I thought we were talking about the 76-77 Habs, the players from that team were either drafted or aquired through trade.
Before the draft the big clubs sponsored junior teams and signed players within those teams, of course in those days the Habs had teams within Quebec so a high volume of French Canadian players.....however, the other 5 franchises sposored teams in the same fashion.
The only way to say the Habs had an unfair advantage is to admit French Candian players were better than the rest of North Americ combined.
The rest of north america in those times, 'wasn't much', from alberta to quebec was the elite, and
any players in b.c. who were really good had to leave and go east to be noticed, and b.c. did not
have the minor hockey structure it has today, and was left far behind, the main disadvantage being
'no' outdoor rinks for kids to play 24-7., doesn't matter now, there are so many rinks today, that
kids by the thousands can play or skate all winter, and roller blades seem to be a great advantage
these days for kids to develope skills, and an easy switch over to ice skates.
My husband, at 15 was approached by a scout who was with the new york rangers, he (my husband)played hockey in
new westminster. He was asked if he could try out with their junior team, but he didn't go, it seemed
too big of a deal, immigrant parents who didn't even want him to play at all, and he had no support
system, so he said no, he didn't even tell his parents, they would have just started hollering.
But that was few and far between, to have any eastern hockey scouts snooping around in b.c., but seemed
they did it once in a while, that would have been about l952/53.
It is fair for 'all' today, and a kid only needs the support from his/her parents to get going, and
begin his hockey development, and who knows where he/she will end up, doesn't really matter as long as
they are having fun and participating, even California has a very good minor hockey program.
It's sure different here now.
And, yes the french canadian players were definitely part of the elite, because there was so much connection to
the habs, and the habs were 'so' elite and respected all over canada, and I can imagine how the french
canadian kids flocked out to try to make it onto the big team, just natural in those times.
