OPP pulled over a silver sports car doing 149 kilometres in a 100-kilometre zone on Highway 11 southbound just before 6 p.m., June 23. The officer determined the driver Paul Primeau, 52, of Sudbury, was intoxicated, said Crown attorney Lyndsay Jeanes.

Later at the Bracebridge OPP detachment Primeau’s breath test revealed he had 114 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood.

At court on July 19, Primeau pleaded guilty to possession of marijuana and driving with over 80 mg. of alcohol in 100 ml. of blood. He was in custody.

“On at least seven prior occasions he posed a serious risk to members of society,” said Jeanes, referring to Primeau’s record mostly accumulated in the 1980s and 90s.

Primeau’s wife had bailed him out of jail following the incident, but surrendered her surety shortly after. Primeau’s 19-year-old son had to drive him from Sudbury to Bracebridge so he could re-enter custody.

“I was sober for 19 years and didn’t have any intention of drinking and driving,” Primeau said, adding martial issues prompted him to pick up a bottle again.

“I know I have no right to ask this of the court, but please, I beg you to have mercy on my soul.”

Judge JD Evans sentenced Primeau to four months in custody and a three-year driving prohibition.

He's sick as well as criminal. I hope that he gets some sort of treatment for his substance issues while he's a guest of Her Majesty.

The mother of my Grandson isn't even allowed to ride in a vehicle and she is on a permanent curfew of 9PM or she gets tossed into jail. Your poster child is obviously an amateur.

Yeah, it's a real conundrum but the facts are these sick people are killing innocent people. Friends of mine who are in every other way considerate, law abiding people have this single weakness. Tough thing to come to terms with. Thankfully I know no one who has killed anybody .............................................yet!

8th impaired = 4 months in jail? I hope the prosecution appeals that one.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't. Severe punishment is required for an 8th offense, but I doubt if jail is the answer. Maybe 4 months of "volunteering" at the morgue would make them take notice.

Get them as drunk as they were and then put them in a driving simulator and show them how stupid they are behind the wheel would be the best move as they would either quit drinking or quit driving.

They tried that routine here years ago. Obviously it wasn't very effective.

But an 8th offence? That should be a lifetime ban from driving. He should have been banned after the third time.
