What goes around comes around. They screwed our farmers around, so I find it hard to feel sorry for them. That spokeman they had on tv sure could spin.........

"they " not only screwed /jerked our farmers/ranchers around.....they made sure that some made mega bucks out of it too. ( Montana ....I think is the place that has been particularly nasty and adamant about keeping the ban in place.)

re: the spin. Can't stomach watching this crap anymore. It is so detached from news or reality......it is a wonder how so many Americans buy this stuff . Maybe they are used to it. or have few other options.

I think they are despertly looking for a way to link that cow to Canada so they can blame someone else for their problems in typical American fashion..........There is no excuse the border is not re opened.

of course there is no rational reason to keep the borders closed. But the current USG seems to enjoy the power thrill of jerking others around. It also has cornered the market on holding a grudge. ( a little revenge for CA not following blindly, like little sheep into a mess in Iraq ......perhaps??? ) very childish.

Hey guys some good came out of the US screwing us  Our beef processing plants are all being reopened and supplying lots of good paying jobs for Canadians :) No1 the plant in Salmon Arm put adds in our local paper for people to work there starting at 17 an hour not bad for this region 8) The US stance on this issue is costing them a lot of jobs .I'd rather see are beef processed here than there 8)

Hasn't Canada reported 3 cases of mad cow disease?

I really don't understand your sarcasms.

RE: Mad Cow D. -2nd case

The sarcasm comes because the Canadian and US herds are, for all intents and purposes, integrated and have been for decades. We've had basically the same feed rules and not only cattle, but feed, have moved back and forth across the border constantly.

Because of the nature of BSE, and because we allowed our feed practices to be dictated by a bunch of corporate morons who thought they could feed animals to herbivores, if we had BSE then you had BSE. Closing the border was unscientific, but almost bankrupted many of our farmers.

There have been more than a few stories of the US following a policy of "shoot, shovel, shut up" though. Your testing regime is highly suspect because it is dictated by the meat packers. Given the power of many of your farm lobbies (R-Calf being the worst in this case), it is also very likely that many cattle never make it even to the packers.

You miss the point, I think not. First of all the US was our biggest market. Second of all, banning beef going across the border makes as little sense as banning beef going from Alberta to Saskatchewan. Our herds are that integrated. When the border was supposed to open, R-CALF bought themselves a judge and over-rode an intternational agreement. Nice system you've got there.

There was also a lot of political pressure over the years to keep our feed rules harmonized with yours. Same with testing regimes...no testing every cow allowed.

As it stands now, we have a better chance of exporting to the rest of the world than the US does because we have increased testing and there is pressure to test every cow. The pressure from your corporations, who own the two biggest packing plants as well as the federal Conservative Party, is to keep everything the same as the US though.

Excellent points , Rev.

Who benefits the most from border "closing" ?? When the USGconsidered re-opening the borders for this..who stood in the way??? -fought against it???

(as per usual.......follow the money trail)
