RE: Liberal Party corrupt

I do have one vote, Zeebaron. I use it to support an MP who gets elected and does an excellent job of representing me in Ottawa. He is not Liberal, nor is he a Conservative.

Was Victoria, now Ottawa
Read "On The Take". It's about the Mulroney Conservatives. They were more corrupt of any government in Canada's history. Why wasn't there a public inquirey into that? The sponsorship scandal is nothing compared to the Conservatives of the 80's. Canadians have not forgotten how he got away with it then sued Canada. Mulroney is the most hated leader, and the Conservatives are paying for it.

Don't you get it??? All parties are equally susceptible to corruption - the longer they are in power, and the less effective the opposition, the greater the corruption. If Chretien had stuck around long enough to rightfully inherit his own mess (a la Gomery), I'd say he would give Mulroney a run for his money for "most hated".

RE: Liberal Party corrupt

Chretien never would have let Gomery happen...it was a politically stupid move. He would have faced the cameras and said, "Weeeeeeelll, you know. We were trying to save the country an' we 'ad to doooo sumting. Sumtime when you do sumting, sumting alse 'appen an' you have to do sumting alse to deal wit dat sumting."

He would have won a majority in the last election and we wouldn't even be talking about this right now.

After Sheila Fraser's report I don't know if he could have avoided it. You obviously have little faith in the media - wouldn't they have dug up a lot of this information? Brault seems to want to sing like a canary!

RE: Liberal Party corrupt

Brault is trying to save his own ass...the government is suing him for $30 million.

The Auditor General's report is issued every year. This never got mentioned before, yet it's an old scandal. Do you think she just noticed now? Do you think Chretien would have ordered an enquiry?

The press would have dug up some of it, just like they did with Mulroney. Access to information doesn't cover corporate books though, and reporters are not official enquiries...people refuse to talk to them all of the time. It would be gone from the public mind by now. We wouldn't be looking at another election until 2008 or 9 either, so even if the enquiry was happening now, it would be long gone by election time.

I don't support most of what Chretien did as PM. I certainly don't support the corruption. He was a far better politician than Martin or Harper or anybody else though. He still is...think about the golf ball thing. He made Gomery look like an idiot.

He never would have allowed this to go as far as it has. That's not a good thing, but it is important to remember.
