They all were and still are shipping seeds to the US, just as he was?

That would certainly change things, it would indicate he should have stayed out of the spotlight with those fat joints (he should have been made to smoke every bit of everyone he lit up BTW)
Yes. Before and after Emery was busted. I'd wager my left nut that 50% of mail going to the USA from NL are packages of pot seeds. How many Dutch companies have been busted by US DEA?

Why not makes yourself some extra loot and get some tasmanian poppy seeds. If NATO can sell heroin why can't you?

That might a fine line if no money was exchanging hands. He was knowingly helping an American do something that was illegal. Are you saying a person in Mexico that helps somebody pack a bag full of coke would not be considered to be a smuggler?

When did American law become international law?

If someone is packing a bag full of coke in Mexico for shipment to the US, then yes they are breaking the law... a Mexican law, not an American one. Their treatment should be as per the Mexican criminal justice system, not the American one.

If a Canadian is selling marijuana seeds in Canada, then Canadian law applies, not US law. It is legal to export seeds from Canada. Its illegal to import marijuana seeds in the US.

However Emery had to declare clearly the contents of all shipments outside of Canada. If he broke that Canadian law, then he should be arrested, as per Canadian law, not American law. What American laws Emery violated while in Canada are beside the point.... until Emery enters the US.

If the seeds were clearly marked as per Canadian law, then US officials should have no problem intercepting the seeds and busting someone in the US for breaking American law.

The real issue here isn't Emery's legal Canadian business, but Emery's legal marijuana activism. Powerful people in the US don't want marijuana decriminalized. Instead they would rather maintain their war on drug addicts, which keeps them employed. The current laws allows them to seize and auction off personal property and fill their "for profit" jails. They have a profit incentive to keep the current laws in place. IMO, the criminal justice system should be driven by the public interest, not profit..

Some of these powerful people who support the war on drug addicts are Canadians like Harper. The conservatives have big plans to build jails and fill them with drug addicts, just like the US. IMO, drug addiction should be treated as a medical mental health problem. Drug addiction is a disease. Making it a crime is counter productive. Its expensive and ineffective to lock up drug addicts. Drug addiction can be treated far more effectively and less expensively with medical treatment and counseling.

The real story here is that Emery's opponents couldn't bust him for breaking Canadian law, so they busted him for breaking American law.... while in Canada... and Canadian authorities under the Harper government cooperated with that miscarriage of justice.

Canadians should have a problem with the Harper government recognizing US legal jurisdiction in Canada. In a nutshell, this case tells you where the Harper government would lead Canada if they had a majority.... If you want Canada to become more like the US, then vote for Harper. Better yet move to the US, where you'll be happier.

Personally I love Canada the way it is. I don't want Canada to become more like the US. If anything, I'd rather see Canada become more like Europe and our relationship with the US to be based on equality, not subservience.

Apparently 'they' don't like competition, isn't that the first rule of any business, know your competition.

So you agree that the govt is guilty of smuggling raw goods yet someone selling seeds get extradited and 5 years in the hoosegow.

Who went to jail over Iran/Contra?

He never broke a Canadian law that paralells US law. That is the "gray" area and miscarriage of justice.
That's an opinion.

Look, you know I don't have an issue with pot. But it isn't as if US law enforcement waltzed into Canada and scooped him up. There was a hearing, where his lawyer had the opportunity to fight extradition. A Judge, not the Gov't, found in favour of US law enforcement.

Barring the introduction of any evidence of Gov't influence, any opinion offered, in an attempt to impeach the Gov't, is simply nonsense.

And lets not forget, he plead guilty to the offence.

Now that the US has him, the're going to keep him.
He gave the US police to much trouble to let him go now that they have him where they want him.

That is how they protect their business, most 'transgressors' (to Mena sized operations)get a bullet to the back of the head and that's that.

Plea bargains to avoid 10 year to life sentences are a bitch.
I've faced longer sentences. Thankfully I had a good lawyer and no need to be scared.

But isn't he an activist? Wouldn't a lengthy sentence be tantamount to martyrdom?

petros, I don't like it any better than you do. But if you poke the wrong critter, you have to expect some form of reaction. He poked, they reacted.

That is how many consider it.

Yeah he poked all right but that poking set off a chain reaction that is still uncontrollable regardless of how much money or manpower is tossed at it.

What a waste.

I agree, it's a terrible waste of money, chasing dope peddlers.

That's what he wants. It is martyrdom in a way.
Then there really isn't any injustice is there?

He got exactly what he wanted.

I smoke plenty but haven't been to a peddler in 10 years.
Then add growers.

I disagree with pot laws in this country. I can't dictate what they are, any more than I can dictate what the US's pot laws are. Blaming the Conservatives, is ridiculous. The Liberals had more of an opportunity to make pot completely legal. They chose not too.

What I can do, is watch my ass and be smart about how much and where, I grow my crops. If I still did. Thanx to the cottage next door being sold, I've lost all my privacy, until I put in a new fence.
