Very peculiar disease.

Morgellons disease: Managing a mysterious skin condition

Morgellons disease is mysterious and controversial. Here you'll find answers to common questions about Morgellons disease — and suggestions for coping with it.
By Mayo Clinic Staff

Morgellons disease is an uncommon, unexplained skin disorder characterized by sores, crawling sensations on and under the skin, and fiber-like filaments emerging from the sores. It's not certain what these strings are. Some say they are wisps of cotton thread, probably coming from clothing or bandages. Others say they result from an infectious process in the skin cells. Further study is needed.
Signs and symptoms

People who have Morgellons disease report the following signs and symptoms:

  • Skin rashes or sores that can cause intense itching
  • Crawling sensations on and under the skin, often compared to insects moving, stinging or biting
  • Fibers, threads or black stringy material in and on the skin
  • Severe fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Short-term memory loss
The intense itching and open sores associated with Morgellons disease can severely interfere with a person's quality of life.
Researchers with the Centers for Disease Control note that the signs and symptoms of Morgellons disease are very similar to those of a mental illness involving false beliefs about infestation by parasites (delusional parasitosis).
How widespread is Morgellons disease?

Morgellons disease is a relatively rare condition that most frequently affects middle-aged white women. A cluster of cases occurred in California, which prompted the CDC to conduct a research study to determine if the cases were somehow related. Another study conducted in London reviewed five years of cases, from 2003 to 2008, and found 18 patients with a diagnosis of unexplained dermopathy or Morgellons. Of these, 83 percent were middle-aged women and 69 percent were white.

Joni Mitchell reportedly suffered brain aneurysm

First posted: Friday, May 29, 2015 03:51 PM EDT | Updated: Friday, May 29, 2015 03:58 PM EDT
Veteran singer Joni Mitchell has been moved to a rehab facility to further treatment for a brain aneurysm she suffered in March, according to a report.
The Both Sides Now singer has been under doctors' care at UCLA Medical Center since March 31, when she was found unconscious at her Los Angeles home.
Conflicting rumours about the nature of Mitchell's health crisis have been circulating since her hospitalization, with her representative recently dismissing rumours she is in a coma and claiming she is "alert", but a new report suggests she suffered a brain aneurysm.
According to Showbiz411.com, Mitchell has now been moved to a rehab facility, but her friend, Leslie Morris, who was granted an emergency conservatorship over the star's personal medical affairs earlier this month, is looking to have her continue her treatment at home.
The 71 year old's representative previously stated the singer is expected to make a full recovery.

She certainly had talent but was notorious for being concerned for no one but herself-solipsism isn't too strong a word-trumpeting her fringe views on medical issues showed her to be descending into senility.

David Crosby: Joni Mitchell 'not speaking'
WENN.com
First posted: Friday, June 26, 2015 06:20 PM EDT | Updated: Friday, June 26, 2015 06:34 PM EDT
Singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell is unable to speak because of an aneurysm, according to her longtime pal David Crosby.
The Both Sides Now singer was hospitalized in Los Angeles in May and now the Crosby, Stills & Nash star is speaking out about her health drama, explaining, "She took a terrible hit".
The rock veteran tells the Huffington Post, "Nobody found her for a while."
Updating fans on her current condition, he adds, "To my knowledge she is not speaking yet... She's going to have to struggle back from it the way you struggle back from a traumatic brain injury.
"She's a tough girl, and very smart. So, how much she's going to come back and when, I don't know and I'm not going to guess."
Little has been released about Mitchell's health through official channels, but days after she was hospitalized, her aides released a statement which read: "Joni remains under observation in the hospital and is resting comfortably. We are encouraged by her progress and she continues to improve and get stronger each day."
And Crosby is hopeful his friend can recover, adding, "I love her. She's probably the best of us - probably the greatest living singer/songwriter."

Joni Mitchell at home after hospital stay: David Crosby
Canadian Press
First posted: Saturday, June 27, 2015 06:30 PM EDT | Updated: Saturday, June 27, 2015 06:43 PM EDT
TORONTO -- Fellow musical artist David Crosby says in a published report that Canadian folk legend Joni Mitchell is recovering at home but that to the best of his knowledge, "she is not speaking yet."
In an interview with HuffPost Live, Crosby said it was an aneurysm that sent Mitchell to a Los Angeles hospital.
Crosby said he hasn't spoken with Mitchell.
Mitchell, 71, was hospitalized on March 31 for undisclosed reasons and the latest post on the singer's unofficial website -- on April 28 -- said she was still in the hospital and "a full recovery is expected."
An attorney told a judge in early May that Mitchell could not confer with doctors about her medical care or long-term treatment.
The assessment by attorney Alan Watenmaker compelled a judge to place the singer-songwriter's longtime friend in charge of health care decisions for Mitchell.
Superior Court Judge David S. Cunningham III appointed Leslie Morris, Mitchell's friend for more than 40 years, as the singer's conservator during a brief hearing on May 4.
In the interview, Crosby praised Mitchell by saying she is "probably the greatest living singer-songwriter -- it's either her of old weird Bob," a reference to fellow music legend Bob Dylan.
