, lol.

Yup... the only thing that tradesmen got supplied by the company was their tool box (not the tools in it) and coveralls...and when they retire the company supplies the truck to haul their tool box home....if they don't already have one...

Dentise. Drugs. Eyeware. etc...
Ya, I figured that's what you meant, but it was a great opportunity to use that free health care comment.

And most Union dues, still go to paying leadership.

They can hand out a special tax form to employees, but usually only Formen get it.
I have no idea what you're talking about.

When I was employed by a company, on a payroll, I was either given the receipt for the tool, so I could file it. Or the company supplied the tool.

It depends on the contract.

Tradesmen Employee's.
I qualified that question with an edit. "or employees without a tool clause in a contract"

Northern Ontario,
Very few unions have a "extended" health coverage insurance (Glasses dental..ext) included in their dues....the only one I'm aware of that had such insurance was the Pipeline unions because you constantly work out of province where you would have trouble with provincial coverage...

Well you have

The trainning funds
The benifits and pention administration funds
The Cost to run the hall.

Leadership fall's under that last one.
it can't be much more then 60% of the cost.

When I was employed by a company, on a payroll, I was either given the receipt for the tool, so I could file it. Or the company supplied the tool.

I tryed to get tax credit for the receipt I had last year. they told me I needed a special tax form from my employer.

Its not covered here in Ontario. But there is a tax exempt for it.

I guess you have never filed any taxes......

Well I have. Thousands of them!

You do have to have a form from your employer that says that you have to supply Tools in order to perform your job. Form T2200-Conditions of Employment.

If a Mechanic does not supply his own tools, he does not get hired. Employers have down loaded this cost for various reasons-breakage, theft or other losses.

Many employees now have to supply their own Transportation for their jobs. Again Employers down loaded this cost due to damages to Company owned vehicles, and an elimination of cost when there is no work.

Computers, Cell Phones, Radio Phones are also being, Satelite Phones, Air Cards are increasingly being requested by employers.

Safety Gear has long been on the list.

Some employees are having to supply Quads, Argos, Trailers, and Snowmobiles at some remote work places.

Really does not matter if it is a Company or an Individual. These are expenses involved in getting the job done for the Benefit of the General population and the Economy of our country.

Everyone knows there has to be more money generated for our Government to cover the cost of our very expensive Social programs and to keep up our Roads and infrastructure. No one wants to be the one that has to give up more Tax money. Someone else should get the hit---as long as it it not me.

That's not entirely true. Many dealerships and franchises like Cdn Tire or Fountain Tire supply the tools.

Regardless, a mechanic can claim that against their income as a deduction.

Employees that use their own vehicles for company work get a per diem or compensation per kilometer... I know guys that are making a good chunk of cash off of their trucks, much more than the cost of the lease or financing charges as well as gas and maintenance.

Computers, Cell Phones, Radio Phones are also being, Satelite Phones, Air Cards are increasingly being requested by employers.

This too is an expense that the employer will compensate for - assuming that they want you to use it for their business.

Easily deductible

Another per diem charge.

That's basically the long-winded way of saying the same thing I said, or Bear said, That any special equipment, clothing, tools that you need to work,....if the employer doesn't supply it....or pay you for it....Is a valid employment tax deduction:smile:

Professional dues are a business expense; why should they not be deductible?

Then union dues would also be a work expense.

Either your working tools and professional dues are a deduction, or they aren't.

Not the same thing. Tools can only be deducted once with no depreciation allowance unlike a professional persons office equipment. Professional dues are no different than union dues except you get some value out of belonging.

Most Union dues go to pay health benefits. Take them out and
All you'll end up with is a hole load of medical expense
That are also tax exempt. So that would end up only saving a small fraction
of what you think.
The tools tax exempt only work if you have a company form.
Most trades people don't have access to them and pay there tools with no
tax exempt. That exempt is to help company's

No clue about where your union dues go do you?

Well there's two Union dues on my pay stub.
One is called dues, and the other is called admin.

One is for the hall and the other go's to our plan administrator.
The one for the hall is arround 60% of the total of both.

From that they pay all the leadership and girls that work at the hall,
it pays the training center cost + all the trainers. So 60% of my dues
go to paying the overhead of running the hall.

I guess i'll have to put on my tin hat to figuer out what your talking about.

But too many deductions take away from social programs as it is a transfer of money from govt to business. Business shouldn't need tax money to sustain a sound business. A little for startups, okay. These mini-bailouts need to be trimmed.

A tradesman needs tools to work to fix a car, those are logical deductions, but a doctor does not need to pay professional dues to perform his work on patients. Give the white collar economy a very modest hit.
