Eyewitnesses to the Sunday evening crash that killed four pedestrians – three adults and a teen – and sent another pedestrian, a child, to hospital, spoke to The Free Press about what they saw.

London police have provided no details on the nature of the collision. The pedestrians were struck about 8:40 p.m. Sunday at Hyde Park and South Carriage roads in northwest London; a man, 20, was arrested shortly after in the parking lot of Cherryhill Village Mall, about a five-minute drive from the crash scene.

LINDSAY MARSHALL:
Marshall lives in an apartment building facing the scene of the crash. She said she was on her balcony reading a book when she heard a pickup truck “rev its engine and I looked up right at that point.”

Marshall, who has given a statement to police, said the vehicle was going south on Hyde Park Road and struck what she believed at the time was a mailbox or sign.

“The truck didn’t slow down, didn’t stop, it just kept going,” she said.

Marshall said vehicles going north on Hyde Park then began to slow down and people started to gather at the scene. A police vehicle soon arrived and Marshall described seeing a police officer performing CPR on a person.

LENA GABRIEL:
Londoner Lena Gabriel also described a horrifying scene as she and her family drove by the area on their way home Sunday night. She said they were northbound on Hyde Park when they saw the body of a person lying on the ground.

“My jaw dropped as I held my hands over my mouth,” she said. “Then a couple of metres away, there was another body, lying motionless, and then a third a few metres away from them, and then the little boy.”

She said two women were trying to help the victims.

“It was like a horror movie,” she said. “It was the worst thing I have ever seen. It’s something that you never prepare yourself to witness in your lifetime.”

Five members of the same London family were targeted – four of them killed – by a driver who struck them while they were walking in the city’s northwest end Sunday evening.

London’s police chief, Steve Williams, said Monday afternoon that investigators “believe this was an intentional act” and that “the victims of this horrific incident were targeted because of their Islamic faith.”

The attack, and the arrest, sent shockwaves across the city and beyond. It is, however, an extreme example of the violence Muslims have faced across the country. From 2015 to 2019, the National Council of Canadian Muslims tracked more than 300 incidents, including more than 30 acts of physical violence.

FULL DETAILS ON SUSPECT, MOTIVE
The most well-known was the gunman’s attack on the Islamic Cultural Centre in Quebec City during evening prayers on Jan. 29, 2017, that left six people dead and 19 seriously injured. Other attacks reported by the council include:

A massive police investigation is underway Monday after four pedestrians were killed at a northwest London intersection in one of the deadliest crashes in city history.

Emergency crews responded at 8:40 p.m. Sunday to reports of a vehicle striking pedestrians at Hyde Park and South Carriage roads, where one woman was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A man, woman and teenager were taken to the hospital and later died. A second child, nine years old, remains in hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries, police said.

A man, 20, was later arrested outside Cherryhill Mall, police said. A single police cruiser was parked outside the Oxford Street mall Monday morning, where yellow police tape cordoned off a small section of the parking lot.

PEDESTRIAN CRASH: EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS
The suspect, whose name hasn’t been released, was scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon. No charges had been laid in the case as of Monday morning.

At the scene of the crash, dozens of police officers – both uniformed and detectives – assembled and a mobile command centre was set up in a nearby parking lot. The major crimes and traffic management units are leading the probe.

Investigators flew a drone over the intersection, where there was no visible sign of the crash except for police pylons placed on the ground of the southwest corner. Eleven police officers formed a line and slowly walked in unison through the scene, scouring the ground for evidence.

Police have released few details about the crash or the victims – their names, ages and relationship to each other remain unknown – but said a press conference will likely be held later Monday.

“The direction of travel hasn’t been released at this time,” Const. Sandasha Bough said when asked about the vehicle involved in the fatal crash.

One woman at a nearby house said she often walks her two-year-old grandson on Hyde Park Road, leaving her rattled by the crash.

The area of the crash is a unique spot – filled with big-box stores and strip malls along the four-lane Hyde Park Road. It’s a bustling shopping node, but with high-density residential neighbourhoods around it. It’s also filled with undeveloped parcels of land. People out for walks or runs are common along the major north-south Hyde Park Road.

The intersection where the crash happened – Hyde Park and South Carriage – is a good example. The intersection includes a popular hardware store with condo towers behind it; townhouses across the road; and some empty plots nearby.

(Ed. note: this map shows the location of the crash, and the location of the suspect’s arrest):

The deaths have shaken the city, even as details remain unclear, and made headlines provincewide. “My thoughts are with those who were taken from their loved ones too soon,” London North Centre Liberal MP Peter Fragiskatos wrote on social media. “Rest in peace and may God give strength to the family and friends of the victims.”

Mayor Ed Holder called the deaths “an unspeakable tragedy.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the London police at (519) 661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

MANDEL: Dying Hamilton teen deserved much more from paramedics

He couldn’t breathe.

Suffering a fatal gunshot wound to his stomach for coming to the aid of an elderly man, Yosif Al-Hasnawi’s only chance of survival lay with two Hamilton paramedics.

How cavalierly they squandered that responsibility.

Christopher Marchant and Steve Snively treated the 19-year-old Good Samaritan with neglect and disdain. Instead of the required “load and go” to the nearest trauma hospital just five minutes away, they took a leisurely 23 minutes before finally taking him — to a psychiatric hospital, in restraints.

He deserved so much more.

Now the former paramedics — fired in 2018 — have been convicted of failing to provide the necessaries of life in the Dec. 2, 2017 death of the first-year Brock University student who hoped to be a doctor.

“The accused gave no plausible explanation as to why they concluded this was a psychiatric issue other than Yosif’s altered state and their belief this was a superficial wound caused by a BB gun while the facts before them dictated
otherwise,” said Superior Court Justice Harrison Arrell.

While they concluded Al-Hasnawi wasn’t suffering from a penetrating wound, he was dying of internal bleeding from a .22-calibre hollow-point bullet.

Al-Hasnawi “told the accused in English he could not breath; they had several witnesses telling them Yosif needed immediate hospital care and could not breathe,” Arrell said in his ruling. “They had no evidence to disregard the protocols that this was a worst-case scenario of a penetrating wound requiring an immediate load and go to a trauma hospital.”

The young man was at evening prayers at the Main Street East mosque with his father and brothers when he went outside for a break. When he spotted two men harassing an elderly victim across the street, he shouted at them to leave him alone.

For stepping in, one of the men sucker-punched Al-Haswani in the head and ran off. The teen gave chase but was then stopped in his tracks by a bullet to his stomach.

The admitted killer was acquitted of second-degree murder after he claimed self-defence. That verdict is now under appeal.

“To say this is a tragic case would be a gross understatement. A young and promising life was snuffed out because he was attempting to be a Good Samaritan,” Arrell said in his judgment.

But the paramedics dispatched to save him must also bear some responsibility for his death.

Was it some kind of racial profiling that rendered Marchant, 33, and Snively, 55, so unconcerned with their patient? Or did they throw their training to the wind because bystanders had mentioned a BB gun, and they became convinced Al-Hasnawi was faking?

Whatever the reason, there was no urgency in their care of the dying teen. Instead, witnesses said the paramedics even mocked Al-Hasnawi and accused him of giving an Oscar-worthy performance.

When they finally got around to moving him to the ambulance, the judge found they made several attempts using inappropriate and dangerous methods to lift him, including trying to yank him to his feet and walk him to the stretcher rather than using a backboard.

“I conclude these failures by the accused were not simple inadvertence, thoughtlessness or simple error in judgment but instead was a conscious decision to ignore the obvious evidence before them, their training, and the standards they were familiar with,” Arrell said.

“As a result of the failure of the accused to recognize the serious nature of Yosif’s injury and immediately transport him to a trauma hospital, (it) was objectively and reasonably foreseeable that they were risking his life or would likely cause permanent endangerment of his health.”

A sentencing hearing for Marchant and Snively is scheduled for October. The men could each face up to five years in prison.

Any religion that puts god above man is a false religion that is based on the supernatural and fantasy.

We have created all of our gods and should take the credit, or blame, for the genocidal homophobic and misogynous a hole gods that misguided believers adore.

Islam put's god above man and is this a garbage religion.

'Like a horror movie'

We hate to see inquisitors and jihadists at work, yet the religious create them.

Christians and Muslims are currently doing a low key inquisition and jihad against women and gays thanks to their homophobic and misogynous teachings.

Strange that in the progressive countries, laws demand equality fore all.

I see teachings against that as the religions being traitors to their nations.

The law of the land is superior law, yet the religious teach their garbage as superior.

Nice that modernization is killing those immoral religions off.

Good riddance.
