What an amazing game. What an amazing series.
It truly is too bad one team had to lose. This was a fantastic Stanley Cup.
The second year (or third?) in a row because the Tampa-Calgary series was also excellent. But this was better because they had the new rules in and the hockey was more free-flowing.
The NHL had been such a garbage league for so long. It had become boring, with everyone playing the trap and all the clutching and grabbing. I had stopped watching the NHL for a long time. The likes of the New Jersey Devils and the Dallas Stars had made it almost unbearable to watch.
Not this year though.
The difference was Ward. Without Ward, Edmonton would be the champions.
I thought there were three defining moments
1. When Edmonton was up 3-0 in the second period of the first game and Brind'amour scored. Edmonton was all over Carolina, and that goal snapped Carolina out of their daze.
2. Roloson getting hurt. Roloson was outstanding. If he had played the whole series, Edmonton may have won.
3. Tonight, when the Oilers had a 5-on-3 advantage at the 16:00 mark of the second period and didn't score. I thought that was a golden opportunity to get back into the game.
So, its painful if you're an Oiler fan. But if you are an Oiler fan, if at the beginning of the year, someone would have told you the Oilers would have gotten all the way to the final, you probably would have taken that.
