Now look for the solution to make sure this never happens again on Canadian soil.
It will happen again, Boomer - maybe not the magnitude of this senseless heart-breaking slaughter, maybe an even greater tragedy - but it will happen. There is no way on Earth anyone can predict that at any moment a seemingly sane member of the community will suddenly and without warning decide to take the lives of others. That this individual chose the cowardly act of disguising himself as an RCMP officer only compounded an already deadly situation. No one without an underlying reason to do so, would consider an officer of the law to be a threat.

Problem is that for every shooting that is for legitimate purposes, there are 10 people that are shot, where it was not justified (accidents, gang violence, domestic violence, random shootings, etc)
Depends on which figures you read.

According to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, there are about 90,000 criminal shootings in the U.S. per year, both fatal and non-fatal.

https://lawcenter.giffords.org/facts/gun-violence-statistics/#totals

Estimates on defensive uses of guns range from 80,000 to over two million per year, according to Wikipedia.

Not that that's a perfect set of stats, mind. Coupla things:

In many surveys "defensive use" includes brandishing a gun and not firing, or firing and not hitting anybody.

In this debate, "gun violence" is often used to describe any violence involving a gun, without assessing whether or not the use is legal or legitimate.

And, of course, I am most assuredly NOT saying that a higher absolute number of legal or legitimate gun uses than illegal or illegitmate gun uses leads automatically to a conclusion that it's moral or OK, nor the obverse. In moral and social calculations, 1 does not always equal 1.

How many times are guns used to threaten people that never show up in the stats?

Tens of millions?

How does quoting the illegal use of a gun, such as gang violence or mass shootings like this one, justify more restrictions?

Only if you can effectively reduce the flow of illegal guns into your country or distribution/possession of them within your country.

None of the plans for Canada I've seen on this board would do that. Especially since y'all share a 2000+ km, mostly unguarded border with the U.S.

Wouldn't even drive the street price up much.

Jim Jefferies said "Canada should build a wall, and they should make, like, three feet high. That way when the Yanks are dying from getting their jobs back and try to crawl into Canada for health care, they won't be able to get over it."
