As the Canucks prepare to host the Edmonton Oilers tomorrow night, head coach Alain Vigneault suggests that the adversity the team has faced early this season will only make them stronger and more determined.

“I like the fact we’re being tested," said Vigneault. "I believe the leadership we have in our room and the dynamics playing out there are going to be real good. When you’re being challenged, it’s going to make all of them better and that’s when you find out something about yourself. What you have inside you and in your heart.”

He believes his team is about to break out as soon as the special teams and slow starts are fixed. Vigneault and his coaching staff have juggled the special teams to find a more productive product. AHL call-up Jason Krog will be playing alongside the Sedins and is looking forward to the opportunity.

"It's an unbelievable opportunity," said Krog. "I've just got to go out there, do whatever I can and work hard to get them [the Sedins] the puck."

The players have been working diligently to correct any shortcomings and are excited to be back playing in front of a home crowd. They expect tomorrows matchup to be an energetic and physical game.

“I think any team we play we expect a physical game, so I expect to run some of their guys and they’ve got a few tougher guys themselves," said Darcy Hordichuk. "I think it will be a good physical game, kind of like Calgary was. Everybody gets into the game and you get that first hit out of the way and the momentum kind of goes your way. I think that’s exactly what we want to do tomorrow, play physical with these guys and hopefully help slow down their key players and get us into the game early.”

Hordichuk is expected to slot back into the line up tomorrow night after he missed last Tuesday's game in Columbus with a sprained knee. Sami Salo who is out with a groin injury skated today and will likely be back in action on Tuesday when the Canucks face the Boston Bruins

For the first time since opening night of the 2005-06 season, all 30 NHL teams will be on the ice on the same day. There will be nearly nine hours of action, beginning shortly after 4 p.m. EDT when the Devils and Flyers face off in Philadelphia and likely ending a bit before 1 a.m. when the Edmonton-Vancouver and Calgary-Phoenix games wrap up. The action will be heaviest between 9 and 10 p.m. — the drop of the puck for the Buffalo-Colorado game in Denver will mean that 12 games are in progress at once. It would have been 13, but the Flyers moved their game up by three hours to avoid a conflict with Game 3 of the World Series.
Some highlights of the biggest day of the season:
The Calgary Flames have the longest trip — 1,600 miles from their game Thursday in Nashville to Saturday's game against the Coyotes in Glendale, Ariz. The Devils and Flyers will go about 100 miles from Newark to Philadelphia to complete a home-and-home series.
Sixty of the NHL's 67 game officials will see action.
The oldest player expected to see action is Tampa Bay's Gary

Luongo

Today Canuck Place revealed a new public service campaign ‘Embracing Life one goal at a time…’ once again featuring Canucks Captain and goaltender Roberto Luongo.

“The Vancouver Canucks and the Canucks for Kids Fund are always very supportive of our awareness initiatives and we are excited that Roberto agreed to be part of our campaign again this year,” said Filomena Nalewajek, Chief Executive Officer of Canuck Place. “We are thrilled with the success of last year’s ad and so grateful to him for his ongoing involvement with us.”

This year Luongo and 11-year-old Jaxson Creasy of Victoria are joined by 9-year-old Quinn Lesiuk of Kelowna to play street hockey in the playground at Canuck Place. Quinn, a child on the Canuck Place program and a loyal Canuck’s fan, learns to play goal from her favourite goalie while Jaxson offers some advice to Luongo on getting the ball past Quinn in net.

“What touched me most was their spirit and perseverance,” said Luongo. “Every day Quinn and Jaxson, like all the children on the Canuck Place program, face incredible challenges,” stated Luongo. “With life threatening illnesses these kids truly do embrace life one goal at a time. I’m proud to support Canuck Place and hope I can assist in building awareness for families in need in BC.”

The public service announcement was created and produced by Insight Film Studios. “Canuck Place makes a difference in the lives of children and families across our province,” explained Kirk Shaw, Chief Executive Officer of Insight Film Studios. “Everyone at Insight is proud to lend our knowledge and expertise to help support Canuck Place through this public service campaign.”

“We rely on the generosity of individuals, corporations and organizations to provide our program at no cost to over 350 children with life threatening illnesses and their families throughout British Columbia,” said Nalewajek. “Insight Film Studios and the Vancouver Canucks are longtime partners of ours and we are so grateful for their generosity.”

With Dimitra injured, Krog and Wellwood will have to fill in, that is the way 'of a hockey team'
for everyone.
I see you have been staring into your chrystal ball, I don't have one of those, or I would have
all the answers too.;-)
I'm just glad that we have quality players now in the minors to call up when we have those injuries,
we didn't have that before.
The season is young, Gillis has to give them some time to show what the team is made of, so many
changes means that no one knows what this team will do, at least till xmas, that includes you.
Gillis has about 10 million on hold, probably will have it till sundin makes his decision, and if sundin
goes somewhere else, there could be good players available, (cap problems), and he can try to make a
trade or two, if he has to.

CANUCKS 6 OILERS 3
PREGAME
It’s Super Saturday in the NHL with all 30 teams in action for only the second time ever, and tonight’s game between the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers promises to be gem of the evening.
The Canucks (3-4-0) are back on home ice for just the second time this season as they prepare to host the Oilers (4-2-0); Vancouver started the season at GM Place, but then hit the road for six straight, Edmonton is now the team looking for wins on the road as tonight’s contest finishes off their three-game trip.
Both teams are struggling at the moment with the Canucks having lost three straight and four of five, the Oilers began the year with four consecutive wins before losing their last two.
In wake of the injuries the Canucks are battling right now, Kyle Wellwood and Jason Krog will both dress again tonight for the home side, Wellwood was Vancouver’s lone bright spot four nights ago in Columbus so he’ll be looking for another strong effort tonight. Darcy Hordichuk, who missed one game with a knee injury, is expected to be back tonight for the Canucks.
FIRST PERIOD
20:00 - What’s up everybody, Derek along with you again tonight. GM Place is rockin’ with the Canucks back in town, this place is deafening right now. A few line-up notes for you, Sami Salo, Mike Brown, Lawrence Nycholat and Rick Rypien are out for the Canucks, Ladislav Smid and Fernando Pisani will take a seat for the Oil.
20:00 - The Canucks just unveiled the start of a new tradition called the 7th Canuck. One fan will be named the 7th Canuck each home game in an attempt to make GM Place the toughest place to play in the NHL.
19:23 - That’s not the start Vancouver was hoping for. Kevin Bieksa is headed to the box for tripping just 37 seconds in.
18:04 - Roberto Luongo with his first save of the night. He took a nice scoring chance away from Sam Gagner at the left side of the net, that lit up the fans for an “Oilers suck” chant.
17:35 - Not a fan of the new system Qris? Give it a chance, I think you’ll like it.
17:35 - Erik Cole just took a seat for the Oilers meaning in 10 seconds the Canucks will have their first power play of the game. Time to put that 29th ranked PP to work.
16:35 - 1-0 VANCOUVER - POWER PLAY GOAL - Mason Mason Mason! He took off down the right wing and snapped a heater

This was a great game for canucks, as it was a very important game, they came home from their road trip, a bit
dejected, and landed in the basement of the northwest division, so this game tonight gave them a chance to stay
with the pack, and gain back their confidence.
Mason Raymond, was first star, and jason krog played great, as did wellwood, and hannson, luongo had a solid game,
with the exception of one goal that seemed to go 'through' his glove.

It's good to see the powerplay is starting to work.......Along with the penalty killing. A few more games like this one and the injured members will have to fight to get back into the line up.

I have to admit that when Vancouver coughed up the 3-1 lead I was thinking that they may have folded. However, they came up with 3 unanswered goals to give themselves the victory.

It seems to be the case of two teams going in opposite directions. Vancouver seems to be turning it around, and Edmonton is crashing. They started the year 4-0, but have looked pretty horrible in their last three games.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. A nice problem for a coach. Players like Pyatt, Brown,
Ripien, Hortichuk, will have to start getting nervous, as they might be sent down to manitoba.
Krog, Wellwood, Hanson, have played so well, they should stay. When Dimitra is healthy, he
will play, they can't keep all of them.
I think Krog is the only one of that group who can go back and forth to manitoba without
having to clear waivers, so they will probably lose one or two of those players as they try
to clear them through to the minors.

In this northwest division, it will be close as it was last year, I have to say I am surprised at
colorado and minnesota, didn't think they were going to get off to such a good start.
Nothing is ever 'final', the teams will have ebs and flows, as they are all so competative
one team will not dominate, makes for exciting hockey.

Kane, Housley hail Buffalo as 2011 WJC site
Monday, 10.27.2008 / 6:45 PM / News
By John McGourty - NHL.com Staff Writer

"Buffalo is a hockey city and look how well the Sabres have done the last 5 years. It's going to a great opportunity for people there to go out and see the future stars of the NHL. It's going to be rooting for the 'home team,' the Americans."
-- Patrick Kane

The announcement that Buffalo has been chosen as the site of the 2011 International Ice Hockey Federation World Under-20 Championship (commonly referred to as the World Juniors) was hailed by two players who figure prominently in the city's hockey history.

Patrick Kane grew up in Buffalo, where he started to learn the skills that made him the first pick of the 2007 Entry Draft. The Chicago Blackhawks' second-year center is the reigning Calder Memorial Trophy winner as the 2008 NHL rookie of the year.

Schenn to remain with Leafs

"I said if he was one of the top four defencemen on our team he would play. He’s easily in the top four."
-- Toronto coach Ron Wilson

Luke Schenn is staying with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Best get used to the idea. It'll be this way for a long time.

Leafs head coach Ron Wilson Monday confirmed the 18-year-old Schenn would not be returning to the Kelowna Rockets.

"I said if he was one of the top four defencemen on our team he would play," Wilson said. "He’s easily in the top four."

A junior-aged player can play nine games in the NHL before his contract kicks in. Schenn’s ninth game will be Tuesday as the Leafs host the Tampa Bay Lighting.

As Wilson is fond of saying, this is not brain surgery.

Fighting for postiion
Tripped UpThe Vancouver Canucks are dealt some more injury news Monday morning. Rick Rypien will be out indefinitely and needs to undergo abdominal surgery.

Rypien was sidelined with a viral infection last week, that sent home early from the Canucks road trip, and was set to return in the next couple of games. He was cleared by the doctors and was skating prior to the team practices and working out on his own for the past week.

"He came back [from the road trip] and wasn’t feeling well," said head coach Alain Vigneault. "Was tested, nothing came up so he started to work out on his own and started to skate on his own and felt a little twinge in his ab so he went this morning to get evaluated by a specialist. We found a sports hernia tear on the left side so he’ll get operated on in the next couple of days and he’ll be out indefinitely. "

Rypien has battled an injury-plagued career and was on track for a healthy season, when he started off the year with goals in consecutive games. While not known as a goal-scorer, his energy and grit that he brought to the lineup was a welcomed asset that everyone in the organization looked forward to this season.

"I think every person in our organization thinks a lot of this young man because of the way he plays and competes," said Vigneault. "That being said, he's been injured more times than we'd like to and I'm sure than he’d like to so it’s a concern. We feel sorry for what's going on right now."

"If he changed the way he plays, then he's not going to be an NHL player."

ON THE MEND

It wasn't all bad news coming out of practice Monday morning, though, as Sami Salo skated with the team in his second full practice since sustaining a groin injury in Chicago.

Salo is positive about his progression this week and is optimistic about making his return Tuesday when the Boston Bruins come to town.

"I feel good so it's up to the coaching staff and the training staff and see what they think because we have to play three games in four nights so we don't want to rush back in just to play one game," said Salo.

"We're waiting on how the body feels after a couple of good skates. Today was the first real practice, yesterday wasn’t as hard as today but I felt good out there. I'm hoping that everything

Forever a Canuck
Fighting for postiion
Tripped UpThe Vancouver Canucks held an optional skate this morning as the team prepares to face off against the Boston Bruins tonight. The teams haven’t met since December 2006 when the Canucks fell 2-0 to the Bruins in Boston. The Bruins have not won a game at GM Place in over six years.

Former Vancouver Giant and Memorial Cup Champion Milan Lucic makes his first visit to General Motors Place as a pro tonight when his team pays a rare visit to Vancouver. The Vancouver-native, was the captain of Team Canada at the Super Series the last time he played on GM Place ice.

Goaltenders Roberto Luongo and Curtis Sanford both dressed for this morning's optional practice and were joined on the ice by defencemen Kevin Bieksa, Rob Davison, Sami Salo, Willie Mitchell, Alex Edler, and Lawrence Nycholat and forwards Ryan Johnson, Mike Brown, Darcy Hordichuk, and Jason Krog.

Salo who was sidelined with a groin injury in Chicago will be back in the lineup, replacing Rob Davison on the blueline. The Canucks are still missing Rick Rypien who requires surgery for a sports hernia injury and Pavol Demitra who is out with a broken rib. Kyle Wellwood and Jason Krog who were recalled from the Manitoba Moose will remain on the roster.

Luongo worked on facing angled shots and controlling rebounds with Nycholat, Brown, and Krog, while the rest of the group skated in the other end of the rink with assistant coach Darryl Williams, who is responsible for video, running passing and shooting drills.

The Canucks face off against the Bruins tonight in Vancouver, playing only their third regular season game at home this year after departing on a 12 day road trip following the season opener.

“We’ve played two pretty good games here and we’ve got a little bit more jump here for obvious reasons, the fans get behind us and we kind of feed off of that,” said Bieksa.

Vancouver Canucks - Preview: Boston @ Vancouver - 10/28/2008

Bruins-Canucks Preview

Oct 28, 2008, 7:00 PM PT
TV Information National TV:
TSN (HD)Local Away:
NESN (HD) Whatever problems have ailed the Vancouver Canucks this season, they've gone away in front of their home crowd.
The Canucks will look to continue their early offensive outburst at General Motors Place on Tuesday when they play the Boston Bruins, who are coming off a pair of victories they've captured in the closing minutes.
Vancouver struggled offensively toward the end of its six-game road trip last week, scoring six total goals while dropping the final three games of the 2-4 trip. Their special teams were also ineffective on the road, as they went 2-for-24 on the power play and killed just 21 of 30 penalties.
None of that was an issue on Saturday, when the Canucks (4-4-0) were 4-for-6 with the man advantage while killing all four Edmonton power plays in their 6-3 victory at home. Jannik Hansen and Mason Raymond each scored a pair of goals for Vancouver, with Kyle Wellwood posting the game-winner early in the third period.
"We need this type of game every night. We did a good job and we responded, now we have to put it behind us and get ready for the next one," goalie Roberto Luongo told the Canucks' official Web site. "Just because we won tonight doesn't mean were going to win Tuesday. We've got to make sure we're ready to play and compete like we did tonight."
That was only Vancouver's second home game, but their first one went even better. The Canucks beat Calgary 6-0 in their season opener on Oct. 9, and they're one of just two remaining NHL teams without a loss at home.
The Bruins (4-2-3), meanwhile, have played well on the road, going 3-1-2 away from home.
They began a three-game swing through western Canada with a 1-0 overtime victory over the Oilers on Monday night, as defenseman Dennis Wideman ended a night of offensive frustration with a power play goal on the Bruins' 36th shot with less than two minutes remaining in the extra session.
Having gone 0-3 in shootouts this season, the Bruins were glad to have avoided another one. They used similar last-minute heroics in their previous game, as Vancouver native Milan Lucic capped off his hat trick with the game-winner with 1:41 left in the third period of a 5-4 win over Atlanta.
The 20-year-old Lucic, who has seven points in nine games for the Bruins, hasn't faced his hometown team, as Boston and Vancouver didn't meet during Lucic's rookie season in 2007-08.
The clubs last faced off on Dec. 21, 2006, a 2-0 Bruins win in Boston, while the Bruins haven't been to Vancouver since Dec. 4, 2005, when the Canucks won 5-2. Their last win in British Columbia was a 6-3 victory on Oct. 16, 2002.

My what a frustrating game last night. First period was OK, second period was bad, third period the canucks did everything but mug the goalie to get that puck in the net, but it just
would'nt, it wouldn't even bounce in off of someone butt, no puck luck at all.

Veneault said before the game that this Boston team would be difficult to play against with the
lead, and he was definitely right. Boston reminded me of past canuck teams, who had a very strong defensive game, and strategy. So, we gave 2 points to a tired boston team, who managed to get that one goal, then sat on it, and clogged up the ice for the rest of the game.
Live and learn I guess.
Luongo had a very strong game, and kept it at one goal, giving his team a chance to tie the
game, but it just wasn't going to happen.
Mason Raymond had quite a few quality scoring chances, no goal, and others played well, but
not all, I thought hanson was fighting the puck all night. Wellwood showed his ability with the
puck, but also his lack of ability at times, by taking too long to make a decision.
Defense played well, as they were checked very close in their own end on many occasions.
Sedins worked hard, but nothing happened, they are struggling, don't know what will happen
there, as that line isn't producing as they should to make this team go.
So, on to Los Angeles tomorrow, then Anaheim on Friday, lets hope things perk up for us then, but we have had no success with l.a. in the last couple of years, that has to change
now, if we want to bounce back.

Bernier still finding his way
October 29 Globe and Mail

"Midway through the second period last night, the Boston Bruins had been caught on a line change and were in danger of surrendering a game-tying goal. A great scoring chance for the Vancouver Canucks was in the offing - perhaps even a 2-on-0. All that it required was a long outlet pass from Willie Mitchell in the defensive zone to right winger Steve Bernier, who was stationed on Boston 's blueline. Sure enough, the long, crowd-thrilling pass was sent - and it bounced over Bernier 's stick. One play, but it was symbolic of Bernier 's season to date. Through nine games with his new NHL team, the Canucks ' main off-season acquisition has been so snake-bitten, you would think he was with Indiana ..."
Bernier does a lot of things well, but Sedins need more
October 29 Vancouver Province

"Is it time to find a new triplet for the Sedins? Steve Bernier does a lot of things well. The right-winger is a big body who gets to the net to set screens and he 's not afraid to throw his weight around. However, he hasn 't shown the type of finish needed at even strength to complement the cycle game of Henrik and Daniel Sedin -- especially when cross-ice passes come out of the corner. Perhaps it 's time to give Kyle Wellwood an even-strength shot at being the finisher for the twins. Jason Krog, who plays the power play with the Sedins, was spotted playing with them at even strength in the third period. So was Taylor Pyatt. Bernier had a chance to score Tuesday, but couldn 't handle a neat ..."
