Canucks Oilers Tuesday 6:30

Preview Canucks-Oilers 8 GP 7 (from canucks.com)
The Vancouver Canucks are pulling out of a slow start to the season, and they feel the addition of David Booth may expedite that process.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is looking to continue his own impressive start for the Edmonton Oilers - and stay in the NHL.

Booth is expected to make his debut for the Canucks on Tuesday night, when they try to solve Nugent-Hopkins and beat the Oilers again to record their first three-game winning streak of 2011-12.

Vancouver dropped four of its first six, including being shut out twice, before combining for eight goals in consecutive wins.

Coming off a 3-2 overtime victory versus Minnesota on Saturday, the Canucks (4-3-1) are looking for Booth to help them get rolling. They acquired him along with Steven Reinprecht and a third-round draft pick in 2013 from Florida for forwards Marco Sturm and Mikael Samuelsson following the win.

Reinprecht was sent to Chicago of the AHL on Monday.

"It's an opportunity to have a top-six forward and a left winger to play with Ryan Kesler," general manager Mike Gillis said of Booth. "We were looking to try to get a little bit younger and a little quicker. This should give us an opportunity for a little more balance."

Booth is trying to shake off his own rough start. He had one assist in six games with the Panthers after leading them with 23 goals last season.

He thinks the move can rejuvenate his career as he tries to regain the form that led to him registering career highs of 31 goals and 29 assists three seasons ago. Booth was limited to 28 games in 2009-10 due to a pair of concussions.

"I feel like I can get back there and can get even higher," Booth told the Canucks' official website. "I'm playing with some good players now and that's something that I think comes with time."

Booth is expected to join Kesler and Chris Higgins, his teammate at Florida last season, on the second line. Higgins has three goals and two assists, while Kesler has one goal after netting a career-high 42 in 2010-11.

"If you've got two lines that can produce offensively and if you've got two other lines that can wear down the opposition and spend time in their end, it makes it a lot more challenging for the opposition and that's what we're hoping to get," coach Alain Vigneault said.

Nugent-Hopkins is making an immediate impact for the Oilers (3-2-2), leading them with five goals and seven points. The top pick in last summer's draft scored three of those goals in a 4-3 loss to Vancouver on Oct. 15.

The 18-year-old center scored another goal before setting up Corey Potter's first of the season in Saturday's 2-0 win over the New York Rangers.

With two games to go before Nugent-Hopkins reaches the nine-game threshold that would start his three-year, entry-level contract, the Oilers haven't made a decision on whether to send him back to his junior team.

"I don't really worry about it. I just try to take it day by day," Nugent-Hopkins said. "Right now, I'm here so I'm happy. I'm just doing everything I can to stay here, and I'm just going to keep doing that until I get told whether I am or whether I'm not."

Nikolai Khabibulin may get another start as he's making a strong case to become Edmonton's No. 1 goaltender. He stopped 19 shots Saturday to improve to 2-0-2 with a 0.72 goals-against average.

Devan Dubnyk has dropped his last two games, including a 22-save performance against Vancouver.

Sami Salo's goal for the Canucks in the third period provided the difference in that meeting. The 37-year-old defenseman came up big again Saturday, scoring with 20.8 seconds left in OT.

His three goals have already tied his total from last season when injuries limited him to 27 games.

The Canucks have won nine of the last 12 meetings with the Oilers, and Roberto Luongo has won seven of his last nine with a 2.01 GAA. He's likely to be back in net after backup Cory Schneider beat the Wild.

canucks didn't start well tonight, twins didn't show up till the 3rd period, and luongo was average.

they turned it on in the 3rd period, almost caught up, but it didn't happen.

schneider played very well.

the loss was not entirely luongo's fault, but he was only average, and didn't make any 'big' saves,
and let in one stinker.

not sure how they will make decisions concerning luongo, guess they have to keep playing him, and
he either has to play himself 'off' the team, or get much better, they can't just throw him under
the bus yet, he has to dictate if he should be playing or not by 'how' he plays.

the defense was floundering around early on in this game, I know vineault has been changing pairings
around to find the best fit, so he will have to figure it out, and he will.

the new player (david booth),looked fine, great skater, and once he becomes familiar with the team and his line, they
will be very good, he will complement kesler, and higgins on the other side is doing just fine.

And, I just love watching that great line of young guys, hall, eberle and neugent/
hopkins, they will be a top line in the NHL in the near future, and for many years to
come.

3-2 kreskin, i'll bet you peeked at some point in the game.

The Canucks can't expect to win a lot of games by scoring only two goals. Back when Luongo was in his prime(sarcasm)
they could shut out some teams. Right now Vancouver is inconsistant as hell. We're never completely sure which
team is going to show up.

That's why I think those 3 need to go.

its pretty hard to get rid of two players who won the hart trophies last two years.
they started this season like gang busters for first 3 games, then they struggled, so their
game is there, they just have to get the lead out.

luongo will dictate his own future by his play, if he keeps playing how he has been, he
will end it all on his own, its only october, kind of soon to pull the plug.

The twins allready
have lots of points, even though the recent play has dropped, so it would be silly to panic about
them right now.

The defense, especially bieksa and ballard are playing minus hockey right now, -7, almost at the
bottom of the league, so those two must raise their game and do it soon.

Yeah, I guess as long as your goal is to reach the playoffs, but not win, the twins would be good to keep.

Yeah, I guess as long as your goal is to reach the playoffs, but not win, the twins would be good to keep.

the twins can't be soley blamed for not winning the cup. Luongo lost games in boston all by himself by
going paralized in goal.

the power play shut down, the twins don't play the power play all by themselves, there is two sets of
power play players, and none of them did anything, most of the playoffs.

without the twins, presidents cup would not been won, they were the reason for so much of that success.

because the cup wasn't won is not a reason to get rid of them. if the twins were traded every other team

and their management would think the canucks management is crazy. doesn't make sense. add players to

help them out, don't get rid of them.

Even luongo's goaltending last season was excellent, hence nomination for vezna. he just didn't play
well in boston in playoffs.

one has to pay attention to facts and stats and not jump ship because of a few games early in the season

they probably won't win presidents cup again, that is a very difficult height to reach, but one never
knows, we'll see.

The twins 'couldn't play their game', you said before.

I'm not jumping ship, I've never been on it. I just think this worshipping of people who don't perform when it counts is strange.
Facts and stats only count if you're not worrying about winning the cup. Which apparently is what they want; heck, it's done wonders for Toronto for 40 years.

yes, of course I said the twins couldn't play their game, that doesn't mean forever, it means right now.
I don't worship anyone, ever.
No not worrying about winning the cup, it is october, I am enjoying october hockey, and I will enjoy the
playoffs when they arrive, I don't dwell on long term wishes, we don't have a clue what will happen
throughout the season, I enjoy the hockey games as they come, and don't think about playoffs till playoffs become important, even then I don't ever worry about hockey, I enjoy hockey.

Toronto looks improved this season, its still only october.

have you ever heard the expression 'one game at a time' it is said at every interview with players and
coaches, because media, fans etc., want to know aobut the whole season, now, not a wise way to either
coach or play, but I suppose fans have nothing better to say, they don't seem to understand the game
much, and aren't interested in anything else but winning games, and they are 'only' interested in their
own team, pretty short sighted, and tunnel visioned, and if everything doesn't go their way, they feel
they should whine and complain and demand people be fired. Kind of humourous and silly because there
is always the other team who also want to win, and don't just give you the game.

The first period was very good, two teams battling for puck possession and neither team giving up much
at all.

The second period canucks began sliding backwards, and for the rest of the game they were not the best
team on the ice.

The defense again, when they pinched in on the play, were left behind when the play went the other way,
which left the opposition with good chances on our goal.

I thought Sulzer, the new defenseman played very well for his first NHL game.

Schneider played fine, but time took its toll, and there was just too much open ice at times for st. louis,
so 3 goals made their way behind him.

Canucks first line had nothing to give, burrows had a few chances, but their goalie came up big, but
burrows did play fine, twins did not.
Sedins are not having any success, but they are intelligent players, they will raise their game at some
point and figure out how to change their game a bit so that they have more success.

Second line is doing fine, but needs a little more time for kesler and booth to find their chemistry, and
I thought kesler tried too many silly shots tonight that had no chance of going anywhere.

This is work in progress, so we will just have to bare it out till they get their game going better.

Washington comes in Saturday, luongo will be playing, which he should, and if washington defeat edmonton
tomorrow they will come here with a perfect winning record this season, they seem like a more complete team
now, and ovetchkin isn't running around all over the place controlling the game, the whole team is.

I will watch that game tomorrow with great interest, and I'll cheer for edmonton.

Just like Henrik is saying right now in his interview, they just have to practice harder, then play better.

I have watched canucks since their birth through good times and bad and each will end eventually, so I
will grind it out with them till they look better, its just hockey, sometimes up and sometimes down.

Its only October, I've got lots of hockey to watch, and I'm not going to fret and whine about canucks
at this time of the year, the season is too long, and I'm not going to stress myself over hockey games,
I'm going to enjoy them, win or lose.

score- 3-0, st. louis

Hope all of you eager, alert hockey fans out there watched edmonton/washington tonight.

Khabbibulin was amazing, gave his team a chance to give washington their first loss, and that
is exactly what happened.

Even though the edmonton team, and the kids played very well, they would not have won this
game without their goalie, he was unbelievable.

What a great game that was, talloola. Khabibulin was outstanding in goal last night. I love watching the Oiler 'kids' play......they do so with such energy and heart......and smarts too. Hope to hear that they are indeed going to keep Ryan Nugent Hopkins on the team, he is a definite asset. There were times last night, especially during the second period, when the Oilers simply skated rings around the Capitols with their puck handling and passing - great hockey, great entertainment. The Capitols let themselves down by taking so many stupid penalties though they gave it a good try coming back in the 3rd........Khabby was there to put an end to any chance of a victory.

The Oilers are quickly becoming my favorite team to watch. Good night for the Leafs and Senators too. Didn't see the Habs and Bruins but caught the Marchand/PK fight on Sports Center and had to laugh with PK when interviewed after the game. Hope they have that out of their systems now.

I missed that interview, but did catch the fight, and the first two attempts as well.
Had to snicker when PK took a mighty swing and thru himself right off his feet, but
I would have loved to see him connect, as marchant is such a 'little rat', wouldn't
bother me a bit to see that nose bleeding. lol

Yes the oilers are now starting to bloom again, they had to suffer out lots of poor seasons to acquire those
great young players, but now they are starting to have fun again, and good for them.

They had a bit of luck last night, as all of those penalties washington took hurt them, and if the oilers had
to play 60 minutes of 5 on 5 hockey against washington, I am sure the outcome would have been different, as
caps are a very strong and very deep team this year 5 on 5.
Khabibulin played his heart out, stopped everything that came his way.
Can't see Luongo playing 'that' good tomorrow, he might get there, but not in one game, he, and the team
are real dozy right now, and if they don't get the lead out, they will be embarrassed on saturday.

We'll see, they have to turn it up a bit with each game, and tomorrow is a good time to start.

I hear that hodgson will be on the second line with kesler and booth, and higgins will be on the third line.
Higgins has lots of energy but isn't transferring to anything constructive, (points), so I agree with
vineault, that he must juggle lines to find success. I don't believe in leaving players together whom
are not looking good. They are professionals and should be able to figure it out, doesn't matter what line
they are on, with exception of our new player, who needs some time to settle in.

Booth has finally had a couple of days to catch up on sleep which he missed since his flight to vancouver,
and the frenzy of starting with a new team, he and kesler and whomever is playing the other side, will
figure each other out over the next few games, then watch them go, kesler was trying to do too much in the
last game.

They just aren't awake yet, noticed many times checks were not finished, and the skating and hustle just
wasn't there, and that includes the twins, although they have their points, they haven't been lately, but
early on, as they played great in the first few games, then dissapeared.

CANUCKS VS CAPITALS - sat. 7:00, Rogers Arena

hope they have their after burners on, they're going to need them.

This time of year I have a hard time keeping up with all that is going on in sports..........there are so many to watch. Skate Canada started yesterday, the Pan Am Games and the World Series - Yeah Cards!, and most importantly, for me, the CFL. Will not be watching the Canucks tonight talloola so will ask you to cheer for me while I watch your Lions and cheer for them - kick-off at 7pm PST on TSN.

Back to your comment about the Marchand - PK 'fight'. What I found so refreshing and funny about PK's post-game interview was that he pointed out how silly he looked trying to launch a roundhouse punch only to fall on his face - love that guy. I know you are anything but a fan of Marchand's but I do give him credit when he decides to simply play hockey and leave all the other nonsense aside as he can really add an important element to the Bruins. Just saying.

they can be as hungry as they want, its obvious washington have been 'more' hungry right from the get go,
but then they had a poor play off run, last spring, and the spring before, and have such a good team,
that could not figure out how to play playoff hockey.
Washington are playing a different game than they have in the past, they are playing a complete game now,
not the run n gun ovetchkin led, one man wrecking crew game.

Guess they finally started listening to boudreau.

If washington defeat canucks tonight, at least I want to see that canucks played a very good game, and
also had good goalkeeping, the rest doesn't really matter.

I don't really care 'who' is 'where', in the standings right now, once every team gets going to their best,
that can change quickly, its when a team is way down at the bottom about half way through the season,
that it becomes a problem.

OK then, that was good. Between Oilers and the Canucks, capitals will be glad to run back to

washington with their tail between their legs, to play all their eastern teams, can't handle

the west. lol

and JLM, speaking of the standings, have you checked recently where boston is?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like washington is just what the doctor ordered for vancouver, they remembered how good

they really are, and brought their pride with them as well.

Love our 4th line.

Luongo played well, did what he needed to do to help his team win. There was that silly goal

where the puck went up in the air, then behind him, but he didn't see it, and too bad he couldn't

hang onto that penalty shot, he did stop it, just couldn't hang on.
no goalie would have stopped that ovetchkin shot, and the other one, johansson.

But most importantly, the 'whole' team played better, worked very hard and that payed off in the end.

7-4 canucks

2 goals for higgins, lapierre and Edler, and one for Henrik
Canucks go to calgary next.

And the lions did it too, good night for vancouver sports.
