The President of the Republic of Ireland Catherine Connolly is on a three day official visit to her country's much larger next door neighbour the United Kingdom.

Upon arriving the Irish Head of State met the British Head of State King Charles III at Buckingham Parliament and invited him to a State Visit to the Republic of Ireland next year.

It will be the first State Visit by a British monarch to the Irish Republic since that of Queen Elizabeth II in 2011.

After decades of conflict and bloodshed over Northern Ireland, the two countries that border each other are now firm friends.

Speaking in English and Irish, the Irish President Catherine Connolly made a powerful speech at the Irish Embassy.

She said "England is our nearest neighbour" (in which she should have said the United Kingdom) and after centuries of warfare the two countries - UK and Republic of Ireland - are now great friends and she mentioned the powerful family links between the two neighbours. Being next door neighbours, there are a lot of Brits who have Irish ancestry and a lot of Irish who have British ancestry.

Of course there is a lot of friendly banter between the British and Irish and the English and Irish are big rivals on the rugby pitches, but in more important matters the two nations are now close allies.

Connolly then went on to invite King Charles III and Queen Camilla to a State Visit to Ireland in 2027.

Between 1801 and 1922 what is now the Republic of Ireland was part of the UK, but it seceded from the Union in 1922.

During her speech, the Irish President Catherine Connolly said the King's State Visit to her country next year will further deepen the relationship between Ireland and Britain as neighbours and friends and the work going on between the Irish PM (Toiseach) and British PM, but the Head of State of the small country of 5 million went on to attack powerful countries such as Britain and America who transgress international law for their own benefit.
