A group of Asian protesters converged on Queen’s Park Sunday to demand an apology from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his handling of the hijab hoax.
The protesters say they feel insulted that a girl lied that she was assaulted by an Asian man and say Trudeau needs to make amends to their community.
“He needs to say sorry to Asian people,” said Zou Qian, one of about 30 people who showed up. “We need equality and justice.”
On Jan. 5, Khawlah Noman, 11, claimed she was attacked by an Asian man who cut her hijab with scissors while she was walking to school in Scarborough.
A police investigation determined the story was a hoax.
The story received international attention and drew outrage from Canadian politicians, including Trudeau.
“My heart goes out to Khawlah Noman following this morning’s cowardly attack on her in Toronto,” Trudeau tweeted before the hoax was uncovered.
“Canada is an open and welcoming country and incidents like this cannot be tolerated.”
Protester Bob Peng said Sunday he “condemns” Trudeau for failing to stand up for Asians.
“The day after this (hoax) happened, there was a 15-year-old boy shot in Vancouver and the Prime Minister didn’t say anything about that. I don’t understand,” Peng said.
“(Trudeau’s) behavior has hurt everyone, not just Asians. By not apologizing, it just stirs up racial tensions and hate between communities.”
