Hither and yon
The problem is, as I see it, is that every Province is out to get the most that it can out of Confederation.
Its the way our country works.

Others have already explained that Danny Williams wants the government to give Newfoundland Federally controlled offshore resource revenues and then he wants to still declare "have not status" for Newfoundland and thus extract even more money from the Fed's.

And who can blame him really?

Look at Quebec.
Every year all the taxpayers in Canada outside of Quebec pitch their dollars in a hat and that money is then given to the residents of Quebec.
And if the residents of the rest of Canada quit doing it, then it's a pretty good bet Quebec may move on without the rest of Canada.
In short we bribe them to stay.
But if your Quebecois it is, of course, a fair, honest and well deserved system.

It's the same attitude that caused the US banking system to melt down.
The gimme- gimme, I want it all, I want it now and I don't care who pays for it attitude.

But things are changing.

In Alberta the Stelmach government is doing a poor job.
They are reactive and not proactive and so far behind the curve that up is down.
The oilpatch wants no part of Alberta these days.
Everyone knows Alberta is a one trick pony and that pony is starting to founder.
Every single upgrader and refinery that was planned for Alberta has been suspended or canceled.
100's of billions in development canceled.
Roughly 40% of those billions were spent in other provinces for technology and development.
The greenies and Elizabeth can take a break now, development is over.
Alberta is going to go down the drain and fast if the economy does not turn around.
The Alberta government is already in deficit and planning on spending the rainy day fund that Klein created.
Waves of Maritimers are just starting to prepare to head back home.
And who can fault that. Who in their right mind would stay in Alberta if there was no work, no jobs?
So much for the future of that "have" Province.

Next up Ontario.
Plants closing. Manufacturing in the toilet.
Our biggest trading partner is making more protectionist noises by the day.
Rumors that GM may pull the plug on Canada completely.
And Toronto as a city is rapidly drowning in red ink and the middle class is disappearing.
Unemployment is going up so fast it's hard to keep track of.
My guess is that McGinty is not really too interested in transferring large sums of money out of Ontario and into other Premiers pockets.
So much for Ontario as the premier cash cow "have" province.

Who's left to pay for the party?
Saskatchewan?

This recession better turn around pretty quick or Canada is going to change.

Equalization payments?
From where?

Billions and billions for the First Nations?
How?

Infrastructure? The environment? Education? Health care?

Frankly I don't see much difference if the Con's or the Lib's are in power.

Either you print money and pass on debts to your children and your children's children.

Or you cut back, big time.

Might as well start with Danny.

Trex, I agree with you right up until your sentence "Might as well start with Danny". That says a mouthful right there. It goes right to the core of the problem. It's that same old Canadian attitude. It says we're suffering in mainland Canada so let's phuck over the rock. You squeeze $1.5 billion today, I shudder to think what's waiting for us tomorrow.
Newfoundland used to be a colony. One website I visited describes colonization as "a system or policy by which a dominant country maintains foreign colonies in order to exploit them economically". I grant you the economic climate in Newfoundland is far better today than those early days under Britain. But that period of our existance has left a nasty scar on our souls. Under no circumstance will we bend to the political will of those who plot to diminish our place in this country. The runt of the family is still bellowing for it's rightful place after 60 years.

You've alluded to this a number of times but have provided nothing of substance to suggest anybody is "plotting" anything. Have you ever considered you are just paranoid?
