Keystone XL survived politics but economics could kill it

The proposed Keystone XL pipeline survived nine years of protests, lawsuits and political wrangling that saw the Obama administration reject it and President Donald Trump revive it, but now the project faces the possibility of death by economics.

Low oil prices and the high cost of extracting Canadian crude from oilsands are casting new doubts on Keystone XL as executives with the Canadian company that wants to build it face the final regulatory hurdle next week in Nebraska.

The pipeline proposed in 2008 has faced dozens of state and federal delays, many of them prompted by environmental groups who ultimately persuaded then president Barack Obama to deny federal approval in November 2015. President Donald Trump resuscitated the project in March, declaring that Calgary-based TransCanada would create "an incredible pipeline."

After all that, a TransCanada executive raised eyebrows in the energy industry last week when he suggested that the pipeline developer doesn't know whether it will move forward with the project. Paul Miller, an executive vice president who is overseeing the project, told an investor call that company officials won't decide until late November or early December whether to start construction.

"We'll make an assessment of the commercial support and the regulatory approvals at that time," Miller said in the conference call Friday with investors.

The company has invited customers to bid for long-term contracts to ship oil on the pipeline. The bidding will run through September.

An energy expert said the project has been delayed so long it may no longer make economic sense.

Actually, they don't need our oil sands anymore anyway. The US started exploiting their own in Utah under Obama. Funny how OUR oil sands were such a disgrace but apparently Obama approved oil sands in Utah are carbon-free.
That's why O'Bumwad wouldn't approve the Keystone XL, at least not the Canadian extension. Protectionism.

Flossy doesn't get it.

If KXL goes through, CDN oilsands down to the Gulf.. If it doesn't go through, more pressure on tater to to get it to the East and West coasts. Flossy is doomed either way

Feds need the cash

There is more than enough conventional heavy oil that could be fill thr pipe and use the synthetic domestically but people like flosshole don't understand that.

It's great for TV ratings..

God your stupid..

What I want is Energy East pipeline, keep the oil in Canada and refine it here for Canadians.

Nice make-work project.

Good for the economy

Who economy? The USA.

There already is a Keystone pipeline, the dotted portion is what's being protested.

Well it wouldn't be free, and I was thinking to the Irving Plant in New Brunswick that currently ships it's oil from Saudi Arabia.. and don't think they haven't been instrumental in blocking Energy East, they have billions at risk.

BC gets oil from AB SK and AK and NL by medium and supertanker. It's eco-friendly to ship from Newfoundland offshore rigs, sail through Panama and up the west coast to Burnaby or super tankered from the Arctic to Everett and crude shipped by rail and fuel by truck to Burnaby.

BC needs the trans mountain as badly as the East needs Energy East.

Independent of imports the price at the pump will plummet domestically.

But it's not exclusively Saudi, not even the majority.

But Obama

Barack Obama blocked it because he wanted a higher percentage of pipe capacity to carry Bakken kerogen and f-cked Canada and Gulf Coast refineries up the ass and proceeded with DAPL cramming it down Injun throats.
