A green plush lawn is really nice but in most cases not practical considering the amount of watering it takes- but don't despair, it is next to impossible to kill grass, it can be brown all summer long but when the autumn rains return, it's green again in a matter of days.

A plush lawn will reduce your AC bill by 20%

Speaking of Beetle kill, is it still pretty bad out in BC this year? Last year when i was in Merrit, the whole forest was a tinder box, except for the spruce trees by the creeks lol.....

Duncan is here on the Island Les. We had a dry year. Our lawns have basically died and we are working hard to bring them back to life. We have huge bare spots all over the place. They did not winter well. Added to that we had a cooler than normal Spring so everything is late this year. Okanagan lawns are only brown for people who are too lazy to water them.
I just finished (in the half hour)putting in my bedding plants. Normally they would have been in a month ago at least.

In Nanaimo we are on a water meter so we don't go crazy watering lawns. We plan on replanting our front lawn probably next Spring. We will likely apply about 6 inches of good topsoil and an in-ground irrigation system so the lawn doesn't brown out in the Summer.
We only grow herbs like parsely, basil, oregano, tyme, chives, and a few others. We put our herbs in the ground a month ago and the basil had to be re-planted because the frost nipped it.
Here is a small part of our front garden:
