I don't believe dating or sex outside marriage is illegal in India. So this murder isn't an example of someone taking the law into their own hands, but an unprovoked murder.

Regarding "tribal pre-modern people that take the law into their own hands", you don't have to go far to find them. Many forum users have expressed support for crime victims taking taking the law into their own hands and even support a crime victim killing the perpetrator. It depends on the crime. Check out this thread:

But dating is against tradition in India and some parents don't want it at all. Dating hasn't been around forever.

Then how can you blame the Indian government? Do you blame the Canadian Government for that wacko that beheaded a fellow bus passenger a few years ago?

I fail to see why the UN should get involved. After all the UN did not get involved in the recent Magnota case.in Canada. The misogynistic idiot has been arrested and will be tried for murder. It appears to me that Indian law is proceeding exactly as it should. And contrary to several posts that attempt to paint Indian attitudes as similar to those of Afghanistan or Pakistan; that is not the case. Tens of millions of Indian women date freely and have as much choice in their husbands as most Western women have.

Following is an article describing some of the changing attitudes in India.

Much of rural India is still like Afghanistan and Pakistan, very traditional. In urban areas this is changing. People like this man emigrate to Canada, have kids and ship their daughters back to India to get married. Not good.
