I'm not sure which team it was but a few years back a team won it for the first time in 54 years. Help me out here, Talloola, was it the Rangers?

I don't remember of the top of my head, would have to research, and it is too late now.
The rangers won it in 94 when they beat the canucks in the finals, not sure when the last one was for
them before that one, maybe it was the rangers.

it sure wasn't toronto lol

it had to be an original six, rangers fits that bill.

I hate the Rangers. Especially Mark Messier. I hated Messier when he was on the Oilers and would slash Thomas Gradin on the head and not get a penalty. Then I hated Messier when he played on the Canucks, he was a floater.

yes, me too, not a messier fan ever. I remember that slash. And when he came to canucks and also
mike keenan, it was just too much to take, then keenan traded linden away. That was not a good time
for canucks or their fans.

The Canucks certainly tested out their penalty killing skills last night, thankfully they got high scores. Really thought Lu had this one in the books - darn those Flames for ruining the story.

yeah, as they were coming up the ice toward canuck zone, I said "don't let them score now, please", and
you know the ending to that story, 3 seconds later it was in the net.

I did about the same thing. It was too bad. Luongo had made some terrific stops and it could
have been a shut out.....Oh well...:roll::smile:

With Keenan, he was such a disappointment from expectations he just couldn't live up to.

Is there a person alive who hasn't disappointed Keenan. I'd have thought he'd have been committed years ago as a text book nut case and total control freak. He should have been gathered in the day he got rid of Trevor Linden.

Wild

TV: SNET-Pacific (HD), FS-North (HD), FS-Wisconsin (HD)

Last 10: Vancouver 5-5-0; Minnesota 4-3-3

Season series: Thursday marks the second of six meetings between the Northwest Division rivals. On Oct. 22, Sami Salo scored the game-winner with 21 seconds left in overtime to lift the Canucks to a 3-2 win at Rogers Arena.

Big Story: After consecutive one-goal losses, the Wild finally broke through by sweeping its home-and-home series with the Red Wings -- with each win coming by one goal. The Canucks, the NHL's highest-scoring team last season, finally got their offense untracked by scoring 12 goals in their last two games while beating Washington and Calgary.

Team Scope:

Canucks: No one was happier to see October come to an end than Roberto Luongo.

After registering a 3-3-1 mark with a 3.54 goals-against average during the opening month of the season, Luongo kicked off November and the Canucks' six-game road trip in style by stopping 28 of 29 shots in a 5-1 victory in Calgary on Wednesday night.

Luongo's lone blemish came with 31.6 seconds remaining in the game when Alex Tanguay scored to spoil his shutout bid. But in a game where five Canucks found the back of the net, the game was out of reach for the Flames by the second period.

"We got the two points, that's all that mattered," Luongo said. "We got some big goals early on in the game and extend the lead in the second. We did a great job out there for 60 minutes."

Wild: Having played in five straight one-goal decisions, Minnesota has become accustomed to playing tightly-contested games over the last three weeks.

After a 1-0 victory over the Red Wings in St. Paul in the opening leg of their home-and-home series on Saturday, the Wild participated in a similarly gritty contest on Tuesday, when they used a tip-in by Mikko Koivu with 60 seconds left to force overtime before Devin Setoguchi's connected on a power-play rebound for a 2-1 OT win in Detroit.

"You've got to bear down in front [of the net]," Setoguchi said. "Obviously, their D is going to try and move you out of the way, so it's about getting in front in the high traffic areas and being tough on pucks and get shots off of loose pucks."

Josh Harding (2-0-1), whose first three starts of the season have come against the Red Wings, will get the nod again on Thursday against Vancouver.

Who's Hot: Vancouver defenseman Alexander Edler has three goals and six points in his last two games. … Setoguchi mustered only two points in his first six games of the season, but has bounced back with two goals and five points.

Injury Report: Mason Raymond (back), Byron Bitz (lower body), Aaron Rome (broken hand) and Steve Pinizzotto (shoulder) are on IR for Vancouver and are expected to miss Thursday's game. … Cody Almond (back), Mike Lundin (upper body) and Greg Zanon (groin) will not play against Vancouver, while Clayton Stoner (hand) is a game-time decision.

Stat Pack: Harding, who missed the entire 2010-11 season due to a knee injury, has faced the Red Wings in seven of his last 16 games dating back to the '09-10 season. Harding showed his familiarity with Detroit during his team's recent home-and-home sweep, stopping 72 of 73 shots.

Puck Drop: The Canucks offense has found its rhythm over the last two games, and coach Alain Vigneault attributes his team's success in that span to its fearless play around the net.

"It's about playing the right way," Vigneault said. "Our guys are trying real hard around the other team's net. Net presence, going there, and we've been able to beat two pretty good goaltenders."

Is Luongo a professional goalie again? Is it safe to watch now?

ha ha, your a goof, pull yourself together now, it's pretty safe, because he isn't playing tonight. lol

minnesota is outplaying canucks, they are so fast on the puck, and if it wasn't for schneider it would
be out of reach for canucks after 2 periods.
i'll bet luongo is relieved 'not' to be playing this game, schneider has made many very very good saves,
some looked like sure goals.

Preview Blues return home to host inconsistent Canucks Frank Mentesana - NHL.com Staff Writer

TV: SNET-Pacific (HD), FS-Midwest (HD)

Last 10: Vancouver 5-5-0; St. Louis 5-5-0

Season series: Friday marks the second of four meetings between these Western Conference foes. On Oct. 26 in Vancouver, each team's backup netminder started in goal and Brian Elliott outdueled Cory Schneider in a 3-0 St. Louis victory. Elliott made 32 saves for his 10th career shutout and Alexander Steen scored two goals in the win.

Big Story: The only thing consistent about St. Louis and Vancouver this season has been their inconsistency. Both clubs sit in fourth place in their respective divisions, having been unable to gain any traction in the early going. Maybe the biggest reason these teams are around the .500 mark is the erratic play of their No. 1 goaltenders. Roberto Luongo, a Vezina Trophy finalist last season, is 4-3-1 with a goals-against average of 3.20 and a save percentage of just .883. He has allowed three or more goals in six of his eight starts, though he has won his last two outings. For the Blues, Jaroslav Halak has made only six starts and won just once, posting a 3.58 GAA and .843 save percentage. The only time Halak allowed fewer than three goals was in his lone victory, when he faced just 17 shots against Calgary on Oct. 10.

Team Scope:

Canucks: The Canucks have yet to win or lose more than two games in a row this season, and they were denied their first three-game winning streak on Thursday thanks to a 5-1 drubbing in Minnesota. Dan Hamhuis scored his first goal of the season 2:20 into the game, but the Wild scored five unanswered goals as they launched 45 shots at Cory Schneider, who started in place of Luongo and played well despite the final score.

"We lost 5-1 and our best player by far was our goaltender. That about can sum it up right there," coach Alain Vigneault said.

The Canucks were hoping to build on consecutive wins -- a 7-4 victory over the Capitals and a 5-1 rout of the Flames -- but were handed their second four-goal loss of the young season instead.

"I think everyone's surprised. This has got to be one of the worst performances I've been a part of in this jersey," defenseman Kevin Bieksa said. "It was the defense, the goalies, the forwards, everybody, coaches, everyone was involved in this one. We all take the blame for it."

Blues: The Blues have been off since Sunday, when they finished a four-game road trip with a 4-2 loss in Edmonton. David Backes and Alex Pietrangelo tallied for St. Louis, which has followed up its first three-game winning streak of the season with back-to-back losses. The struggling Halak played for the first time since he was pulled in a loss against the Kings on Oct. 18, when he surrendered four goals on 18 shots in just over two periods of play. Elliott started the next four games, winning three in a row until a 3-1 defeat on Friday in Calgary. On Sunday, Halak stopped 26 of 30 shots by the Oilers, who scored twice on the power play.

"This is a game we really wanted to get before we have a long break," defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk said. "They came out hard and played a great game and we couldn't capitalize on our chances. The feeling in the locker room is that this game is on us, not on our goalie. We hung him out to dry tonight."

After playing eight of their first 11 games on the road, the Blues are back home for six of their next seven. Their lone road game in the first 2 1/2 weeks of November is Saturday in Minnesota.

Who's Hot: Vancouver defenseman Alexander Edler has 10 points (3 goals, 7 assists) in his last seven games and Daniel Sedin has a point in each of his prior three games. … For the Blues, Steen had points in three straight until the loss in Edmonton, but still has a plus-5 rating over the previous four games. The 27-year-old center leads St. Louis with six goals and nine points in 11 games this season.

Injury Report: Vancouver defenseman Sami Salo was scratched against the Wild because of a sore groin muscle and is questionable for Friday. Mason Raymond (back), Byron Bitz (lower body), Aaron Rome (broken hand) and Steve Pinizzotto (shoulder) remain on IR. … For St. Louis, David Perron (post-concussion syndrome), B.J. Crombeen (fractured left scapula) and Andy McDonald (concussion) are on IR, while defenseman Kent Huskins (bruised left ankle) is day-to-day.

Stat Pack: Special teams have been St. Louis' biggest problem. The Blues, who have only 2 goals in their last 31 man-advantage opportunities, have the bottom-ranked power play in the League at 8.3 percent. They are also 29th in the NHL in penalty killing at 72.2 percent. A positive for St. Louis is that it allows the fewest shots per game in the League at 25.9.

Puck Drop: Cardinals' ace Chris Carpenter, the winning pitcher of Game 7 of the World Series, skated with the Blues at their practice on Thursday. The right-hander was an all-state defenseman for Trinity High School in Manchester, New Hampshire, but chose to pursue a career in baseball.

"It was always a dream to do that (play hockey), but I think I chose the right route," Carpenter said. "Hockey made you much tougher, I know that. Growing up playing hockey made me much tougher than baseball would have. It's a tougher sport, more fun sport. I enjoy it a lot."

Carpenter, a Blues season-ticket holder, will be at Friday's game along with recently-retired manager Tony La Russa and World Series MVP David Freese. La Russa will participate in a ceremonial puck drop prior to the game and the Blues are offering mezzanine-level tickets for $11.11 to commemorate the Cardinals' 11th championship.

I like that bieksa owned the miserable play of the team last night, but he should have left the word
goalie out of his statement, schneider was great and prevented the score from being 10-1 instead of
5-1, they hung him out to dry, his marvelous play in the first period kept them in it, and gave them
the chance to bounce back and take the game over, they didn't, they were even worse, and the fact that
they had a 1-0 lead said nothing about their play at all, they were completely outplayed throughout
the whole game.

Blackhawks

Preview Canucks meet Hawks for first time since playoffs Pete Jensen - NHL.com Staff Writer Stats

Season series: Chicago and Vancouver clash Sunday for the first of four regular season head-to-head meetings this season. Last year, these Western Conference foes were well-acquainted with each other, splitting four matchups in the regular season and dueling again in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Canucks jumped out to a 3-0 series lead before dropping three straight games as the Blackhawks forced Game 7. In the decisive game, Alex Burrows notched the overtime winner to help Vancouver avoid a historic playoff collapse and finally advance past the Blackhawks after playoff series defeats in each of the previous two seasons.

Big Story: The Central division-leading Blackhawks welcome the Canucks to United Center on Sunday to kick off a new chapter of the team’s heated rivalry – which has seen them meet in each of the last three postseasons. Vancouver is coming off a 3-2 road loss to the St. Louis Blues on Friday. Chicago, meanwhile, dropped an even more excruciating 5-4 overtime decision on the same night in Tampa Bay.

Team Scope:

Canucks: Vancouver kicked off its stretch of six games away from home with a convincing win Tuesday night in Calgary, but things have not gotten any easier for the Canucks in their ensuing two games.

After scoring 12 goals in a two-game win streak over the Capitals and Flames, Vancouver’s offense has followed with only three goals in consecutive losses. While Vancouver managed to score first in both defeats, courtesy of goals by Dan Hamhuis against the Minnesota Wild and Alexandre Burrows against the Blues, their offense has struggled to find the back of the net in crunch time.

The Canucks surrendered five consecutive goals in Thursday night’s loss, but coach Alain Vigneault saw a much better effort from his team against the Blues, when they were a few bounces away from righting the ship.

"Obviously we played a better game than we did [on Thursday]," Vigneault said. "It was important that our guys responded with a better effort, better execution. I think that was there for the most part."

Blackhawks: Chicago, winners of three-straight games entering Friday’s clash with Tampa Bay, used a three-goal spurt to take a 4-2 advantage midway through the second period.

But Steven Stamkos, who finished with a hat trick in the game, scored twice to erase the Bolts’ deficit before the end of the frame. Then, after a scoreless third period, Vincent Lecavalier’s notched the game-winner in the final minute of overtime to deal the Blackhawks a crushing defeat.

"We had the momentum, we had them on their heels," Jonathan Toews told the Associated Press. "But we got into some bad habits and let them back into it."

Who's Hot: Patrick Kane, who leads the Blackhawks in assists (11) and points (15) on the season, has reeled off two goals and seven points in his last three games. … Burrows has three points in as many games for Vancouver.

Injury Report: Duncan Keith (upper body) is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Canucks, as Blackhawks’ coach Joel Quenneville has only said he hopes his blueliner will be ready. … Alexandre Burrows (back spasms) and Sami Salo (lower body) are questionable for Sunday’s game in Chicago. Mason Raymond (back), Byron Bitz (lower body), Aaron Rome (broken hand) and Steve Pinizzotto (shoulder) are listed on IR for Vancouver.

Stat Pack: While Chicago is third in the League with 3.23 goals per game, their power-play conversion percentage is third-worst in the League (10.4 percent).

Puck Drop: Kane has thrived after his early season transition from right wing to center. But despite his strong start to the season, the 22-year-old continues to embrace every opportunity to develop other phases of his game.

"I knew I wanted to take the step of being one of the best players in the League," Kane told the Chicago Tribune. "My main purpose is to create scoring chances, but you have to be responsible in your own end too. I'm trying. You prove yourself defensively."

not sure, but it seems that burrows won't be playing tonight, as he suffered back spasms from that hit
on the boards in last game.

canucks are very inconsistent right now, never sure how they will play.
I notice that I am not in 'game' mode either since the playoffs, as those playoffs took their toll on my
emotions, and I'm certainly not able to rise to the occasion now, this early in the season, and i'm not
even sure if I want to go thru that tense playoff 'final' frenzy again this year, I might need another
year to get into it again.

SO I can see and understand how the team is also struggling to find their consistency and high level of
play, as they would have been much more stressed than any of us were, and we are all just mere humans, and
have to find our quality of playing and watching together.

I am going to watch this team with a medium quality of expectations, and I will enjoy the hockey as a
whole throughout the league without being zoned in on any one team.

While observing other teams, I see that there are a few teams this season who have risen in quality and
are now playing at a high level and will make playoffs, (hopefully for them), as they have not in the
past few years.

edmonton, ottawa, toronto, colorado, and a few others are climbing up the ranks of respectibility and
will give some others a run for their money, where there are others who were expected to be near the top
again who are floundering.

that is the norm for a league very much on par with each other, (thanks to the draft and the cap), and
no team is going to dominate, and any team can beat any team at any meeting.

the end of november is the 1/4 pole for the season, and how everyone is doing begins to take on some
meaning, and if any team is way down in the standings, (outside of injuries to key players), that
will be an indication of their level long term.

OK, this was one of the very good ones. canucks looked good all thru the team. luongo let in one stinker
but it didn't have any impact on the outcome, other than that one, his game was solid, and he made some
very good saves.

the power play was awsome, too bad it didn't work that way in the playoffs finals, they would have the
stanley cup in their barn now if it had.

cody hodgson is playing so good, and getting better all the time.

booth scored his first goal, good to see, he is skating so well, and improving, so is kesler.

a few days rest now in california, then they play san jose

A great team effort and the Canucks made it look relatively easy.

Kudos to the Hawk fans-they stayed right until the end and there were a few jeers when the last minute was announced but only a few.

the fans really gave it to luongo when he let in that stinker, and continued on 'but' only for a little
while, as he and his team put it to the hawks, and never looked back.

The Vancouver Canucks are nearing the end of a six-game road trip during which they've been inconsistent on the offensive end.

After busting out in their most recent victory, the Canucks look to stay hot Thursday night when they face the Los Angeles Kings, who have been dealing with their own struggles to score.

Vancouver (7-7-1) has split the first four games of its trip after going 5 for 6 on the power play in a 6-2 victory Sunday in Chicago.

Combined with a win over Calgary to begin the trip Nov. 1, Vancouver has outscored its opponents 11-3 in victories while being outscored 8-3 in losses to Minnesota and St. Louis.

The Canucks hadn't scored five times with the man advantage since going 5 for 10 in a 6-1 win over Toronto on Jan. 13, 2007. Vancouver, however, has been outscored 10-6 while at even strength on the trip, which ends Friday in Anaheim.

"We haven't been good enough 5-on-5 to win games," said Henrik Sedin, who had a goal and three assists against Chicago. "But if we play good 5-on-5, our special teams will take care of us most games."

Vancouver, which boasts one of the NHL's top power-play units (26.4 percent), is 7-2-1 in its last 10 regular-season meetings with Los Angeles, which snapped an 0-3-2 slide with a 4-3 win over Nashville on Tuesday.

The Kings (7-5-3) had scored two goals or fewer in each game during their skid before beginning their four-game homestand on a positive note.

Mike Richards scored the go-ahead goal followed by Simon Gagne's game-winner in the second period.

"They come to the rink every day and they're in their own little sanctuary," coach Terry Murray said of Richards and Gagne, who are each in their first year with Los Angeles. "They're good teammates and they're learning to be a member of the team. They're also learning the system and style and the culture that we're putting together here."

Richards is scoreless in his last three games against the Canucks, while Gagne has five goals and five assists in nine career meetings with Vancouver.

Backup Jonathan Bernier made 27 saves against Nashville while giving Jonathan Quick a night off. Quick is 3-6-1 lifetime in the regular season against the Canucks, but he has a solid 2.08 goals-against average.

If he starts Thursday, he could be in for a tough night against the Sedins, who share Vancouver's scoring lead with 18 points each.

Daniel has scored a goal in each of his last three games against the Kings, also adding an assist in the Canucks' 3-1 win March 31.

Henrik had his seven-game point streak versus Los Angeles snapped in that matchup, though he'll look to begin a new streak coming off his career high-tying four-point performance against Chicago.

Roberto Luongo made 38 saves Sunday to improve to 3-1-0 with a 2.51 GAA in his last four starts. He's 6-2-1 with a 2.09 GAA in his last nine regular-season starts versus Los Angeles.

The Kings are 3-1-1 in the last five regular-season meetings at Staples Center.
