Police in Florida mistook Brian Laundrie’s mother for him while surveilling the family’s home after the disappearance of his fiancee, Gabby Petito, an agency spokesman said Monday, acknowledging a misstep in the investigation days after Laundrie’s remains were found.

Josh Taylor, a spokesman for the police department in North Port, Fla., told WINK News that investigators monitoring the home confused a baseball cap-wearing Roberta Laundrie for her 23-year-old son, he said.

“They’re kind of built similarly,” Taylor told the television station. He added: “No case is perfect.”

Skeletal remains identified as Laundrie’s were found Oct. 20 in Florida’s Carlton Reserve, marking the end of a month-long manhunt. His parents reported him missing Sept. 17, after he was named a person of interest in his fiancee’s disappearance but before her body was found last month.

No one has been charged in Petito’s death, which was ruled a homicide by strangulation. Laundrie was separately indicted by a grand jury on charges related to his activities following his fiancee’s death. It is unclear how the investigation will proceed after his remains were found at Carlton Reserve, a roughly 25,000-acre wetlands area in Sarasota County.

Taylor did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.

The mid-September revelation that Laundrie was also missing added another twist to a case that captured widespread public interest – and raised questions about how he slipped away on law enforcement’s watch.

Taylor told WINK that North Port police began watching the Laundrie home after Petito’s family reported her missing Sept. 11. Days earlier, Laundrie had returned from the couple’s cross-country road trip without her.

Laundrie refused to speak to police, but authorities kept watch via cameras, according to WINK. On Sept. 13, investigators saw him drive away in his Mustang, the station reported. Two days later, the Mustang returned, and police “thought that we had seen Brian come back into the home,” Taylor said.

With public pressure mounting, North Port Police Chief Todd Garrison insisted during a Sept. 16 news conference that officers knew Laundrie’s whereabouts.

“All I’m going to say is we know where Brian Laundrie is at,” he said.

When his parents reported him missing the next day, Taylor said, “that was certainly news to us.” He said he now believes the person they saw leaving the car in a baseball cap was Roberta Laundrie.

“They had returned from the park with that Mustang,” Taylor told WINK. “So who does that? Right? Like, if you think your son’s missing since Tuesday, you’re going to bring his car back to the home – so, it didn’t make sense that anyone would do that if he wasn’t there. So, the individual getting out with a baseball cap we thought was Brian.”

The couple had embarked on a trip through national parks in a converted van, documenting their travels through rosy photos posted to social media. But a different side of the relationship emerged during the investigation into Petito’s disappearance, including an Aug. 12 encounter with police following an altercation between the two in Moab, Utah. Two weeks later, Laundrie returned to his parents’ home alone.

Laundrie was the lone person of interest in the killing of 22-year-old Petito, whose body was discovered Sept. 19 in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park.

After skeletal remains were discovered in Carlton Reserve, investigators confirmed to Laundrie’s parents that they belonged to their son, Steve Bertolino, the family’s attorney, told The Washington Post shortly after investigators were seen visiting their home in Sarasota, Fla.

“We have no further comment at this time, and we ask that you respect the Laundries’ privacy at this time,” Bertolino said last week.

An initial autopsy of Laundrie’s remains did not uncover his cause of death, the Associated Press reported Monday. Further examinations are expected to be conducted. Authorities have not released details about what was inside a notebook and backpack found with the remains.

Whoops.

The Florida police chief whose service was supposed to be watching Brian Laundrie — who famously slipped through their fingers — blamed “human error” as the culprit.

North Port Police Chief Todd Garrison also said Laundrie likely killed himself in the alligator-infested Florida conservation area where he was found dead in October.

Laundrie, 23, was described as a person of interest in the disappearance and eventual murder of his girlfriend Gabby Petito, 22. But on Sept. 15, cops watching the Laundrie home thought he was slipping out but in reality, it was his mother.

“As a leader, what do I do?” Garrison said.

“No, people want open transparency and honesty from their law enforcement officials.”

He added: “Yes, we made a mistake. It was human error, but I still stand behind my team.”

However, Garrison told members of the South County Tiger Bay Club the screw-up had no impact on the outcome of the investigation.

“Now we know that, by the time we became the lead agency, Brian had already left the house and presumably had already been deceased out in the Carlton Reserve,” he said.

Petito was reported missing by her mother on Sept. 11.

Laundrie had already returned home from the couple’s cross-country van trip 10 days earlier.

The Long Island native’s body was found on Sept. 19 in a Wyoming campground. Laundrie’s body was found on Oct. 21 and so far cops are not saying how he died.

Sarasota County Sheriff Kurt Hoffman, who took part in the manhunt, said Laundrie was likely dead soon after he vanished.

“That guy went out there and by all accounts probably committed suicide and he was right out there where we thought he was,” Hoffman said.

“There was four feet of water out there at the time.”

Laundrie, who gained notoriety by being named the sole suspect in the death of his fiancee Gabby Petito, with a manhunt following, was found dead on Oct. 20 in Carlton Reserve near North Port, Fla.

Steve Bertolino, a lawyer for the Laundries, told multiple U.S. outlets, including the New York Post , that the family was told Laundrie had died via a gunshot.

“Chris and Roberta Laundrie have been informed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was suicide,” Bertolino told The Post. “Chris and Roberta are still mourning the loss of their son and are hopeful that these findings bring closure to both families.”

A forensic anthropologist determined the cause of death to be suicide.

It took time to find the remains of Laundrie, 23, because police said they were submerged in a marsh.

Petito, 22, had gone missing on Sept. 1 when Laundrie returned from a trip the pair had been taking together.

Her death was ruled a homicide by strangulation.

Brian Laundrie may have killed himself with a gun he took from his parents’ house, though up until now, details of the missing gun was kept under wraps.

Laundrie’s family attorney, Steven Bertolino, told CNN that Chris and Roberta Laundrie voluntarily surrendered their firearms to police on Sept. 17 – the day their son went missing.

They realized one handgun was missing and informed authorities, but according to Bertolino, he and law enforcement agreed it was in the public’s best interest not to reveal that particular tidbit.

“Imagine, with the frenzied atmosphere at the time, if the public thought Brian had a gun,” Bertolino told the news network. “I cannot speak to why (law enforcement) did not reveal the info, but we spoke about it at the time and I believe they felt as I did.”

However, one could argue that with Laundrie missing and allegedly on the run, shouldn’t a warning have been issued stating he was armed and dangerous?

Mom of Gabby Petito killer Brian Laundrie 'offered to assist him': Lawyer
"It's a pretty interesting, pretty odd letter."

Author of the article:Brad Hunter
Publishing date:Jun 27, 2022 • 16 hours ago • 1 minute read • Join the conversation

Legal eagles are turning up the heat on the family of Gabby Petito’s boyfriend, who murdered the vlogger while on a cross-country adventure last year.

Lawyer Patrick Riley is claiming that Brian Laundrie’s mom, Roberta, wrote the troubled killer where she “offered to assist him.”

Riley is repping Petito’s family in their civil suit against Laundrie’s parents.

“Within that letter is an offer from Roberta Laundrie to assist her son,” Riley told News Nation. “It’s a pretty interesting, pretty odd letter.”

The pretty New Yorker’s parents filed the suit against the Laundries, accusing them of hiding their son and conspiring to help him cover up the murder.

The letter was discovered in Petito’s van.

Roberta Laundrie added in the letter: “Burn after you read this.”

Riley said the letter could prove his case against the Laundries.

“There’s no date on the letter but it appears to have been written between the time that Gabby was murdered and Brian committed suicide,” Riley said.

“There are scenarios presented by Roberta, for example, ‘If you go to jail, I’ll bake a cake and put a knife in it or saw in it.'”

The lawyer said the letter is part of evidence gathered by the FBI who are still investigating Petito’s slaying.

“My understanding is that the letter at one point had been in the van, but then it was taken from the Laundrie home during the time when the search warrant was executed,” Riley said.

The young couple had embarked on their trip around the U.S. in June 2021. Petito had plans to chronicle the adventure.

But in September, she was reported missing and her body was discovered on Sept. 19, 2021 near Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park. She had been strangled and investigators determined she had died three weeks before.

Laundrie went on the run.

In October, his body was found in a Florida conservation area with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He left behind a confessional letter.

Shocking new photo shows Gabby Petito with blood on face
Author of the article:Brad Hunter

Lawyers for the family of murdered vlogger Gabby Petito released this photo on Tuesday showing her injuries following a domestic dispute. MOAB POLICE
Lawyers for the family of murdered vlogger Gabby Petito released this photo on Tuesday showing her injuries following a domestic dispute. MOAB POLICE
The lawyers for the family of murdered Gabby Petito have released a shocking new photo showing the vlogger with blood smeared across her face.

The photo stems from a domestic incident and was taken just weeks before she was murdered by her fiance Brian Laundrie.

Petito and Laundrie were on a cross-country trip in a van and the 22-year-old Long Island native was recording their adventures.

But in the selfie released Tuesday, Petito has blood over her left eye and nose. The photo was taken in Moab, Utah, on Aug. 12, 2021, while she was being questioned by local cops responding to a 911 call regarding a domestic incident.

Weeks later she was dead.

Police later conceded that officers made “unintentional mistakes” while questioning a clearly distraught Petito near Arches National Park. But instead of separating the pair, the local cops let them leave without pursuing any charges.

It’s believed that Petito was bludgeoned and strangled to death by Laundrie on Aug. 28, 2021. Her remains were later discovered buried in a shallow grave in a Wyoming national park.

Her disappearance triggered a massive manhunt.

Meanwhile, Laundrie fled in the van to his parents’ home in North Port, Fla. He too disappeared and was found in a local swamp with a gunshot wound to the head.

Laundrie left behind a letter confessing to the murder, cops said.

After his suicide, it emerged that Laundrie was abusive and violent. Petito’s jolly video diary concealed her torment.

Now, Petito’s grief-stricken parents are suing Laundrie’s parents as well as Moab City Police. They believe the killer’s family kept details secret about Gabby’s death.

She last spoke to her family on Aug. 25, 2021. Her van was spotted near Grand Teton National Park just two days later.

Petito was reported missing on Sept. 11, and Laundrie was named by cops as a person of interest several days later.
