I've just received a call from my Credit Card Company (Taking into account that I'm in the UK and we have moved a majority of our call centres ( centers ) to India).

But (and get this ) I had to correct the girl's ENGLISH as she was trying to sell me additonal insurance on my card WTF!

Bless her ( obviously not her fault ) but,, I was "do you mean this" "do you mean that" " The K in Knowledge is silent my dear" " you pronounce that..."

Now I'm all up for enterprise, but, MBNA don't cut corners I'm a customer not your personal interpreter!!!!

And people want to know why I want to move out of this country??

Sorry rant over, anybody got any similar experiences?

Interesting. May have been a scam? Did they get any personal info out of you?

I worked for Esso (Imperial Oil) for over 26 years - unless they have farmed it out, the Customer Service Centre is in Moncton....

The people calling you are not actually MBNA, but a 3rd party marketing company. You can tell them to f-off all you want and they will still call (I know this from firsthand experience). Call the MBNA number on the back of your card. Tell the MBNA rep that you do not wish to recieve any more 3rd party marketing calls and to get you removed from the list or else you will be cancelling your card. I got calls for ~2 years (telling them to f-off, or just hanging up every time), but it didn't stop. After I called MBNA directly, I never got a call again (~3 years and running now).

Another interesting point about MBNA cards: since MBNA is a US bank, you cannot use their cards in Cuba, North Korea, and Libya, among other places.

Travellers beware.

RE: Is this happening in

Many call centres have moved "off shore".
In India, the employees must first speak English, and then are trained in various inflections...i.e.if the call is from the southern U.S.,those employees have a "hint" of "southern" in their voice.
Many major companies are using off shore call and answer centers.

I refuse to speak to anyone who calls me on the phone about any of my accounts. I have no way of verifying that they work for so and so. So I tell them to write me a letter. I haven't received any yet and I've been saying that for about 5 years now. Scary huh!

In Canada and the U.S., you can ask to be taken off the calling list. It's now a legal requirement that calling centres comply. In the U.S., there's a national do not call registry that you can sign up for, and once you've done that nobody will call you (and if they do, they can get fined up to $11, 000 U.S., I think). Unfortunately, many outbound calling centres require their agents to continue attempting to get the sale no matter how many times you say no, so it's best to just tell them to take you off their list and hang up. It saves us and the agent from the hassle of a conversation even the agent isn't interested in.

I don't think too many Canadian companies are outsourced. Mostly the American companies have done it, and where you have a case where the American call centre was the one we call from Canada, then it may be outsourced. Generally, the difference between the Canadian dollar and the American dollar has made it financially viable to keep these companies onshore in Canada.

When I was working in the US I had a sprint cell phone. I can tell you that if i ever had to talk to sprint I had to call 10 times just to get a person who spoke english. It was soo frustrating I mean before you talk to them there is an english recording saying that this call is being recorded for quality purposes, lol. Then you get a person who can't speak english. It seems they have a list of steps to go through and if you ask a question of bypass anything then its hopeless.
Funny thing was once I got a guy who was from Canada. He had the silly newfie accent but he said he was in Ontario.

RE: Is this happening in

I use the call display feature and don't answer calls from numbers I don't recognize. I also have the feature that keeps blocked numbers from being able to call.

I figure if it's important they'll leave a message on my answering machine. If they don't leave a message it wasn't important enough for me to have answered it.

Interesting ... why would that be a factor? Unless to visit family, who in their right mind would visit a communist country to begin with?

Well Nascar, some Canadians go to Korea to teach..it's good money, cuban cigars and Rum are delectable and relatively cheap if in Cuba, and none of these nations seem to have a beef with Canada, so Why not go :p ? At least you are guaranteed a vacation away from the pompous and arrogant-type Americans

Better than the "do not call registry", you can get a unidentified block feature for your phone. Here it's *77. By punching in *77, anyone calling you up must idenify their number so it is visible on your call display, otherwise their call will not get through and they will hear a message that "the party you are trying to reach does not accept blocked numbers".

You must be referring to South Korea, Manda which isn't a Communist country. I highly doubt Canada has any kind of diplomatic relations with North Korea. I know the US doesn't.
