Canucks pulled out another win tonight, which brings the pre season record to 6 and 0,
not as good a game as last night, but we were playing San Jose, better team than Calgary,
and bigger, and canucks played a solid game, and managed to come away with the win.

Next game on Sunday against Anaheim, last game of pre season.

Twins were 1st and 2nd stars, and that line played well.

The Canucks once again flexed their muscle in gritty 3-2 win over the Sharks
Derek Jory
Oct 3, 2008, 1:46 AM EDT

From the opening face-off it seemed clear that Thursday's contest between the Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks wasn't going to be an offensive shootout of epic proportions.

Vancouver's 3-2 win, their sixth in pre-season play, ended up being a competitive game nonetheless, it simply didn't match the intensity that was shown a night earlier when the Canucks snuffed the Flames 6-1.

The opening period was borderline snooze time, just like last Saturday when these teams met in San Jose. They once again played cautious hockey in the first 20 minutes, it was tight-checking and for the most part uneventful.

The lone highlight of the first period was a beauty, however, and it didn't even result in a Vancouver goal.

Midway through the period Canucks forward Rick Rypien collided with Mike Moore of the Sharks in San Jose's zone. It was more of a harmless run-in than anything, but after some presumably sharp words were exchanged, the pair decided to rumble.

Rypien and Moore didn't simply run at each other in amateur fashion though, this meticulous scrap had the fans on their feet before punches were even thrown as both players threw their sticks and gloves to the ice prior to removing their helmets and tossing them aside.

As the crowd roared in anticipation the players put up their dukes and flailed themselves at one-another, Moore kicked off the fight with some big blows before Rypien got his composure and landed some equally damaging fisticuffs.

A good old fashioned school yard brawl it was, minus the wagering and chanting, as the duo went at it for what seemed like minutes but was really only :45 seconds.

In the end Rypien got part of Moore's jersey over his head, landing more five-finger furry along the way, judging by the home crowd cheers this one went to Rypien, but it was close.

Had this fight taken place between a couple of Joes on the street, both fighters would have walked away with stories of the momentous brawl they once took part in. For Rypien, it was just another day at the rink.

"It was just a couple of guys playing hard, I don't think anybody was looking for it, it was just one of those things that happen and it was good," said Rypien, who is sporting some fresh stitches under his chin and a few older ones under his left eye.

It wasn't the greatest fight ever, nor was it the worst, but it highlighted one of the most alluring position battles that is currently going on with the Canucks.

The fists have been flying from three players this pre-season, Rypien, Nathan McIver and Mike Brown have dropped the gloves nine times all-together as they fight it out, literally, for a spot on Vancouver's roster come next Thursday when the Canucks host the Flames to begin the 2008-09 season.

The role they're looking to fulfill is that of the team's tough, gritty enforcer that plays with a lot of energy, will hit anything in sight and obviously doesn't have any quandaries about sparking the Canucks by going toe-to-toe with the oppositions tough guys.

"There's a lot of guys here that are fighting for a spot like that and I just can't worry about too many other guys, I'm just worrying about me and how the staff is going to look at me," said Brown, who took part in his fourth fight of the pre-season when he and San Jose's Jody Shelley went at it in the second period.

"It's a good battle so far and I'm just doing my best to get under their skin, make the big hit, do the job on the penalty kill and just try to get under guy's skin and rattle people by making that big hit and making them come after me."

McIver, who watched Thursday's game from the press box, has two fights under his belt this pre-season, he realizes it's important to show that he isn't afraid of that part of the role, but he knows Vancouver's coaching staff got a taste of that from him last season.

The 23-year-old defenceman appeared in 17 games with the Canucks last year, fighting eight times along the way, he finished second on the team in fights behind Jeff Cowan who led the team with 12.

"I think the coaching staff knows that I can fight so I think it's important to show how I can play away from the puck and in my own end and show that I can play in the league," said McIver. "But with the way I play the fights happen, I try to play tough.

"I just let it happen, I don't think about it every shift that I'm going to fight this guy or I'm going to fight that guy, I just go out there and play and if something happens, something happens."

Rypien's first period fight with Moore didn't swing the momentum of the period as San Jose opened the scoring late in the frame, but the players realize that what they do with their fists and bodies can have a major impact on the game and their ability to swing the tempo in Vancouver's favor is imperative to them making the team.

"If we're down a goal or two and I can go out there and give us a little boost that's huge," said McIver. "Same goes with a big hit, sometimes it just really boosts the guys."

"It gets the energy of the game up," added Brown, "and it gets my energy going, it's just good overall for the team to get the spirit and tempo up."

Rypien, McIver and Brown have all proven they can give and take punches effectively so it's now a matter of who has established themselves as the best overall tough, gritty enforcer in the eyes of Vancouver's coaches and management.

That player will be seeing a lot more punches starting in a week's time.

2 – Fights in Thursday's game; Rypien fought Moore and Brown rumbled with Shelley

5 – Vancouver players who have dropped the gloves this pre-season

11 – Fights the Canucks have been involved in this pre-season

12 – Scraps Jeff Cowan was part of last season; he led the team

68 – Fights for the Canucks last season which ranked them third in the league

Vancouver started slow but got the ball rolling in the second period with a pair of powerplay goals.

They only generated 20 shots overall, yet the ones that got to Sharks netminder Evgeni Nabokov were good ones.

Vancouver's defenders weren't moving the puck as smoothly as usual, some new pairings could be the reason for that. They blocked nine shots though and broke up a few odd man rushes in San Jose's favor, so they played well overall.

Vancouver's special teams has been great thus far in pre-season play and they were once again effective against San Jose. The Canucks went 2-for-6 on their powerplay opportunites, while denying the Sharks any goals while they were up a man, San Jose finished 0-for-6.

Vancouver Canucks - Preview: Anaheim @ Vancouver - 10/05/2008

Anaheim @ Vancouver - 10/05/2008

Oct 5, 2008, 7:00 PM PT
Tickets still available to preseason home games vs. Anaheim.

CHECK GAME & TICKET AVAILABILITY Watch the game live on Canucks.com starting 7:00pm PST and live interviews from the Canucks dressing room and Alain Vigneault's press conference following the game.

The Canucks try to get lucky number seven Sunday night at GM Place when the Anaheim Ducks visit for the final game of the preseason.

They've started their season on a 6-0 run and although there are no points on the line, there are smiles all around for new GM, Mike Gillis and the new look Canucks he brought in.

While opposition teams may have been dressing a lineup less skilled than ones they will see on opening night, the Canucks have managed to fight their ways to victories with or without the Sedins and Luongo on a nightly basis.

This is a positive sign for a team who is hoping to bounce back from a disappointing year that saw them on the outside of the playoff picture just one year ago.

Roberto Luongo will dress against the Ducks, who have recently reduced their roster down to 27 players on Thursday.

CAMP CENTRAL
Roster taking shapeThe Vancouver Canucks did some more shaping of their roster on Saturday as the club announced that defenceman Nolan Baumgartner has been assigned to Manitoba, while fellow D-man Nathan McIver and forward Jeff Cowan were placed on waivers.

McIver, who appeared in three pre-season games with the Canucks with a plus-2 rating, was quickly snatched off waivers by the Anaheim Ducks, Vancouver's opponent in their pre-season finale Sunday night.

The departure of these three players leaves the team with 27 players on their roster.

"I thought Jeff (Cowan) played well during camp but obviously some kids have been playing well also and sort of pushed him out of that job," said Vigneault. "Jeff has been a good pro and we just decided to give him an opportunity to maybe pursue his career with another organization, so we put him on waivers."

It's really too bad they had to try to get McIver through waivers, as he
is a very good defenceman and I am not at all surprised he was picked up.
Canucks is very deep in 'good' defense, so with the rulings of which ones
have to go through waivers and which ones can 'just' be sent down, they
had to take some risks. I wish they had taken Baumgartner instead.'

I think Vancouver will be a far superior team than they were last year. They just seemed to have a different mentality playing the pre-season games than they did last year. That's why I picked Luongo in my pool! I think he'll get lots of wins and shutouts, and the team will make the playoffs.

My Leafs....probably not.:-(;-)

Yeah, I like the way the canucks have approached the new season as well, working very,
as there are many positions available, and a bunch of pretty good players to fill them.
They play their last pre season game tonight, and win or lose, they have had an excellent
pre season, and should help along when league play starts.
As long as the total effort is there, and we can see that there is better offence than last
year, which there seems to be, I will be happy, as they will get their share of wins, and
hopefully make the playoffs, but as for Toronto, jury is out on that story, for the
moment.

Hodgson

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that Cody Hodgson will return to Brampton for the 2008-09 season.

Hodgson, 18, signed his first pro contract on Sunday October 5, 2008 after playing in three NHL preseason games, recording an assist and six penalty minutes.

Last season, Hodgson had 40 goals and 45 assists with the Battalion. His 40 goals led the team and his 85 points were good to rank him in the top 20 in OHL scoring last year.

On the international level, Hodgson captained Canada’s Gold Medal winning U-18 entry in the World Junior Championships, and led the tournament in scoring with 12 points in 7 games.

The 6'0", 185 pound forward from Haliburton, Ontario was drafted tenth overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Potential & promise
The Vancouver Canucks have looked impressive in pre-season, now the real work begins
John Garrett
Oct 7, 2008, 12:38 PM EDT

Preseason is a time for optimism. It is a time to feel good about your team and the players on that team.

You can spin every game into a positive. You do not have to win, you can look at the good things that happen even in a loss but what happens if you do not lose.

The Canucks are in an enviable position to look at what has happened and be able to build on the phenomenal results of the preseason.

You could not have asked for a better script. They were a perfect 6-0 heading into their final preseason game with 20 goals for and only 12 against. The power play was third and the penalty killing was eighth.

And finishing the preseason 6-0-1 - good for second best in the League behind the reigning Stanley Cup champs, Detroit Red Wings, according to the NHL preseason standings - isn't a bad start for a team predicted to finish near the bottom by analysts, even if it is only the preseason.

Roberto Luongo looked to be in midseason form and the defensive corps was still, and I emphasize still, in perfect health. It looks as though the top three lines are set and the fourth line is close to being finished. Every goal you want to achieve before the season starts has been done and now the work begins.

Well. Pettinger and Krog cleared waivers, and they are now in Manitoba, and Cowan also
cleared waivers but he is going to play for Peoria, St. Louis's farm team, the reason is, that
each farm team has a quota of how many NHL players, (who have played a certain no. of games ), they can have, so he was sent to St. Louis's team instead, I remember manitoba taking in Baumgartner for the last two years, when he belonged to another NHL team, but
this year he does belong to Calnucks, and he is now in Manitoba as well.

There's nothing like opening night
On the eve of opening night for the Canucks, emotion are mixed for the first game of the regular season.
Jeff Paterson
Oct 8, 2008, 1:25 PM EDT

There’s nothing quite like opening night in the National Hockey League -- the energy and excitement, the start of another season full of promise, another year of heart-pounding action and the return of the hopes and dreams, not only of the teams that play the games, but the many fans who follow their every move.

Unfortunately, in and around all the hype and hoopla, opening night at General Motors Place will also include a gut-wrenching, tear-jerking moment of silence as the Canucks pay tribute to Luc Bourdon.

Talk about mixed emotions.

Imagine being a teammate and having to crank up your intensity level for a key divisional game against heated rival Calgary – the team Bourdon faced in his final NHL game on April 5th -- moments after watching a pre-game video tribute and celebration of a young life that was cut tragically short in a fatal motorcycle accident on a New Brunswick highway on May 29th.

INSIDE THE BOX

Live on CDC
Watch the pre-game tribute ceremony on Canucks.com starting at 7:30PST on Thursday, October 9th.

“It’s not going to be easy, that’s for sure,” says new Canuck captain Roberto Luongo.

“We’ve lost a friend and a teammate and that’s always something that’s hard to deal with. At the same time, we have to rally around that and really dedicate the game to Luc and try to win it for him. I’ve been thinking a lot about Luc this preseason. It’s always devastating when you lose somebody like that and it has crossed my mind more often than not especially since I got back (to town).”

While many of Bourdon’s teammates, coaches and members of the Canucks management group attended the funeral, this will be the first
