That's an issue i have with a literal interpretation of the Bible. When god created the earth in six days, since a day is defined by the rotation of the planet on its axis, which planetary day was he referring to if we take the Bible literally?

And a "year" is 248 years on Pluto. Can we assume he also built Pluto?

Buffalo billboard petitions president for "a freakin' job"

"I need a freakin' job." That's the message President Obama saw as he arrived in Buffalo, N.Y., this afternoon for an event talking up the administration's success in creating new jobs. He also pitched Congress on approving a $30 billion credit for small-business growth.

It seems some Americans need to learn patience. There is only so much a government leader, or a private sector leader, or anybody can do to fight unemployment. There is kind of a natural disaster aspect to recessions where people just have to ride it out.

An irony about this is that Obama was upfront about this all along. In case we forget, Obama's inaguration speech, at the summit of US job lossesin Januray 2009, was kind of a downer, explaining how long this would take.

This reminds me of a joke:

So this guy is talking to God and asks, "God, what does 100 million years seem like to you?"

God answered, " One hundred million years ? That's like a second to me."

Then the man asks, "God, what's 100 million dollars seem like to you?"

One hundred million dollars? It seems like a penny to me."

So the guy says, "God, could you give me a penny?"

And God answers, "Sure. Just a second."

So who's winning the discussion. Is Obama the worst president ever?

According to Republicans, yes. But then ask them, does that mean that Carter was better than Obama or that Clinton was better than Obama, they cannot answer that. To say anything at all about a Democratic president that is not totally unflattering is anathema to them.

Incidentally, the same goes for Republican presidents. Thus, many republicans will say enthusiastically that Bush was the best president ever. Ask them, does that mean that Reagan (or 1st Bush, or Nixon or anybody) was worse than Bush, they cannot answer that. To them saying anything about a Republican president that is not totally flattering is unthinkable.

So yes, according to Republicans, Obama is the worst president ever. But so was Carter, so was Clinton, so was Kennedy, so was FDR and so on.

I have a serious question. How can cosmologists say they universe is certain amount of years ago? A year is the time a planet takes to revolve around the sun. If there's no sun, how can something be measured in years?

Year is just a convenient measure, Icarus. It may be defined in reference to earth, but once the definition is done, it is just a time unit and nothing more.

Thus, I can see people going to another star and still use earth year as the measure of time. In Asimov’s Foundation trilogy, they had a standard year; nobody knew where it came from. But that was the original earth year. Earth had been lost in the mists of time, and nobody knew which planet mankind originated. But the ‘standard year’ was still used as the standard measure.

Indeed, one could talk of earth year long after earth is gone. Earth year is defined so many seconds, and we don’t need planet earth any more to define a second.

Oh, I'm sorry. Was that off topic? I thought we were talking cosmology.

It is not off topic, we can easily connect cosmology to this thread. according to Republicans, Obama is not only the worst president we have ever had, but the worst one we are ever likely to have in times to come, indeed the worst in the entire cosmos.

Try telling that to the people who are unemployed. Many have advanced degrees and have to be retrained. Most still have family's to feed. No, trillions of dollars have been put in the economy and have yet to produce the jobs promised. Those jobs that are becoming available mostly come from American ingenuity and enterprise rising to the occasion. He may have said wait, but we do not want to.

Well they should wait. Obama wasn't even saying that people should wait until he puts his own plan into place. Rather, he was more stating a fact: There's a limit to what anybody can do about unemployment and people just have to ride it out somewhat.

That's not to say that one is uncaring to people unemployed. There is a safety net for those.

I could get picky and say that trillions of dollars HAVE NOT been put into the economy yet because the stimulus package, the main economic law of Obama's tenure, hasn't been spending money all that long. The spending in it was set up to last over a period of several years. As far as I can see, there is that much discrepency between what Obama promised on the job front and what is happening now.

Exactly, there is a big discrepancy with the money actually handed out and what actually started old or new jobs up.

"Except science blows you out of the water in every single area of faith."

There was a time when the most up-to-date 'science' declared that the Earth was flat.

There was a time when the state-of-the art 'science' was sure that there are four elements.

Or the time when the most modern 'scientists' tried to use the Philosphers Stone to convert lead to gold.

Or the time when the best educated 'scientists' believed in phlogiston.

Science of today may be the junk of tomorrow.

"The problem is many of them are not content with that, they want their theology made into the law."

How about atheists pulling out all stops to make their idealogy the law?

Such as banning school prayers, in spite the fact that roughly 80% of the population has no problem with it?

How about the atheists sparing no effort of banning Christmas?

Or how about the atheists who removed a cross in the Mojave Desert which was erected in memory and honour of those who made the ultimate sacrifice so athiests could spew their hatred?

You have a point there for sure Y.J.- makes me think of something I saw on the news last night- most young Canadians today don't even know the lyrics of our Canadian anthem.
