The Chinese just called Obama a hypocrite. The Iranians just called Obama a liar. And Castro just publicly bullied Obama. The poor man has been humiliated.

Obama thought he could reach out to the Castro's and sing Kumbiya with them.

Now they want reparations for the decades old embargo and for the U.S to turn over Guantanamo if the US wants to open up an embassy there.

Silly President... it is the embargo that keeps the Cuban Govt. in power.

EagleSmack And we're coming... and we tip! Now the Cubans will want to wait on the table with the Americans because they tip unlike the cheap Canadians. :)[/QUOTE said:
We are, if nothing else, frugal.
Friendly but frugal.
My family members went to Cuba.
Packed light for themselves.
And took the max number of suitcases full of clothes
for the hotel staff - cause they heard they were without.
And they were.
The rumour of a majority of well off Cubans is just that.

...........And they did tip. Generously.
The cheap rep was due to Mericans giving Cubans half smoked nickel cigars and being pissed
cause the Cubans did not kowtow for them.

The Mericans will never be as generous as their heads are swollen.

woops, sorry:....................................(insert cheezy smile)

It's looking like the warming of relations was just talk. I had fun in this thread but as long as the Cuban Govt. (especially the Castro Clan) wants to stay in power there will be no real relations.

Castro telling Obama if he wants an embassy in Cuba the US needs to give back GITMO and pay back 50 years worth of reparations due to the embargo is pretty much a slap.

The embargo is what keeps the government in power... lift that and open travel and the Cuban govt. is finished IMO. No more excuses to be had.

Obama is an amateur to these guys.

Watched a tv report about the old American cars still being used in Cuba. Many owners of those vehicles are polishing them up in anticipation of the day they can sell them to Yanks - a good fortune will come to each of those sellers.

They will indeed. They have 50s models in mint condition, kept up with expert and loving care. Many of those Cuban Chevys and Fords will sell for six figures, come the day.

fer darn sure

I was on a sports chat this evening and we discussed pro boxing - several fans agreed that we can hardly wait until all those Cuban boxers will enter our shores to fight professionally. Same for Cuban athletes in other sports - will be a huge bonanza for USA sports fans and for Cuba's economy.

In Meeting, Obama and Castro Signal Path to Normalization -- News from Antiwar.com

An historic meeting between President Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro appeared to go off without a hitch today, signaling progress in the ongoing efforts of the two countries toward reconciliation after over half a century of US embargo.

President Castro welcomed the announcement that the US will “quickly decide” on removing Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. The State Department has reportedly recommended the removal.

Though during the talks Castro complained about the previous US military occupation, the failed Bay of Pigs invasion, and repeated terrorist attacks launched by the US, mostly aimed at assassinating Fidel Castro, the current president insisted he doesn’t hold Obama responsible for any of this.

President Obama’s earlier policy didn’t represent a serious break from the long-standing attempt at silly dirty tricks campaigns against Cuba, including bankrolling a “Cuban Twitter” that was aimed at fueling unrest, and using an HIV prevention workshop to try to start a rebellion on the island.

Obama, for his part, described the past 50 years as a “failed policy,” and insisted that it was time to “try something new.”

Good move, indeed

U.S. Encouraging Cuba To Shift Toward Democratic System Of Corruption | The Onion - America's Finest News Source

WASHINGTON—As part of the White House’s effort to mend 50 years of acrimonious U.S.-Cuba relations, members of the Obama administration called on the island nation this week to adopt a more democratic form of corruption. “If Cuba is to thrive on the global stage, it must end its autocratic abuses of power, and hold free and fair elections to determine which officials will ultimately siphon off public resources for their own personal gain,” said Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman, who called on Cuba’s communist regime to cede some political control and let opposition parties play a greater role in its shady backroom dealings and systems of graft. “We recognize that change will not happen overnight, but by allowing influence-peddling, kickbacks, and the misappropriation of funds to be controlled by elected representatives of the people, Cuba will earn the world’s trust and respect. It’s time for Cuba to embrace the same dishonest, nominally democratic form of government that all of its neighbors have.” Sherman went on to express the administration’s hopes for a future in which Cuba will regularly conduct transparent elections bought and paid for by powerful corporate interests.

PetSmart Manager Does Morning Sweep Of Enclosures For Dead Ones Before Opening Doors For Day | The Onion - America's Finest News Source

OMAHA, NE—Calling the walkthrough among the cages and aquariums a key part of his morning routine, local PetSmart manager John Brubaker told reporters Thursday that he always does a quick sweep of the store’s enclosures for dead ones before opening up for the day. “First thing after I get in, I’ll flick the lights on, grab the wheeled garbage can, and head over to the small pet section to dispose of any guinea pigs and chinchillas,” said Brubaker, adding that his typical loop then takes him to the fish section to check for floaters that got stuck in their oxygen filters overnight. “The parakeets usually don’t take me that long—I just go through with a brush and sweep the stiff ones out of their cages real fast. Usually, I can have all the critters bagged and in the dumpster before the cashiers even start showing up.” Brubaker went on to say, however, that the sheer number of dead ones sometimes forced him to just hide a few in the backs of their cages and gather them up the following morning.

If they're stupid enough to open up the country to the Americans their revolution ist kaput!
In some ways their revolution was successful. Face it, Batista was a bastard, and the country was a hereditary oligarchy. Castro changed that, and after he and Li'l Bro shuffle off, there's a pretty good chance the Cubans can build a healthy society.''

Revolutions can be healthy. And it's a poor and rare revolution that does no good at all. But given the progress of other Caribbean and Latin American countries in the last 50 years, I wonder if it was even necessary. Could not much the same have been accomplished without a revolution?

Meh, we'll never know. Far as I'm concerned, the only significance Cuba ever had was as an aircaft carrier and missile launch platform for the Soviet Union. With the USSR gone, it's past time to regularize relations and put 'em in with all the other semi-corrupt more-or-less dictatorships south of the border.
