How much money did it cost your friend to make that $3.3MM?

Capital losses from years prior?

Gotta ask if that $3.3MM was his personal income for that year, if so, there is no way he could shelter it all, so I'm wondering if that figure represented gross earnings in a corp or ltd?

.... Bottom line, lots of questions need answered prior to assessing any broad generalizations
And once those questions are answered, it's a specific case, not a broad generalization.

Without knowing any details of the matter I'd say he paid his share and then some!

I'm not the one with the 3.3 million buddy.

I don't pay income taxes because of business and charitable deductions. Hint: you can't use them cuz you don't pay taxes in the States.

Same situation in Canada on the charity angle.

The bottom line question is if the person earned as personal income $3.3MM... It would be their choice to donate whatever they wanted of that income, but in doing so, they carve out that amount from the funds available to themselves.

On another tack, for all we know, buddy had personal tax credits from something like capital losses to the tune of $5MM in which case his personal income of 3.3 is fully sheltered.

How long is the Canadian tax code? Anything over ten pages is full of dodges for millionaires. I know. I haven't paid a penny in income tax in a decade and a half.
Its about the size of 4 volumes of War an Peace.

Well, if he was barely turning a profit, he couldn't have been very good at it. Maybe he needed to sack the lot of you and hire a good accountant.

Did he pay more or less than the cost of the gov't. services he rec'd? Therein lies your answer.

You have to be careful with this! What would you say about a guy who paid no income tax but gave $100 grand to one of our hospital foundations?

Ah, but that's the thing isn't it? Members of the business community tend to make greater use of infrastructure provided by government.

And I would be very happy to pay almost no tax so that I could increase my charitable donations. I really don't care what the wealthy do with their money after they have accepted their fair share of the tax burden.

That's why a consumption tax is the only fair tax.

Since when? Consumption taxes mean nothing to the wealthy and burden the poor unfairly.

I'd be careful with that one, probably not completely true. There is often an on going cost with the use of infrastructure!:)

Attention "Beneficiary"
Series of meetings have been held over the past 7 months with the secretary general of the United Nations Organization. This meeting ended 3 days ago. It is obvious that you have not received your fund, which is to the tune of $5,500,000.00 US Dollar [Five Million Five Hundred Thousand U.S Dollar] due to past corrupt Governmental Officials who almost held the fund to themselves for their selfish reason and some individuals who have taken advantage of your fund all in an attempt to swindle your fund which has led to so many losses from your end and unnecessary delay in the receipt of your fund.
The National Central Bureau of Interpol enhanced by the United Nations and Federal Bureau of Investigation have successfully passed a mandate to the current president of Nigeria, his Excellency Muhammadu Buhari to boost the exercise of clearing all foreign debts owed to you and other individuals and organizations who have been found not to have received their Contract Sum, Lottery/Gambling, Inheritance and the likes. Now how would you like to receive your payment? Because we have two methods of payment which is by Cheque or by ATM card?
ATM Card: We will be issuing you a custom pin based ATM card which you will use to withdraw up to $3,000 per day from any ATM machine that has the Master Card Logo on it and the card have to be renewed in 3 years time which is 2020. Also with the ATM card you will be able to transfer your funds to your local bank account. The ATM card comes with a handbook or manual to enlighten you about how to use it, even if you do not have a bank account.
Cheque: To be deposited in your bank for it to be cleared within three working days.
Your payment will be sent to you via any of your preferred option and delivered to you by FedEx Post Services. You are only required to pay $95 U.S Dollar, for the security keeping fee and the express delivery of your Cheque or ATM Smart Card.
Take note that anyone asking you for some kind of money above the usual fee is definitely a fraudster and you will have to stop communication with every other person if you have been in contact with any. Also remember that all you will ever have to pay is $95 U.S Dollar, and we guarantee the receipt of your fund to be successfully delivered to you within the next 48 hours after the receipt of payment has been confirmed.
To EXPEDITE the release of your fund valued at $5,500,000.00 US Dollar [Five Million Five Hundred Thousand U.S Dollar], you are advised to contact our Debt Reconciliation Officer in West Africa [Nigeria], using the information below.

What percentage of tax money do you think is squandered? 40%, 50%, 60%? When a rich man makes a charitable donation almost every dollar is an effective dollar compared to the "empty" dollars he's forced to donate by most wasteful bureaucraps! :)

Squandered? I don't know. Why don't you give me an accurate estimate? I'm guess that it is nowhere near any of the numbers you mentioned. And what makes you think that every millionaire donates to charity? Some spend everything on themselves.

You want examples of squandering? Here are a few.

I wouldn't think for one second that every millionaire donates to charities but many do.

If they are conservative they probably give to charity.
