English is used in Punjab's schools. Had a couple of friends from there and that's what they told me.

I used to know German when I'd left school, but forgot most of it today. Just because you learn it doesn't mean you'll always know it. I know graduates who'd gone through French immersion and still can't speak it well, not even functional in it.

Fu ck you are dense.

I reject "races", I do NOT reject the fact that this country was founded by the French and English with England being the primary as they won the damn war. Of course the Brits would favour Brits in immigration. Considering the time, this is a fu cking surprise to you?

Defending official bilingualism does NOT give tacit approval to sweet fu ck all. This is one Country. It is made up of peoples from all over the globe. In my opinion, we should have ONE official language, not two. English only. If people want to keep the language of their ethnicity, more power to them, BUT, we can NOT run a country this size by pandering to EVERY language spoken in the 9.985 million km² that this country covers. The very idea of even attempting to do that is asinine beyond the pale.

Once again, proving your ignorance.

One official language Canada-wide?

I support that in principle, but I'll tell you this: it had better be an easy one to learn. Why? Because many would need to learn it as a second language. Contrary to your beliefs, most Quebecers aren't even funcitonal in English even after having learnt it in school. For two reasons. One, it's a difficult language to learn as the OECD report quoted above shows. And two, they don't use it locally outside of school because the entire community is French-speaking.

I've lived in central Quebec and can tell you I would not have survived without a knowledge of French.

Aren't the British and the French 'races' according to one definition of the term, at least according to the official lexicon of the B&B Commission Report?

I say Canada was founded by people, Brits and French among them.

Well, if this guy can know enough to pass a driver's licence test and read street signs, I'm sure he would know enough to understand the cops. While I am not going to bet my life on it, I am very certain that this is a matter of judicial reversible error.

Contrary to my beliefs eh. Well then, I guess I may as well just shut up since you know exactly what me "beliefs" are.

but before I go, how about you quote where I have stated that my "belief" is that all quebecers can speak and/or understand english. Show the world that I am as ignorant, or more ignorant than you are.

'...their conduct “fell below the standard of care reasonably expected of them in the circumstances,.."

Is everyone is an expert on the conduct of the police officers in this case? Obviously the judge should have referred to the judicial experts at Canadian Content before ruling on the legal conduct of the cops.

Please don't bring common sense into this thread. It was starting to get very entertaining

Again, Canada is far more than just the country's English and French regions.
A trip to the town this so called judge calls home proves that sentiment in spades, english or french seldom heard so the hard part for cops would be finding someone that speaks punjabi and english.
The judge might have had no choice in the matter. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Article 14, states:
'A party or witness in any proceedings who does not understand or speak the language
in which the proceedings are conducted or who is deaf has the right to the assistance of an
interpreter.'

If proceedings had taken place this would empower our defendants lawyer to demand a interpreter however there were no proceedings as the judge threw out the breath sample evidence. Any prosecutor worth his salt would appeal this judges loopy decision. On the news here tonight it was reported dui instances are on the increase, we need more duds like this on the bench.

He failed the breath test so he should be called to account for that.

English is the third official language in Punjab. Therefore, he had to know the language. Clearly a case of judicial error which can be appealed.

It's not a matter of being able to speak English, it's more often about making them feel powerful.

I recently accompanied my nephew when he went for his driver's test. There was a man there speaking perfect English and demanding that he have a Spanish speaking examiner. It was explained to him that there was no Spanish speaking examiner there at present and he would have to wait until they located one. The man raised quite a fuss!!

This is just one reason why the English people wanted out of the EU. They want their country to be ENGLISH again, not just language but laws, traditions and all and with established borders.

"The fact still remains that "Canada" was "founded" by the French and English."

That's what people have been brainwashed to believe for the past several generations. The truth is, Canada was settled/founded by the English after they whipped the French's asses off.
That's why there is only one French Province in Canada; Quebec is the tail wagging the dog.

Really? The English beat the French?

There is no "brainwashing", numbnuts. Lower Canada (Quebec) and Upper Canada (Ontario) were the original "provinces" in Canada. Both Upper and Lower Canada needed to "agree" on the makeup. England gave Lower Canada quite a bit, after the French loss. England knew that they needed the co operation of the people (French) of Lower Canada for the colony to work. Therefore, Canada was founded by both French and English.

Then the new Canada, unable to afford Indian wars like the ones in the US, tried a different approach: it signed treaties to disarm them and then stabbed them in the back.

Yup, and your point is? Still doesn't change the facts.

What facts? That we're officially bilingual? I've never contested that.

That's what they were teaching at school when I went back in early part of the past century. :)

I'd learnt that too plus the fact that the British have been paying for that victory ever since.

That'll teach 'em to conquer other lands that don't belong to them.

What I don't get is when many Quebecers say they want a policy of federal official unilingualism, French in Quebec and whatever other provinces want outside Québec, meanwhile many promoters of official bilingualism across Canada keep insisting that imposing French outside Québec and English in Quebec will appease Québec. In fact, Quebecers don't care about French outside of Québec. They just don't want English imposed on them in Quebec.

It would seem to me the best way to appease Quebecers would be to listen to them.

Haha! You must be young enough to be in the generation when history was rewritten. Did you ever hear of Wolfe and Montcalm? The Battle on the Plains of Abraham? The English soundly whipped the French and took control of the country. They offered the French to return to France but they wanted to stay here. France didn't want them anyway and still doesn't.
The Quebecois French have never gotten over their defeat. It has been handed down through the generations. Most of them hate the English.

The Liberals rewrite history to appease the French. Louis Riel, hanged as a traitor is now a national hero. What's that about?

Wow. There's some rewriting of history in that too. Three histories exist in Canada: the Anglophobic one, the Francophobic one, and the real one. The first two are re-writings of course. Yours seems to fall in the second category.

I gather that many posters on here would be happy if they were arrested in a foreign country where they didn't speak the language, and were not allowed an interpreter.

When my husband and I were in Switzerland we received information on what it takes to immigrate there. We were told than an immigrant has 7 years to learn the laws of the country and learn one of the 4 official languages. If they do not, after the 7 years they get sent back to the country from which they came.
I think that is more than fair and I think it should be a standard requirement here as well as in any country.
There is no sense in giving your country away like we do to all kinds of immigrants.

I also think that the biggest mistake the English made after winning Canada from the French was to give them a Province to call their own. The rest of the country has been held hostage ever since to keep French mouths shut. It costs billions of dollars to provide French language education and French language signs in Provinces where 1 to 10% of the population speaks French. Add to that the increased costs of interpreters, bi-lingual labels on manufactured products (which increases costs to the customer) and the loss of many intelligent, competent people who cannot attain any government job unless they speak both languages. Talk about a brain drain!! Any silly fool can be a high ranking politician as long as he/she speaks French.
It makes no sense at all!

Up until the 1960s there were immigrants in the community where I lived whose children started school without knowing any English. There were no 'English as a second language' classes in those days but the kids soon learned. By the time they completed elementary school, most of them were farther ahead than the kids from English families and went on in life to accomplish good lives for themselves.
It was a case of people striving harder when they have to do things for themselves. What they get for nothing is never appreciated.

Actually, England gave the French a most reasonable settlement. Had England claimed her due as a conqueror, Quebec would be speaking English and worshiping in the Church of England - as both nations have done in the past

You obviously missed my rolled eyes after my first statement

Of course I know about the French defeat. Only an idiot would not know. That still doesn't change the fact that this country was founded by both the French and the English and that we have been officially bilingual since 1972.

As for the change is Riel's status, if you don't know, or understand why, then you are a lost cause.

Who else but an A$$hole dictates what language your sign has to be written in ?

Welcome to Quebec, and the bigoted of Richmond.
