I agree, and I disagree. From the beginning of the election on, every radio station and tv station was flooded with messages about what was needed to vote, giving people plenty of forewarning to make sure that they had the necessary paperwork. There was time to work it out with elections Canada before the election itself. I can't really anticipate what would be a better system to ensure people are only getting one vote. BUT... it does mean that people who are lacking foresight and not paying attention to the process aren't making it in to vote. And that's not cool (I guess?).

We've been going to the polls too many times over the last few years and some may have had voter burnout or just became sick of all the pol crap on the airwaves.
Every house in NB has a street number and name. Not sure about other provinces, but that's the way it is here. There are no more 'RR XX' mailing addresses, every single house in the province has a number and street name.
As for people showing up with no ID, there was enough publicity about it, I don't know why people didn't bother to pay attention.
I'd say roughly 75% of the Conservatives I know would have answered 'no' to that question too, because they were aiming for a majority government and weren't happy with a simple minority. So that stat phrased that way doesn't really say much about party affiliation.

That is huge debt to rack with in the next 1 1/2 years. I f Harper pulls that type of economics trust me Canadians will get pissed and we all know what that means.........

Well I agree that all the signs were all over the place... heck it was all over my little note in the mail I had to bring with me when I went to vote.....
But these issues were still being attempted to be corrected even before the election date, as news reports around here were talking about what college/university students should do for their situations...... I don't remember hearing of many solutions for them, and it still seems like it was a big factor on election day as reports around here said a lot of students still wern't able to vote, either because they didn't have proper documentation yet for their new location, or they couldn't make it back home to where they lived with their parents to make the vote.
Then you have the natives and those who lived on rural roads with no civic addresses as requested. I heard no solutions for them, and I was actually paying attention..... if there was a soution for them, I didn't hear about it..... and if I didn't hear about it, chances are even more people who wern't paying attention sure didn't hear about it.
I grew up on an RR#3 street...... most of where I grew up are now have street numbers and everything else required, but if I drive 5 minutes out from there, the entire area like Alma, Mt. Thom, etc. there are a lot of side roads which, if memory serves, still use RR#'s for their addresses, along with the big mail boxes at the end of the road.
This still doesn't solve the issue for reserves though.
Any place you have 911 service, you have a numbered address. The ambulance takes too long to be mailed out.
Sound's like this Economist is attributing a "potential" deficit to the global credit crunch. Seems
it was also predicted that we would already have been in a deficit though and that wasn't the
case. The hand is dealt, so lets see where it goes I guess. If it goes badly, then Canada will vote
differently in two years, or four...time will tell.

You'd think it should be easy enough to give out a voter registration card with a land location if there's no mailing address. I know my son's birth all had to be recorded by land location because I was receiving mail to a box instead of the house. Why would a birth record be easier than a voter registration?
