My fear about this sort of thing is that somewhere a decision has to be made as to the viability of giving a sentient being rights.

One of the most horrifying movies I've seen in a while is A.I. About the little boy robot who had no rights because he was a man made thing. Course this is coming from a person who believes animals have rights and who takes spiders outside so they don't get squished.

Having grown up in the country and having animals that we raised for food. I'm always amused by how some people equate animals at the same level as humans. I had an aunt once come over when I was young and tried to bring her dogs into our family home. She was very insulted when she was told that the dogs would remain outside with the other animals. She tried to argue that they were her children and meant as much to her and any parents children did to them.

We recognized her feelings for her dogs but they did stay outside!

This surprises me to, because animals are far more superior than humans

Twila, when you get to the island check out the animal rescue shelter in Parksville. Its a wonderful place, they have alot of bald eagles. I happen to be visiting the place when they released a bald eagle. It was even more special because the eagle was on my neices arm :D I tell ya I never met a human that was more impressive than that bald eagle

I grew up with animals raised for food, too, but that doesn't mean I can eat them all. I'll never eat a rabbit, for example.

pea... we have OWL (Orphaned Wild Life) here in Delta. I watched them release a barn owl once... you're right, it's very impressive. My son's class was chosen to have a field trip there during filming for a show on Discovery Channel.

When I read about these types od experiments, I wonder how much the scientists are driven by discovery or if it's more just to see if they can do it.

RE: Human / animal Hybrid

Science is always to see what they can manage. That's why ethicists are so important...they guide what should be managed.

Forcing a dog that's used to being inside with people it knows to stay outside is mean, tibear. Especially in a strange place. The dogs aren't used to it and don't understand. It's got nothing to do with them being treated like people, it's got to do with them having the comprehension level of dogs. I have this war at my parents house at least once a year.

I agree with you Reverend it is hard on the dogs, so why do the owners put their animals in such situations.

My aunt knew my parents feelings regarding animals in the house, so why did she bring them knowing there was going to be a conflict.

She knew it was family gathering and wanted to stress the point that her dogs were her family, problem was they weren't part of the larger family.

BTW, I also had an uncle you was completely nuts and had some turkeys as pets, and yes, he allowed to live in his home. These things were huge, as large as a 6 year old child. Would you have allowed them to run free in your home??

I've had many discussions with people who regard their pets as equal to humans. To these I ask the same question, "A train is coming, on the track lay a 3 year old child, a stranger to you, and your 10 year old cat/dog/ferret/... you only have time to save one of them. Which do you save??"

Most people will admit that they will save the 3 year old stranger because the child is human and the pet isn't. The remainder of the people refuse to answer because they don't think it makes them look good.
