In fact in Canada immigrants to the Prairie provinces were deliberately settled along ethnic lines in order to set up an internal support structure for the newly arrived settlers. As a result there were concentrations of immigrants in such places as Gimli (Finns), New Norway, Bruderheim (Germans), Vegreville (Ukrainians), and so on.
In urban areas it was as you say with concentrations of Irish, Italians, Jews, Greeks, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, North American Hispanics, and so on; not to mention the Black ghettos that still exist.
