I agree with you Reverend it is hard on the dogs, so why do the owners put their animals in such situations.

My aunt knew my parents feelings regarding animals in the house, so why did she bring them knowing there was going to be a conflict.

She knew it was family gathering and wanted to stress the point that her dogs were her family, problem was they weren't part of the larger family.

BTW, I also had an uncle you was completely nuts and had some turkeys as pets, and yes, he allowed to live in his home. These things were huge, as large as a 6 year old child. Would you have allowed them to run free in your home??

I've had many discussions with people who regard their pets as equal to humans. To these I ask the same question, "A train is coming, on the track lay a 3 year old child, a stranger to you, and your 10 year old cat/dog/ferret/... you only have time to save one of them. Which do you save??"

Most people will admit that they will save the 3 year old stranger because the child is human and the pet isn't. The remainder of the people refuse to answer because they don't think it makes them look good.

RE: Human / animal Hybrid

It could be the same reason I take my dogs to my father's every year, tibear. If they want me there, then they want my dogs too. It's a package deal.

Reverend,

You didn't answer whether you would let my uncles turkeys in your home?? Or which of the child or your dog would you save??

I'll answer the question about who to save.

I'd save the 3 yr old. Why not the cat/dog? because it's smart enough to get itself of the tracks.

I tend to equate equal value between humans and animals. I've also eaten my pet goats (neutered not purebread males). I see no conflict with making sure the animals life was as happy, and pleasant as can be before becoming dinner. Death does not have to be painful or frightening for the animal.

I see no conflict with treating animals with respect, be they pets or food . I do see conflict with treating some people with respect......or even equal rights. Some people give the word "animal" a bad name.

I also would not take my pet somewhere where it was not welcome...I, too, have a policy in my house about friends bringing over their pets. That policy states that I need to know in advance if their dog is cat/child friendly. And that under NO circumstances are they to leave it in the car. Just let me know if I can give it treats......and what kind of treats.

Twila,

I agree with you that there is absolutely no reason for any type of cruelty be it human or animal.

I've had many pets over my lifetime and yes they were very close to me. I remember in particular a day when both of our dogs(one large and one small) died within hours of each other. Somehow they ate some poisoned meat and the smaller one died first and we knew the same was going to happen to the larger one and it was terribly hard to watch this beloved part of our family for some 16 years die a horrible death for the better part of an hour. We contemplated doing the "ole yeller" thing but decided against it and tried to make the dog as comfortable as possible .

So you see I do love animals but will never put them on the same plain as humans.

BTW, the train question is where neither one can move without help!! :)

Dang! Well now, that puts a WHOLE new dimension to it. Well, then since the child is 3 and the animal is 10......I'll again stick with the child. I love babies too. lol

So you see I do love animals but will never put them on the same plain as humans

I respect that. I'm not a total fruit de-loop, really. LOL

I don't put them on the same plain either. Kind of like comparing apples and oranges. Oranges being protected under laws while apples are at the whim of oranges. lol I also don't baby talk to my boyfriend. I do with my cats, and other peoples cats, and to the cats at the shelter I volunteer at.

So, Tibear, let me ask you a hypothetical question regarding the hybrids. If they allowed a hybrid animal/human cross to live what rights would it have? Those of the animal or the human? Tough question I know. That's what scares me about this experiment.

The train question is really irrelevant though. It sounds to me like you use it as test - to see if others conform to your own beliefs.

If you asked me, I'd say that I'd save my dog. The 3-year-old stranger can be saved by his/her parent, who I'm sure is there, because who in their right mind would allow a child to play alone on the tracks?
