MF speculated on the possibility

Have you ever taken an interest in the qualifications of an electrician you've hired? The ability of a surgeon you (or family) has needed? How about the truck you bought recently, any interest into looking at the track record of the company, or was that of no interest?

What has that got to do with ANYTHING? If I was asked to lend someone lots of money, I could see wanting to know their financial, but as there is not a chance I'd lend anyone more than $50 or so I don't think I need the details of their mortgage. As for the truck I bought, I've previously owned 3 Ford pickups, Ford was recently the only one of the big 3 to remain solvent and the dealership here was est. in 1915.............oldest Ford dealership in Canada.

At the moment I have over a hundred acres in Nova Scotia, no mortgage period, I am
leaving it for my kids. That is the plan but I suppose if someone was in trouble in the
family I might help out and I might even carry a small mortgage.
It is not how many times you mortgage a property its sometimes a benefit to do that
by not touching other assets and in some cases that mortgage might make you more
money, or it might be used to pay for something unexpected.
I don't care how many times someone buys a car or truck or stereo, I don't care how
many times someone mortgages their house, it is none of my business period.

The now multiple treads on this silly topic, aside.

I'm genuinely curious about something, maybe somebody can explain it to me.

Teows private life (Albeit public record) gets displayed, it's OK, funny, and according to some, says something about the man.

Mulcair's private financing gets publicized, and it's mudslinging politics, and means nothing about him as a leader.

I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation for the appearance of inequity there, maybe one of the truly political geniuses here can explain it.

Yeah.....same with Barry & his smokes, or Bill and his Monica, or Steven
and his....whatever he does!
He freebases kittens. All the cool Hitler-esque fascists are doing it.

What I get a kick out of is the 'what me worry' mentality that is going on here. With the flock of excuses that are rolling in, you'd think that he was remortgaging the house every year to save orphans

Personally, I could care less if Mulcair has personal financial issues or what he is using the money for, but this guy has designs on running the country and if his mentality is that anytime you need money, you just toodle-on down to local shylock and arrange the cash, then I have issues.,, Problem is that Tommy is now laying with everyone's money and if he's an idiot savant in finance, then he'll do well in sticking to bankrupting himself and leaving me out of it.

Think outside the box here a bit, maybe you'll clue in

Without knowing the circumstances, I don't think passing judgment at this time is appropriate.

Sure, it's odd, but he's a politician, they're all odd.

I actually think, that unless something emerges and shows very poor financial practices, or a link to money laundering or fronting cash for Harper to buy kilo's of kittens to freebase. It's a non issue. Very much like Toews ugly divorce, or Layton getting his freak on.

But I do truly find the differences in reactions, truly interesting.

No it's not, a line of credit is cheaper, and if your going to use it as an investment, you can deduct the interest on your income tax. So it makes no sense to take out a larger mortgage unless your in financial trouble, and you can't get a line of credit..

What line of credit can you get for 21/2%?

Sure there is a possibility he has designs on running the country, but he's NOT going to be running the country.

Toew's ugly divorce, I can empathize with. The irony was his insistence there should be no secrets on the sphincternet.

Layton? Sometimes you just never know what goes on in back rooms.

Mulcair? Hell, I've got and paid off three short term bank loans in the six years I've owned this place - just based on real estate equity. Judgement by certain internet intellects means SFA ... 'cuz I doubt their normalcy too.

Harper and kittens? Any belly-button kitty dander in that Kingston painting?

A a little aside to Mulcair and finance:

Mulcair's grandfather was Mercier, Premier of Quebec shortly before WWII. Mercier transformed Canada in the way that holds it together today. He was the first Canadian politician to use the power of the purse to influence something outside his own province. Mercier gave money to Catholic schools in Ontario to help their survival.

That power of the purse is the only real power that the federal government has with which to override provinces, It is that which brought Keynesianism to Canada (Keynes is sometimes referred to as a latter day Father of Confederation since the use by the federal government began when Canada was disintegrating in the 1930s under the stress of Provincialism).

It is that power and its unifying purpose that Harper wants to do away with.

Somewhat off topic but, perhaps, Mulcair does understand a thing or two about finance and its place in the National schema.
