Ontario set to retroactively raise minimum wage

So next time the economy tanks would the minimum wage go down? I'd like to see a government pull that one off.

Might be a good way to calculate government employees wages too.

It just happened. The Canadian dollar just recently lost nearly 10% by increasing our debt so high that it shook of currency traders holding CDN dollars.
:)

Remember the days when an hour of work at minimum wage was enough to buy a beer and a pack of smokes?

Considering inflation already snowballed into something the size of a house, any anti-inflation tactics that actually work lack risk.

It seems like you are just saying gibberish and hoping nobody calls you on it.

"The inflation snowball is worrisome."

"There is really no risk of that with this policy."

Do you have a question about this?

In response to:

I hope they plan on raising ODSP to match the inevitable cost of living increase a raise at the grocery store incurs. Retro would be nice....

Many questions - and please be clear whether you are discussing or trolling.

I agree with all of this, actually.

Just bear in mind we still have to consider inflation.

There is always some inflation even if the economy tanks. The wage will never go down. If the economy tanks it will show up as increased unemployment and welfare roles. The business owners will still have their swimming pools.

But this is a election ploy to an otherwise morally bankrupt government ... perhaps even a fiscally bankrupt one sooner or later. They really couldn't give a rats a-ss about joe fry cook unless he will vote for them.

There is really no risk of that with this policy.

Increased labour cost will make business recoop by increasing prices. This usually leads to inflation.

However, I think the effect in the end should balance out to be about the same standard of living right now. So the effect will be neglagible except we will all be happy happy Lieberal voters.

So you ARE trolling.... Gotcha

Do you even have to ask? That is what he does.

Increased labour cost will make business recoop by increasing prices. This usually leads to inflation.

The key word in what he was talking about was "snowball", which would refer to some sort of runaway inflation. A modest increase in just the base minimum wage of 1%-3% every year would have no risk of causing runaway inflation. It fits quite nicely into our official government policy of trying to have ~2% inflation every year.

However, I think the effect in the end should balance out to be about the same standard of living right now. So the effect will be neglagible except we will all be happy happy Lieberal voters.

That is explicitly the point. Raising the wage with the CPI allows them to stay at the same real income, not get ahead. Leaving the nominal wage the same every year actually constitutes a reduction in their real wage, which is the amount of actual goods and services they can buy with what they receive for their labour.

Keeping up with the CPI is an improvement over their current situation though.

Do you even have to ask? That is what he does.

Sure, anything you say.

But this is a election ploy to an otherwise morally bankrupt government ... perhaps even a fiscally bankrupt one sooner or later. They really couldn't give a rats a-ss about joe fry cook unless he will vote for them.

So they are implementing good public policy to try to get reelected? How horrible!

I wish more politicians would follow this path.

First of all as a small business and a seasonal employer and I have never paid
anyone minimum wage. Minimum wage as defined by government is an insult.
As for going back and changing the pay scale I find that concerning for business
and for the employee. I say that because if employees are going to receive a
retro payment that is going to affect their income tax and those files will all be
opened as well would they not?
Now minimum wage likely means they don't pay tax right? Well what if the person
is working two or three jobs and now the wage goes back and raises their tax
rate. So what? So if you or I get a tax rise we have some resourses to handle it.
People on the bottom run have none and they're worse off than before.

That is not what is being proposed. By retroactive, they mean that they are including the last 4 years of inflation into the new minimum wage that will increase with CPI.

I bet if Stephen Harper does it over the next couple of years you will be complaining the loudest about cheap politics. But it is good to know how easy your vote can be bought.
