As early as 1947, Simon Wiesenthal began to identify escape routes used by Nazis to escape from Germany. The main route he discovered was from the small Bavarian town of Memmingen to Innsbruck, Austria. From there, it was possible to cross into Italy over the Brenner pass. Wiesenthal later learned the Nazis referred to this as the "B-B" route, from Bremen in Germany to the Italian port of Bari. He also knew that the fugitives had little or no difficulty obtaining false papers and seemed to have enough money available in their new home to establish comfortable new lives. Wiesenthal concluded a secret organization with substantial resources had to be involved in helping fugitive Nazis. The seeds of that project were planted before World War II ended.

As fiction, Frederick Forsythe's novel 'Odessa Files' and the movie based on it, with Jon Voight in the starring role, were excellent.

I think it was the History channel that ran a documentary on this the other night, Bear. From what I saw, it is certainly plausible that nazis used the Brenner pass route and that they were aided and abetted by the Catholic church. The false passports and papers were proof that some of the bastards got through.

That's the show that spawned my interest.

I've long thought that it was a very plausible operation/group. I had never actually thought the Church was involved, but their insinuation that the Church feared the rise of Communism, combined with the physical evidence involving the Church, makes their participation very plausible, if not out right fact.

I wasn't the least suprised to see the connection between the church and nazis. The Catholic church was deeply involved with the nazi party and supported them in many countries during the war. With their help, the nazis would have had all the documents they needed to slip through the Allied nets and make a break for freedom in S. America.

Between Paperclip and Odessa the Nazis never disbanded they just went underground as allies in the Cold War.

Odessa, although not actually called by that name, existed.....and was led (from Spain) by former Waffen SS Lt Colonel Otto Skorzeny........an absolutely fascinating man. Rescuer of Mussolini from his mountain prison, and commander and planner of the use of Germans in US uniforms at the Battle of the Bulge.........also trainer of the Egyptian Army (against, of course, Israel)

"Not exactly what I had in mind YJ."

Then you might have made the effort to be a little bit clearer.

Your title was:

Odessa, fact or fiction?

I responded to the 'fiction' part, also referred to in the article you linked.

If I offended you, or if my response did not measure up to your level, I humbly apologize.

It took me a minute and so rereading to get it, but I did, I think. Die Spinne?

I never realized how extensive this operation was. Something I always thought of as a sort of over blown conspiracy, seems to be quite real and a lot larger then I had originally thought.
