The Syrian uprisings (and government crack down) have been a hot topic in the last few weeks. I'd like to keep all of the developments on this one in this thread so we can have a clearer picture of what is going on.

As far as I can understand, here is the chronology of recent events..

1. Thousands Protest in Syria After Gov't Forces Kill Scores of Demonstrators
2. Syria Lifts Emergency Law as Protesters Come Under Fire in Syrian City of Homs
3. Maher Arar: My Rendition & Torture in Syrian Prison Highlights U.S. Reliance on Syria as an Ally
4. Obama, allies demand resignation of Syria's Assad - World - CBC News
5. Syrian president warns against outside military intervention | World | Deutsche Welle

The Syrian president at least appears to make some concessions with the latest administration law..

Syrian president issues local administration law

DAMASCUS, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Syrian President Bashar al-Assad issued Tuesday the law of the local administration, providing for the decentralization of authority and concentrating power and responsibilities in the hands of the public, Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported.

The law is the second in 24 hours as the president has issued Monday a decree providing for the formation of a multi-party committee that will be entrusted with the authority to give the final say on applications to form parties or amend their internal systems.

Al-Assad proposed the controversial multi-party law earlier this month as part of reform measures aiming to meet the protesters' demands for broader freedom and democracy in the country.

The two laws came after a televised interview al-Assad made on Sunday with the state-run Syrian TV, during which he pledged to hold the parliamentary elections in February and voiced confidence in his government in dealing with the unrest.

Syria has been in unrest since mid-March when anti-government protests broke out in the southern province of Daraa and spread to other cities.

To quell the unprecedented anti-government crisis in the country, al-Assad recently introduced a package of new measures to ease up the government's restraints on politics and economy, including lifting the controversial state of emergency imposed in the county for around 50 years and granting general amnesty.

The Syrian authorities blamed the unrest on "armed groups and foreign conspiracy," and stressed that it would track down gunmen who have intimidated people and damaged public and private properties.

If anything happens it will be the Turks setting up a safe zone - Funded by Saudi - Otherwise nothing. Seizing all Syrian assets would hasten the change - Hits the middle class which is mainly on the sidelines.

EU Approves List Of 20 New Syria Sanctions Targets

BRUSSELS (Dow Jones)--The European Union has approved the list of 15 additional Syrian individuals and five new entities who will be targeted by an asset freeze, a travel and arms embargo, a person familiar with the situation said Tuesday.

The sanctions will come into effect Wednesday, when they are published in the EU's official bulletin, the official said.

The approval came after the expiry of a so-called "silent procedure" during which any EU member state is given a period of time to block the decision. No formal protest was registered.

"As part of its response to the situation in Syria, the EU has taken the lead in engaging with countries from all regions in order to convene this special session," said Catherine Ashton, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs. "The resolution adopted today has received strong cross-regional support and demonstrates the wide and unequivocal rejection of the Syrian regime's brutality against its own people."
