Ottawa to join Supreme Court challenge of Quebec's Bill 21

The federal government plans to intervene in the legal challenge of Quebec’s Bill 21 on state secularism when it arrives at the Supreme Court and is not ruling out similar action against the language law, Bill 96, Justice Minister David Lametti said Wednesday.

“We have always said since the beginning that we have some concerns with this bill (21) and that we were going to leave some space for Quebecers to express themselves before the courts,” Lametti said at a chaotic news conference on a sidewalk in Montreal where he was interrupted by a heckler.

“When it arrives at the Supreme Court it is, by definition, a national issue and we will be there.”

The comment drew an instant rebuke from Premier François Legault in Quebec City.

“It makes no sense that Minister Lametti, one of (Prime Minister) Justin Trudeau’s ministers, even before the decision of the Court of Appeal, says he will go to the Supreme Court to challenge Bill 21,” Legault said. “It is a flagrant lack of respect of Justin Trudeau toward Quebecers, since we know the majority of Quebecers agree with Bill 21.

Quite the switcheroo from Groper's previous stance where he said, "It's up to Quebecers to decide".

The ballot boxes were already rigged. No point in letting that go to waste.
Not likely. You'd have to be a special kind of stupid to rig an election just to get a minority govt. Groper may be stupid but he's not that stupid. He's too power hungry and self-absorbed and self-serving to let an opportunity like that go to waste.
