What a crazy game, everything happened, but the outcome was good for canucks.
took 13 rounds in the shoot out to get it done, but ohlund finally put it away, so
canucks got their four points for that trip south, now they come home to play detroit
on sunday.

He is really playing well, such a talent with the puck, now I understand how he scored
70 some odd goals in Winnipeg as a rookie, he is dangerous every shift.

Vancouver Canucks - Preview: Detroit @ Vancouver - 11/02/2008
Red Wings-Canucks Preview

Nov 2, 2008, 7:00 PM PT
TV Information

The opening weeks of the season saw the Detroit Red Wings experience plenty of success, but the defending Stanley Cup champions are facing a bit of adversity as they begin November.
The Red Wings hope to avoid a third straight defeat on Sunday as they visit the Vancouver Canucks, who seek to win their third consecutive game.
Detroit (7-2-2) captured the 11th Stanley Cup in franchise history in 2007-08, and extended that success into this season by winning five of its first seven games.
The Red Wings also posted back-to-back shootout wins to kick off their current five-game road trip, but they've faltered since. They followed Wednesday's 5-4 overtime loss at Anaheim with 4-2 defeat in San Jose on Thursday, when they ended their run of nine straight games with at least one point.
Marian Hossa and Brian Rafalski scored for Detroit, which allowed four straight goals to the Sharks and was outshot for the first time this season.
"They really capitalized on their chances, made nice plays and skated well," said center Valtteri Filppula, who assisted on Rafalski's

Krog

Tale of the tape
Current lineup
Injury report

Practice galleryThe Canucks will see one lineup change tonight against the Detroit Red Wings as Jason Krog will slot back in and Jannik Hansen sidelined.

After leaving the game against the Ducks two minutes into the overtime period, Hansen missed the epic shootout and will miss tonight's matchup against the defending Stanley Cup champions.

According to head coach, Alain Vigneault, Hansen is out with an all too familiar (to Canucks fans) groin injury. He is currently listed as day to day and will be re-evaluated in the coming week.

Hansen has three goals and four assists in seven games this year and is the fourth leading scorer amongst rookies in the NHL.

Krog will skate on a wing with Ryan Kesler and Alex Burrows, the team's leading scorers.

Since being recalled October 21 in relief of injuries to Pavol Demitra and Rick Rypien, Krog has dressed in three games, scoring a goal against the Edmonton Oilers on October 25th.

Krog has missed the last two games since seeing ice time in the Canucks' 1-0 loss to the Boston Bruins.

He earned his recall after a short four-game stint in Manitoba, where he scored a goal and added five assists. THe former Calder Cup MVP will try to show the big club what he brought into do and maybe quickly form some chemistry with Burrows and Kesler.

CONFIDENCE DOES WONDERS

For the past two seasons, the Canucks have been criticized for a lack of offense but this year, with some new faces on the bench, the story has changed.

For the Canucks…

One of the most decorated defenceman in Canucks’ history will be playing in his 700th career game tonight as Mattias Ohlund leads the defence into a showdown against the high-powered Red Wings offence. A first round pick by the Canucks, 13th overall, in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, Ohlund has played his entire career in Canuck colours posting 304 points (89-215-304) and 668 penalty minutes in 699 games coming into tonight. His accolades have included an NHL All-Rookie Team selection in 1998 as well as an NHL All-Star game selection in 1999. He has also won the Canucks’ Babe Pratt Trophy for most outstanding defenceman four times – tied for most by a single player along with Jyrki Lumme and Doug Lidster.

The 32-year old native of Pitea, Sweden snapped an eight-game point-less streak on Friday in Anaheim after netting a power play goal in regulation and then playing the role of shootout hero. His two goals on the season are currently tied for tops among Canucks’ defenceman along with Kevin Bieksa. In 35 career games against the Red Wings, Ohlund has 11 points (1-10-11) and 53 penalty minutes.

Injury report

Game highlights
Plays of the week
Canucks this weekWith only 12 healthy forwards heading into Tuesday night's game the Vancouver Sun is reporting that Michel Ouellet has been recalled from the Manitoba Moose and placed on re-entry waivers.

The Canucks acquired Ouellet from the Tampa Bay Lightning with defenceman Shane O'Brien for blueliner Lukas Krajicek and prospect Juraj Simek. The 26 year old forward has led the Moose in scoring with four goals and six assists in 10 games.

Forward Jannik Hansen was the latest Canuck to be sidelined with an injury after sustaining a groin injury on October 31st during the 7-6 shoot out win in Anaheim.

While the team has been plagued early this season with numerous costly injuries, Vigneault reported today that his injured forwards are making positive progress.

Hansen said he is feeling better each day. The young Dane who has tallied seven points in seven games and is the fourth leading scorer among NHL rookies is expected to begin skating in 2-3 days.

Veteran centre Pavol Demitra who was sidelined with a fractured rib in Chicago on October 19th has begun exercising, jogging for the first time since suffering the injury during the 4-2 loss. Vigneault expects Demitra to begin skating on his own in Vancouver within the next few days.

Forward Rick Rypien was sent home during the Canucks six-game road trip prior to the match up in Chicago with a suspected viral infection. After he was cleared by doctors, he began working out on his own, but was evaluated by a specialist for abdominal pains. They found a sports hernia tear and he underwent surgery on October 30th.

PREPARING FOR PREDATORS

The Vancouver Canucks fell 3-2 to the Detroit Red Wings last night in front of a home crowd. The players are quick to admit that their special teams need to be more consistent especially against the defending Stanley Cup champions if they expect to win games.

Head coach Alain Vigneault echoed this sentiment as the team prepares to host the Nashville Predators in Vancouver tomorrow. Without dwelling on the loss the Canucks are eagar to move forward and learn from their mistakes.

The team practiced this morning at GM Place, focusing extensively on their special teams in preparation of tomorrow night's game.

“[The Predators are] well coached, they’re well prepared," said Vigneault. "They play hard, they’ve played really well at home. I think we’re their first game of their road trip, so it’s a good challenge for us, it’s one of those teams that we’re fighting against to get into the play offs so it’s going to be an important game for both groups."

PRACTICING PENALTY KILL

The Canucks came from behind last night to rein the game into a one goal battle, but were ultimately unable to kill off their penalties and captialize on the man advantage.

For the Canucks…

Vancouver’s most offensively consistent player this season looks to add to his ten points (5-5-10) in his last ten games when Mason Raymond takes to the ice tonight against the Phoenix Coyotes. After failing to record a point in the first three games to start the season, the former Camrose Kodiak has gone on a tear recording at least a point in nine of the last ten games. Vancouver’s second round pick, 51st overall, in 2005 will be looking for a career-first tonight as he attempts to record his first ever point against the Phoenix Coyotes.

The Calgary, Alberta-native appeared in all four games of the season series against the Coyotes last year in his rookie season but failed to find the scoresheet. A point tonight for the super sophomore would give Raymond his second five-game point streak of the young season. A goal would also give him the first multi-game goal streak of his young NHL career. Raymond is coming off a one-goal effort against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday evening. For the Coyotes…

One of the biggest names to change addresses during the off-season makes his first visit to GM Place with his new team as Olli Jokinen leads his Phoenix Coyotes into tonight’s showdown with the Canucks. Jokinen, who was acquired from the Coyotes from the Florida Panthers during the NHL Entry Draft in the summer, began his NHL career in the Western Conference with the Los Angeles Kings where he played two seasons from 1997-98 to 1998-99 recording 21 points (9-12-21) in 74 games before being dealt to the New York Islanders.

The former Florida Panthers captain and the Panthers all-time leading scorer has been everything as advertised for the Coyotes so far this season coming into tonight’s game with 11 points (4-7-11) in 10 games. The Kuopio, Finland-native, who was involved in the same trade that sent Roberto Luongo from the Islanders to the Panthers, has recorded a point in all-but-two games this season and is riding a three-game point streak (3-1-4). He had one assist against the Canucks last season leading the Panthers to a 4-3 shootout win over the Canucks. In 10 career games against the Canucks, Jokinen has three assists and nine penalty minutes.

Canucks could have won this game about 4 or 5 to zip, but just couldn't score, that's the way
it goes sometimes, but they did hang on to win it 1-0, and roberto got his 4th shutout.

minnesota won, and calgary won, so we keep pace, still only 1 behind them.

Yeah, he was good tonight, he didn't have lots of work till the last period, then he really
turned it on, as, this one could have slipped away if they had popped one in late in the game.

I think if Phoenix had tied it up Vancouver would have lost. That is usually what happens when you give up the tying goal in a 1-0 contest so late in the game(the mental aspect of it all).

Yeah, that definitely gives the team who scored some momentum, and deflates the other
team.
I thought the Sedin's played great tonight, and had no luck at all, they could have had a
couple of goals, but all they got was goal posts, they seem to be playing more physical
lately, and are grinding and fighting hard for position, and going to the net lots now, and
not hanging in the corners cycling too much, seems like their game is in transition and
moving up a notch, (at least I hope so).

Hall of Fame honors Canadiens' centennial
Friday, 11.07.2008 / 6:30 PM / Hall of Fame
By Dan Rosen - NHL.com Staff Writer

TORONTO — Yvan Cournoyer wanted the full experience.

Awaiting the Montreal Canadiens legend at the Hockey Hall of Fame this weekend was an exhibit honoring 100 years of Habs' history. It's an exhibit that takes Cournoyer, who won the Stanley Cup 10 times with the Canadiens, back to his youth.

And what better way to get to the exhibit that represents your youth than to relive an old experience?

"When I left Montreal, I left by train and I'm staying at the (Fairmont) Royal York," Cournoyer said. "This is what I did when I was young — and this week, that's what I did. I was supposed to take a flight, but I canceled just so I could take the train to remember that, hey, I was there in 64-65, in my first year, and we took the train and walked to the Royal York. The memory is still in you. The memories are the power."

For Cournoyer and fellow Montreal legends Larry Robinson, Serge Savard and Frank Mahovlich, Friday's opening of the exhibit honoring the Canadiens' centennial season gave them a chance to reflect on something that was incredibly personal, yet so much bigger than any one of them.

"It's not mine, it's ours," Savard said. "In Montreal, we were built to be a team. If you had a 2-on-1 and the other guy didn't pass the puck, guys were mad. We weren't thinking about our own selves. We were thinking about the team. The team was most important. When I see all this (the artifacts in the exhibit), I am just happy and proud to be part of it."

For the Canucks…

Roberto Luongo and the Vancouver Canucks are hoping to write a sequel and, no, we’re not talking about Forever Faithful 2. Last November, the Canuck netminder re-wrote the Canucks’ record books when he blanked the opposition in three consecutive games and set a new franchise record for longest sequence without allowing a goal at 210:34. Tonight, the Canucks’ captain has a chance to repeat history as he enters the game having not surrendered a goal in his last two consecutive games and a total sequence without a goal given up at 141:08. What Luongo and the Canucks won’t want to have repeated is the way their streak ended last season – at the hands of this same Minnesota Wild team.

Last season, the Montreal-native appeared in seven of the eight games in the season series against the Wild posting a record of 2-4-1 with a 2.87 GAA and a .886 save percentage. In 21 career games played in versus Minnesota, Luongo has a record of 6-11-4 with a 2.94 GAA and a .892 save percentage. He has also blanked the Wild once in his career but that was way back during his rookie season with the Florida Panthers in a 0-0 tie on October 22, 2000.For the Wild…

The Minnesota Wild have utilized a rotating captaincy since their inception into the NHL, but Mikko Koivu is making a strong case for leaving the ‘C’ stitched permanently onto his sweater. The fourth-year centre, who was named the Wild captain for the months of October and November, has led by example so far this season sitting atop the leader board in points with 13 (2-11-13) in 12 games and guiding his team to the top of the Northwest Division standings so far in this young season. The native of Turku, Finland has cooled off recently after a torrid start to the season that saw him post nine points (1-8-9) in the first three games of the season.

The Wild’s former first round choice in 2001, 6th overall, recently joined some exclusive company when he netted 12 assists in the first seven games of the season tying Adam Oates, Jaromir Jagr, Mario Lemieux, and Peter Forsberg and just one assist behind the all-time mark set by Wayne Gretzky during the 1993-94 season with the Los Angeles Kings. He appeared in six games last season against the Canucks, recording four points (2-2-4) and eight penalty minutes but his most lasting memory against the Canucks last season was when he suffered a broken leg after being slashed by Mattias Ohlund in a game last November. In 18 career games against the Canucks, Koivu has 11 points (3-8-11) and 24 penalty minutes.

Larscheid Report

Game highlightsThe Canucks were back on the ice this morning following their 1-0 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes last night. The players are already looking ahead, focusing on their match up against division rivals, the Minnesota Wild tomorrow.

Pavol Demitra who has missed eight games after suffering a fractured rib during the team's six-game road trip in October, skated by himself before the team practiced.

“He’s been skating on his own here, the last four days, so we’re hoping that we can possibly get him into Monday’s practice, I think we’re shooting for right now," said head coach Alain Vigneault.

Young, forward Jannik Hansen was sidelined with a groin injury during the Canucks' exciting 7-6 shoot out win in Anaheim may slot back into the line up this weekend. Hansen played in 11 games, tallying 3 goals and 4 assists before the game against the Ducks.

Alex Burrows was absent from practice this morning, but will play in tomorrow's game.

“He’s had some soreness there on his hip flexor, so he’s just resting today, he’ll be fine tomorrow," said Vigneault.

FINDING THEIR STRIDE

The Canucks started out the season with a disappointing road trip, but have stepped up their game with two consecutive shut out wins over Nashville and Phoenix at home. Captain and star netminder Roberto Luongo is in his zone, the penalty kill has improved drastically, and offence seems to be coming from everywhere.

“Everybody knows Roberto as well as I do, with his work ethic and his willingness to be the best that he can be, sooner or later he was going to find his game," said Vigneault. "Obviously right now his game is good and we need it to continue to be good if we intend to win games. Tomorrow we’re playing against a team that’s in first in our division and we’re looking forward to that game.”

The team built around their solid goaltending and blueline have been generating impressive scoring opportunities and the players continue to work on improving their special teams.

“We’re generating chances so that’s a great thing, even though we pride ourselves on defensive play we’ve been able to generate some scoring chances and we’ve been able to generate some goals more importantly," said Luongo. "So, that’s a good sign and guys are feeling good about what we’ve done so far.”

“With the personnel that we have here, we think our penalty killing should be obviously in the top third of the league," said Vigneault. "And with the personnel that we have we think that our power play should be better than it is right now also. So when you need some improvement you got to spend some time on it. We’ve been spending a lot of time on ice and we’ve been spending a lot of time in the video room on it. I’m confident that with hard work everything falls into place and the same thing will happen there.”
